I just switched to Timothy Complete for my bunny Abby, but does that mean I shouldn't give that much Timothy hay? I know if you feed an alfalfa based diet, you shouldn't feed that much alfalfa hay, so is it the sameway?

Im no expert, but I dont think you need to cut back on the hay at all. I feed my guys Timothy Complete and give them unlimited timothy hay all day. I dont think they can get too much.

Just make sure you also include veggies and such to complete their diet.

Best Wishes!

Haley

Yup, unlimited Timothy Hay... as much as they want. More than they want. ;) It just goes right through them -- nature's scrub brush. It's good stuff!

Nope, you don't have to decrease the amount of timothy hay, it's fine. The reason why they say to limit the alfalfa hay if they are being fed alfalfa pellets, is the high amount of protien in both that may cause poopy butt and an over-excessive amount of cecels. Timothy pellets and unlimited timothy hay is just fine.

Just a side note -- the Kaytee Timothy Complete contains Ethoxyquin (a preservative). It's a known carcinogen (cancer causer). Just htought you guys might want to know.

As for limiting Timothy hay, it's not necessary. They say that with Alfalfa because Alfalfa pellets are high in nutrients that adult rabbits dont need as is Alfalfa hay so giving them both can cause problems like sludge in the bladder, etc.

Harper, and my guinea pigs, are on Timothy Complete. I had to drive out of town the other day to get the very last bag of it at a Petco. I went to every Petsmart, and they were out. I finally found a manager who told me that Petsmart (at least the ones here, not sure if it's nationwide) is discontinuing it, and will not be carrying it anymore. Petco also said they didn't know if they would be ordering anymore either.

I ordered a case of it for the guinea pigs and the rabbits from somewhere else, but only because we are moving, and I do not have the money nor the place to store50lb bags of Oxbow.

However, in a few weeks after we move, I am switching Harper and the guinea pigs over the Oxbow's food because of the Ethoxyquin. I read about it on the internet, and what I read scared me. I don't want my animals on that stuff, especially my beloved Harper and Haley. Haley is on L/M's alfalfajunk at the moment, but she will be switched to Oxbow along with the others in a few weeks too.

O wow. Thanks for the heads up guys! I didnt know this about Timothy Complete. I was thinking of switching to Oxbow anyways, so I guess this just gives me even more reason to do so.

Thanks

Haley

Well, not to rain on anyone's parade, but Oxbow contains Menadione, a synthetic Vitamin K additive thatis believedto cause (among other things) "cytotoxicity in liver cells".Many pet food manufacturers are starting to remove it from their products.I feed my rabbits Oxbow, and recently started researching this.

If there's a perfect food out there I haven't found it yet...

I'm thinking more and more that I'm just going to stick to what I'm using. :disgust:The Oxbow is so expensive to get here and my rabbits were doing (mostly) fine on them before. Although I have seen an improvement in Mocha on the Oxbow.

I was actually looking for Oxbow, but Petsmart didn't have it, so I bought the next best thing. There is a feed store about 12 miles from here though that carries Oxbow, I just need to go and get it. Thanks a lot for the heads up.

Ugh, I can't believe even Oxbow has crap in their food. I want my dang rabbits on a GOOD food that doesn't have something in it that could potentially harm them. *Mutters* I should make my own dang food. There is no sense in adding all these chemicals to foods.

That freakin' infuriates me! :angryrant

BTW, I am definitely NOT buying Oxbow now. My rats are on their pellets, but only because one of them has food allergies (go figure) and Oxbow was one that they could eat. Harper, Haley, and the piggies are not going on it. I don't want them on Timothy Complete either, but I need to find another food first.

As M.E.indicated, there doesn't seem to be a perfect food. Almost all vets seem to think Oxbow is the best of the works, though. It certainly seems to have the best ingredients like high fiber, etc.

I agree with you Pipp, it does seem to have some great ingredients. I really don't want to switch them to Oxbow now, but I do not want to keep them on the Timothy Complete either. I think the remaining question is, which chemical is worse and will do more harm? :?That's a sad question to even have to ask about feeding your animal, and I think all these added chemicals is just ridiculous.

i made my own rat food for seven years! surely there is a way to make our own rabbit food, but i know that would be lots harder. i am using timothy complete. and thats the only timothy pellet i can find unless its oxbow, and i dont have a job now, i wont be working till september and we all know oxbow is pricey and the shipping too! and now it has something bad for the buns in it! i guess i will just stick with kaytee timothy complete

Hi, I was just reading thru the posts and saw the one about Timothy Complete.

We use "Natural" Timothy Hay. Is this the same? I looked at the ingredents and it only mentioned "Natural sun-cured timothy hay".

Thanks

Sooska,

were you looking at the package for timothy hay or pellets? We were referring to the Timothy Complete Rabbit Pellets, which contain the bad ingrediant, not the Hay.
