I think the shelter bit is a cheap salestactic.I have also heard if not sold they will go to an auction.franklyi have never had trouble selling baby holland lops.and i live in themiddle of nowhere.bluebird

I find that most breeders like that tend to bepet mills - especially with the "I'm going to take him to a shelter"type tactic. The legitimate breeders I know will often be willing tohold a rabbit for a few days for you to make arrangements.

I know you have fallen in love with the rabbit's picture ~ and Iunderstand that ~ I really do. As a breeder, I have oftenbought my new stock from pictures and emails with the owners/breeders.

But I'm really concerned about you and about this rabbit. I'd like toask you to think this through VERY carefully ok? Let me share myreasons why.

a. If this is a breeder mill ~ the rabbit has a very goodchance of not being in good health. Or it could wind up with healthissues somewhere down the line. Many times rabbits are bred and bredand bred so much...that there are "hidden" problems that can crop up intheir offspring. I don't know how many times we've heard of someonehere (usually a newer member) losing a rabbit that they bought eitherfrom a pet store or a breeder who was really more of a "breeder mill".It's a heartbreaking thing to have happen.

b. The fact that this person spoke of taking the rabbit tothe shelter (probably to convince you to cough up the money for therabbit) speaks of their ethics...or lack thereof. Are you sure you canreally trust a possibly dishonest person to sell you the rabbit theysay you are getting.

c You are not getting to meet the rabbit ahead of time toknow their personality or even to see if they're healthy. What ifsomeone from this forum drives all the way there and finds a rabbitthat has discharge running from its nose and eyes that look like itssick... Do they pick up the rabbit anyway? Do they back downand then say "no" and risk hurting you?

I'm sorry - I'm simply trying to share my concern for you. It is very hard to get a rabbit and get attached and then lose it.

I would encourage you to do one of two things.

a. Find a reputable breeder for the breed you want (we canhelp you look for a club site for that breed and good breeders usuallywill be listed as members of the club)

or

b. Help you find a shelter where you can go and pet the rabbits and get to know them and then pick one.

I understand what it is like to fall in love with a rabbit. I truly do. I know what it is like to fall in love with the picture.

But IF you get this rabbit and it is from a breeder mill - even if itis not ill - there is a very good chance it will not be socialized andyou'll have a cute bunny that just runs around the floor but never letsyou hold it.

I've bought 3 rabbits (well - 4 really) from a breeder mill before. Thefirst three were before I knew better - the fourth was a lionhead fromsomeone I thought was a good breeder. They have never ever been asfriendly or the pets that my others have been.

I only want to see you have a rabbit that you enjoy and love. Onerabbit (the chocolate) is being offered to you at too young of an age.Another one (this one) - I have some serious questions about - and I AMa breeder....so I know a bit of what to look for.

[align=center]Well isthere of any good breeder sites you know a couple of hours or so fromme? We could still do a train/ deliver type thing, but this way I canknow that it is coming from a good breeder, but hopefully people wouldstill help get the bunny to me.

I have to agree with Haley on this. This person sounds very shady. Definitely do not send anymoney in advance. Have you checked to see if this person is amember of the ARBA? That would give them somecredibility, credentials and possible references. If you can,PM me their name or other info from the add to me and I will check themout to see if they legit (if it's possible to get the info).I highly, highly doubt this is any kind of a legitimatebreeder. I can't imagine anyone with a reputation trying totrick/con someone into buying a bunny by saying the rabbit will go to ashelter otherwise.

Any one does the transport needs to know they are going into aquestionable situation or dangerous situation. My suggestionwould be to meet outside the downtown Mansfield policedepart. Just a thought.

There are a number of rabbit rescues in the Toledo area includingsome foster homes in Fremont for Buckeye House RabbitSociety. You can see their bunnies at Haleywrote:
This person does not sound legit. I dont think anyone would wantto transport if hes a breeder also. If he wants to sell his bunnies heshould be willing to meet you. And if hes a breeder he's not takingthat bunny to a shelter. Hes just trying to lure you in.

