I doubt she would be pregnant, unless there is another male out there with her or she was bred before she got released/escaped.

Cottontails and hares cannot successfully breed with domestics. Here is a little bit from a website I found that explains it..

"

Myth: Domestic rabbits can interbreed with hares and cottontails.

The facts: Hares (Lepus) have 24 pairs of chromosomes while the domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus) has 22 and the cottontail (Sylvilagus) has 21 pair. While mating is possible between the different species, the resulting embryos will die after a few cell divisions because of the differences in the number of chromosome pairs. "

Thank you Spring. I hope she is not pregnant. She is just showing the characteristics that my old female would do when she was pregant. Im proably overreacting. Anyway she is doing wonderful. Stinky seems to like her a lot. He wont stop humping his toys whenever she stops by his cage.

It is possible she is pregnant, but aloso entirely possible that she is having a 'phantom pregnancy'.

If it is a phantom, then that could be through coming across another bunny in the wold, or even through seeing Stinky about.

When my doe was pregnant none of the men showed any interest in her, or appeared turned on by her, as it appears Stinky is with this one, so maybe it's phantom. I hope for your sake it is.

She could be pregnant for all we know there was a male with her.

Hi,

First and foremost, thank you for caring about this rabbit. No doubt you have saved her life. For those of us in rescue, we know it's about time for the Easter bunnies to start being "set free". I have already had two calls in the past couple of days. At least I know that the people that did these terrible acts to these bunnies will have to answer for it....when it really counts. And I also think there will be rewards to those, like you, that helped an animal in need.

We have a male that could be her twin. A breeder was letting him starve due to maloccluded incisors. Another breeder intervened and saved this rabbit and he is with us. And he is such a clown....a wonderful young man.

And technically, there can be conception between cottontails and domestics. However, in lab tests the embryo died after the fourth cell division. So, based on scientific testing...it is not possible. But....some friends of ours had some New Zealands that accidentally escaped into the woods. And there were some very oddly colored cottontails for a couple of years. And just this year, we had a rabbit come into rescue (very sick) that appeared by the pictures to be a domestic rabbit....looked like a blue harlequin...but when she transferred in, she was a cottontail. While I usually agree with scientific research, in this case, the jury is still out as far as I am concerned.

Again, I think we all are grateful to you for helping Lucky.....she really lives up to her name.

Randy

Thanks for the replies and kind words everyone. She has come around a lot in the last couple of days. She is a very nice bunny. Still no word from the owners. She is loving it here though. Here is a recent picture. She just chillin.

Awww such a poor sweetheart. I am glad you found her. Do you think she is preggy? Maybe the owner figured that too and that's the reason they let her go? Sorry, if I expect the worse from people, but I saw and heard so many things when I worked at the pet shop. :?It's so sad. At least this story has a happy ending and she is in a loving home now.
