I just spent the last 3 hours in the emergency room for my little rattie, Bobby. I came home tonight from picking up his new cage and noticed that he was nursing his right paw. Had to call a couple emergency places before finding one that would take a rat. And it's only 4 miles away so bonus (even though it's VCA). Good news is that no fractures or breaks! Bad news is that his tissue around his wrist is all swollen. There was no rat specialist there but she did give me a cd with the x-rays so I could take it to the vet first thing in the morning. She gave him a shot of painkillers so he's not squeaking from pain anymore. I got handed some antibiotics and painkillers to take home and give for 5 days. Now I gotta wake up early and call around to see if anyone can squeeze us in asap. Errik has work at 10 so everything has to be done at 9:30 at the latest. Oh and I found out that he's so small because he's only 6-8 months old, not because he's the runt. My little baby. I love all the ratties but he's my favorite. Now me gonna try to get some sleep.

Picture of Bobby that got me to adopt him to begin with :

Aww poor little baby! I'm glad he's not feeling pain now, good luck with the vet in the morning! None of my ratties has ever squeaked in pain before but I can imagine how heart breaking it would be.

Aww...poor little Bobby...I'll be praying for him...keep us updated, ok?

I'm going to add a hotlink for this thread in your RO Today mention, ok? :)

You just got an R-695, correct? Are the wire floors covered with fleece or another material? If not, it could possibly be that he got his little rattie food stuck in the wire floor, "sprained" it, and that caused swelling and damage.

He also could have been wrestling with his buddies. I have also heard about rats getting swollen feet due to food allergies.

OR....he could have jumped from a level the wrong way.

Our little rattie friends can hurt themselves in odd ways. I hope he feels better soon.

EDIT TO ADD: I just reread and it said you were coming back from picking up the cage. You did have them free ranging for a week or so before the cage, right? It very well could be that he jumped from a high place, or fell, or got pushed off by one of his friends.

It's most likely the cause for the foot damage and why rat proofing is extremely important to make sure you have proofed everything. It happens, though. I've had rats that have climed all the way to the top of my computer desk and couldn't get back down. Luckily, I was in the room the whole time and was able to "rescue" them, lol.

Be sure to cover the wire floors in the R-695 anyway and add tons of hammocks to cusion falls, to prevent hurt ratties :p.

Well Amy, I could take pictures but our room doesn't have a high place. My bed is just matteress and box spring, my computer table is an end stand low enough where my bed is my chair and nothing really is higher than eye level while sitting on my bed. And everything is right next to each other so the animals could take steps up and down everything. And honestly, I've had him seperated from his brothers this past week because he kept getting picked on. I know how everyone stresses that ratties need company, but he seemed so much happier alone than with his brothers.

But thanks for the advice and who knows, I wasn't here, he could've fallen off something but I know for a fact he wasn't pushed :)

And thanks everyone else for all your prayers. I called this morning and no one could take him in today until I called one down the street (that I didn't even know about). The doctor was scheduled to be in surgery all day today but when I explained my situation he agreed to squeeze me in at 3:45....so I went back to bed cause I did not sleep at all last night.

I would never do that but it can happen.

You guys I'm starting to freak out now. His entire right side of his body is swelling up, he can't open his right eye anymore. 2 more hours Bobby :( I gave him more Baytril and Buprenex. He can't eat solid food cause he can't pick them up. I'm having to syringe him applesauce and other baby foods.

Bad news is that I just found out Errik still has all the paperwork from last night in his jacket pocket. So the doctors will have to repeat everything and waste time. Good news is that Errik is going to leave early from work to bring them to me and take us to the vet. We'll just go the minute he gets here. It'll be faster us to wait for him rather than wait for the doctors to do everything again.

From my heart...

I hope Bobby is going to be okay. I know Goosemoose forums is sometimes snotty and rude, but please seek advice from them if you haven't already. They have dealt with every type of rat illness and injury....they can guide you...especially since it can be VERY hard to find a rat vet that knows exactly what they are talking about.

It seems it wasn't a fall, but something else is going on with Bobby....I wish I had time to do some research, but I need to head out because Ryan plays a show tonight and we are putting the demo cds together. One thing that comes to mind, it could be a neurological thing. Rats hide their illness and injuries for as long as they possibly can...until the pain is so hurtful...that they have to let you know...and when that happens, we must act fast because rats can go downhill so fast.

My heart rat had a brain tumor or neurological damage...she was fine, then I went back to her a half hour later and she was spinning in circles, "wagging" her tail, head tilt, ect......I lost her all within a few hours :?.

I don't have time to PM, since my computer is taking like 5 minutes to load up a page, so I'll leave my cell number here. I don't care who sees it...I like prank calls :p:

<snip>

Call me if you do need some support for Bobby or advice on getting medication into him, ect. Please, please, please, please, please....do not hesitate to seek advice on Goosemoose though. Like I said, they can be crazy hot heads, but they know what they are talking about.

I wish the best of luck to you and Bobby. Rat illness and injuries are so tough. I'll be thinking about you guys. If you don't call, then could you please email me when you know what is going on with him...so that I can check my email from my cell phone? I can't check RO through my phone. [email protected]

EDIT: Jade I will pm it to her.
