Hello!

I'm new to owning a lop bunny and I have come across videos in the past saying how they should be cared more than other breeds of rabbits bec of their ears. I'm not sure. She is only like 5-6 months. I have really found this online chat to be really interesting and helpful so I was wondering if anyone can help me and give me tips on how you care for yours? I'd be ready thankful if you could💗

They can sometimes be more prone to certain health issues than uppie eared buns, like ear infections. And Holland lops can be more prone to possible respiratory or dental issues because of their flatter faced head shape.

This is just generally. Not all lop eared buns will have these issues. I've had lop rabbits that never had ear, dental, or respiratory problems. I did do regular checks on my rabbits ears and also monitored for signs of other health issues.

So it's just something to be aware of and to keep a close eye on, but also have the financial ability to cover health costs if these problems do come up. Regular check ups (biannually, or at least yearly) with a knowledgeable rabbit vet is one way to help keep a watch for these things. Also understanding what the signs are of developing health issues, like a rabbit not eating or changes in appetite, changes in their poop, unusual changes in behavior, or unhealthy weight loss.

Also feeding the right diet and having a good environment, may help minimize the possibility of some of these things occurring. So a diet where the rabbit eats lots of good quality grass hay can help with dental issues. Orchard grass in particular, may be one of the better hays for this.

Also, keeping a clean living environment may help minimize the chances of respiratory issues. So reducing dust in the rabbits hay, litter, and environment. Not using harmful or strong cleaning chemicals, or strong scented irritants around your rabbit, particularly where your rabbit could have any direct contact with it. Not letting urine odor build up (ammonia build up irritates the respiratory system).
