Ok, so a bit of an update.

I'm going to phone the vet to see if I could maybe talk with him about spaying and ask a few questions tomorrow. Maybe set up a date too. Not sure.

Ok, so I haven't had the girls spayed yet. I know, I'm a bit slow and I feel like I'm dragging my feet a bit with it, but hopefully both will be spayed soon.

I'm just trying to figure out if I should do blood work for Poppy before. I don't mind spending the extra $60, just trying to find the time for multiple trips to Coquitlam is a bit tricky. She is three, so it would be good anyways just to make sure that every thing is working like it should. But there are risks even with the blood work.

What kind of things can show from the blood work?

Have you been following Crystalballl's threads on her bunny? The blood work for her bun showed a possible kidney problem, although since a urinalysis was normal she's okay to go ahead for surgery.

I'm surprised it's $60, that's a lot more than I expected. Is that a full blood panel? For a pre-surgery check, my vet only does liver and kidney tests instead of the full panel of tests. It might be worth asking about that, since there's no real need to do the rest of the tests unless the vet suspects she has a health problem. Can your vet not do it on the same day as the surgery? Or does he have to send the sample elsewhere for testing?

Blood tests are my preference, although lots and lots of 3 year old and older rabbits have been spayed without blood tests and turned out fine. If you're feeling that the extra trip and money might cause a difficulty for you, pm Rabbit Hutch for advice. I know she said she's spayed lots of girls without blood work and with no problems.

I read a bit on Crystallballs thread.

When I first phoned, I talked with the receptionist. I asked how much general pre-spay blood work would be for rabbits, and she said she didn't know about rabbits but that the dog blood work was $60. So I'm guessing the rabbit blood work would be around there? :?. I wanted to phone and speak to the vet, but I haven't done that yet. I'm not sure if they do it same day, another question I need to ask.

I'll see if I can phone on Monday about maybe when the vet has time if he could phone me. These are my first spays, so I really am not sure what to do and what to ask. I guess I'll figure out soon enough! ;)

How much is the spay?

I think Arbutus was $130 for the spay with an extra $40??for the blood work.Something like that.Don't think it wasover $40,maybe less.Probablycloseto that at ER.

Oh ok! Great! Thanks!

Do you know if Arbutus uses lasers? They didn't mention anything when I phoned awhile ago, but the spay price seems pretty close to the Eagle Ridge, so probably?

IMO don't pay extra for laser surgery. My vet says that rabbit skin is so thin that laser surgery does not make a difference in pain or heal time the way it does with cats and dogs.;)

Holly's pre-op Blood work was $60aswell. And the best $60 I ever spent, the urinalysis was only $20. You don't have to make a bunch of trips I don't think. Well my vet did the blood work and if everything came back clear Holly was booked to be spayed 20 mins later. It didn't happen that way unfortunately. But I highly recommend the blood work.

And my spay for Holly is close to $300. VERY expensive. But I love my vet.

Arbutus does not use laser.

I had Wildfire done at just over 2 years there, plus all my fosters there. They have tons of experience. But then again so does Eagle Ridge, I just haven't dealt with them.

I talked with mom to try to figure out a possible date and it could be as early as Friday or Saturday. If that doesn't work, it will be soon. She works over night on Friday, so she never knows for sure when her shift will be finished Saturday morning. So Friday would probably work better, even if I do have to miss a dayof school.

What is the approx. time for a spay? Do you think I would be able to take the girls in and have one done after the other? How longafter the spay would I be able to take them home? That would be the best scenario. Just to minimize the trips out there. I'll also have to see if they do the blood work there.

At Arbutus, you drop the bunny off between 8 and9 AM and pick her up again any time after 4 PM and before they close at7 PM or 8. Arbutus doesn't do spays on weekends, not sure about Eagle Ridge.

Oh ok. I'll ask when I phone tomorrow. So they will probably have to stay for a few hours after the surgery? That would probably be better if I can drop them off in the morning and pick them up in the evening, although probably would be hard being away from them.

Thanks! Will have to see when I phone. Lots of questions, better write a few down so I don't forget to ask anything ;).

Holly goes in on Wednesday. She goes in at 8:30 in the morning and I'll pick her up at 4:30ish.They like for them to stay most of the day to observe them.Well my vet's anyways. I'm sure they all stay for a while after the surgery

Another good word of advice is to try and make your appt midweek if you can. That way you dont end up with a spay on Friday and problems on Sat or Sun with them not open..