Have you checked Petfinder to look at local bunnies in shelters? Ivolunteer at Midwest Rabbit Rescue(http://www.rabbitrr.org) nearDetroit, MI. If you were intestered in any there we might be able towork something out for you. One of the volunteers goes back and forthbetween there and Toledo guite a bit!

Just to show you one we just got: Shes so cute and the adoption fee includes her spay (which is usually 150-200 bucks!)

I'm guessing from your photos you are wanting a holland lop.

Here is a listing of the Holland Lop breeders in Ohio.

Something to consider - if funds are tight - buying from a shelter maybe your very best bet as the bun will already be neutered..

I do not know if they are "good "breeders or not - but they are the first ones I'd be looking at.

BTW, I got this off the Holland Lop club site:

If transportation is an issue, eliminate the breederswho are far away like the one in Cambridge (Guernsey County), Pataskala(Ccoshocton County), etc Those would be round trips of 10-12hours. Unless the breeder is willing to meet or to be at ashow near you. You can always check the ARBA site for showsin your area

I figured since you know Ohio and I don't - you could at least look at a map to see who is close to you and then contact them.

I'm sorry ~ I probably shouldn't have bothered going and looking up that information.

Good luck on getting a bunny...we have several other capable memberswho can help you out and I see you're getting good suggestions.

NO NO NO...I THANK YOU very muh for trying to help. If Ifind a breeder not too far away, I guess I could start a new thread tosee if someone can help with transportation. :D

Yeah, I wouldn't get involvedwithsomeone like him. It sounds like he's just in it for themoney. What respectable breeder would threaten to take it to a shelter, but not even be willing to drive 20 minutes for someone driving a longdistance.

Since you've mentioned a bit about cost, I wouldmaybe alongwith the great breeders people have mentioned, maybe check out arescue. The rabbits come already fixed which will save you a bit withfixing costs.

As Haley mentioned in an earlier message, many people will only transport if it's a rescue situation.

I'm secretary of the Ohio Holland Lop club andwe have a member & website listing on our club websitehttp://www.geocities.com/ohlrf/

Gas is expensive, so many breeders are not willing to go through muchtrouble or travel for a sale if they can make an easier saleelsewhere. Personally, I won't deliver rabbits or meet anyonehalf-way - I simply don't have the time to make deliveries.

Breeders also may feel that if someone can't come and get the rabbit, that they probably don't have the resources to properly care for arabbit.

Pam

While we love to help bunnies and their ownersget to one another, we do not do transports for breeders. This isclearly not a rescue situation and I would not trust this breeder onebit.

Can you check out Toledo Humane Society? We take bunnies from them allthe time that are scheduled to be put down. Im not sure if they haveany at the moment (we just took 4 from them) but it seems like they arealways full of bunnies. Many get put to sleep. If youre reallyinterested in rescuing a bunny I would check them out.

I'm not sure this is coming across right - so maybe I can say it this way.

Most transport situations will NOT transport for a breeder -particularly for one as unethical as this person seems to be. Thetransportation links we have - are for true RESCUE situations only -for a rabbit that is homeless or in a shelter. Even though this personhas said the rabbit might go to a shelter - that does not make it a"rescue" situation. You are looking at buying from a breeder - anunethical one. Therefore - most groups (and most individuals I know of)will not help.

I would suggest you consider some of the other options that were givenfor breeders and shelters close to you or find your own transportationto get this rabbit. But please don't call it a rescue - because it isNOT one.

Pam,

I've never thought of that - but it is true. We are travelling to SanAntonio soon to deliver two rabbits - BUT - the people wanting them arefrom Houston and there is no club member in that area breedinglionheads. Since we enjoy going to San Antonio - we're willing to makethe trip but we're charging them some extra for the gas (and theyagreed to it to save themselves the drive).

Normally though - I do not deliver to people unless I am going in that direction.
