1986 was the year I was a Senior in high school, and also my 1st job. I made Trip-tiks at AAA. Nowadays, most people on RO probably don't even know what a Trip-tik is, but it was a book map of sorts, that was highlighted by hand, showing a person how to get to a destination. GPS systems in cars and internet mapping has virtually replaced the old-fashioned Trip-tik. I made $3.35 an hour.

Tell me about your first job! :)

Mine was a paper round. Nice and simple but I sucked at it.

So you delivered newspapers on a route?

Why did you suck at it?

When I was a kid, our papers sometimes ended up on our roof, because the carrier had bad aim, but was also on a bike. :p

My first job was being what was called a 'ward secretary " in a hospital ata Nurses station . I answered phones, and took orders off charts and did paperwork. This was before computers so I didn't make a lot of mistakes LOL It was the first summer after graduation from high school; I have no idea how muchI made at all ...too long ago

My first job was working as a cashier for Boots Pharmacy I like my job but hated the people I worked for who even though they are a pharmacy weren't very sympathetic about my migranes!

Yeh, I delivered them around a portion of our village. They all had to go through letter boxes, they had to have the right combination of papers and they had to go through the right doors.

I sucked because my speed did not correlate with my checking skills, although the more I did it the better I got because I could remember the whole route, what paper/s went to which road number, etc (which was fine until someone was away on holiday and then I became unstuck).

I was only about 14, and I got paid roughly £3.20 for my Sunday round, which took about an hour and a half.

My other jobs were more satisfactory but the only one I ever excelled at was teaching.

I Didn't know that you were a teacher ,Tracy, but now thatI think of it you would be excellent at doing that; it shows on the forum....
Thanks :)

I used to teach dance at a stage school which I absolutely loved.

I also did four years teacher training, but had to leave the course with only 6 weeks left because my mental health imploded. I never got my proper QTS (qualified teacher status) to teach in a primary school and that guts me because it would have been an awesome job. I miss teaching a great deal.

My first job not working for a family member or close family friend was this summer. (Summer between my 1st and 2nd years of college) I worked as an animal caretaker at an animal hospital and boy did I learn a lot! I also made $10/hr. I was looking for a vet to volunteer with but couldn't find one and instead found this job.

My first job was informal. My grandma had her own business, cleaning new houses for a local construction company, and most of her work was in the summer. She'd clean the houses after the builders were done, but before people saw or bought the houses. Or before they moved in, if it was custom-built. My mom sometimes helped her, so I went along, too,. When I was really young, they'd have me clean the baseboards, usually something like $5 for the whole house, lol. Then as I got older, I got an hourly pay, and did pretty much everything.

I didn't have a proper job until college. When I was in high school, my mom and I lived just outside of town, so there wasn't an option to work. Only the one car, so there was no way I could get to a job and home.

Don't remember what the "first" was, I did lots of different stuff in college. Worked at the public library, worked on campus for the catering department, worked for the entymology department picking bugs out of river muck.

My father in law STILL goes to AAA and gets maps anytime he is going on a trip. He would not trust my gps!

When I was 18, I moved out of my parents house and into an apartment. 2 months later when I ran out of money, I got my first job as a clerk at a little family owned video rental store. I don't remember what my hourly rate was but I made about $75 a week. LOL

Yep, we used to use those all the time :p

My first job was as a box-boy (girl) at Alpha-Beta market - worked my hind end off - plus I had to ride my 10speed bike 5miles to and from.....man, I was in good shape!

My first job was after my first year of college, at a gymnastics club. My job was to set up and clean up after kids birthday parties there, and help supervise and answer questions, etc.
My second job was during my second year of college at one of the dining facilities!

First official job was working in a pub, manning the dishwashers. I hated it. I used to do the Sunday Lunch rush for 3 hours (I was only 13) but then I got sacked because I was really too young and the owner couldn't be bothered to fill out the paperwork for me to be there... I was only there for a few months or so (the lady who was my 'boss' was called Heather and she had one arm and we used to steal roast potatoes and eat the bottom bits of the ice cream vats with wooden spoons!)

Not sure if that counts as a 'real' job though. After that I started working at Clarks where I am now (almost 2 and a half years) and I also worked a season at my local rugby club in their kitchen serving lunches to the presidents and sponsors, and then serving the players their teas (hot rugby players!)

I was a "Professional Dog Bather" at PetSmart when I was 16. I made something like $6.50 per hour.

Thinking back...I shouldn't have been such a little "sheet", or else I could have been a dog groomer by now!!

I believe my first job was working at a gas station as a cashier. I made like 6.25 an hour. That was like 3 years ago, haha.

Much happier that I went to school and do what I do now. :p
