Hi guys,

Penny is sick again.

Penny had a number of teeth extracted 6 months back due to a nastyabscess and has been living on antibiotics shots and no hay sincethen.

Every now and then her teeth get too long, because they don’t grind down naturally anymore and we have to get them cut.

This time she stopped eating little by little (just like every timewhen her teeth get too big), so we took her in. Vet trimmedher teeth, but she hasn't started eating like she always did after hertrims.

Took her in again the next day, he thought she developed stasis due tostress/not eating. Gave her a fluid shot , pain med shot, and cisapridedeal (to move stuff).
Nearly two days since the first visit, Penny is still not eating herpellets, nor drinking much, sitting in the corner and grinding herteeth. (The bad grind). She doesn't feelgassy.

I'm totally lost. She did eat a little bit of celery from hand and piece of apple.
If anybody have an idea plz let me know, any suggestions would be great. Her vet is in tomorrow.

Do you have any critical care or can you grindup her pellets and make a slurry? I would at least get her eatingsomething so her gut is moving.

Was the vet sure the abscesses havent come back? Did he feel around thejaw line and such? That would be my first guess if shes still noteating properly and grinding her teeth.

Do you have any pain meds on hand? Poor Penny :(

Forgot to tell....we have been force feeding since this morning. (critical care)

I'm not sure if the vet felt for an absess, but last time I'm the onewho noticed it and I've check her multiple times and will check againasap. Our next step is xrays or at as you say at least havethe vet feel her. God, this is going to be the 3rd visit in 4days. She has been so stressed out at the vets resently, likenever before.

And yes we gave her torbutrol(pain) in the morning, and doc gave her a shot last night of some pain med.

Thanks forhelping out again.

oh geeze, Im so sorry she (and you) have to gothrough all this. I wonder if maybe it just could be stasis brought onby stress or something?

Sounds like youre doing everything I can think of (pain meds, forcefeeding). I really hope its nothing serious. You guys have been throughso much.

Maybe someone else will have some ideas. Usually when I hear not eatingand grinding teeth I think tooth problems..but it could be a lot ofthings I imagine :(

Have you felt her belly to see if it feels hard?

Thx Haley, my family is taking care of her rightnow, as soon as I get home, I'll be able to tell.So far they tell me, her belly is fine.

That's why I'm so lost. All signs point to her tummy, evenvet says so, but she is pooping a little and her stomach doesn't feelthat bad.

She is such a fighter.

hi Haley, thx for asking,

She is pooping but bad, and not eating much just very very few pelletsand snacks (apple). So we are still force feeding criticalcare. I dont want to jinx, but I think she is getting betterslowly. She was still crunching her teeth yesterday and inthe morning, but that comes and goes.

Oh little Penny.

How is max' breathing doing? Also did I read right somewhere that one of your buns (basil?) absess came back???

Poor little Penny.

Our babies sure have been through a lot. Max's abscess is back in hisjaw, I believe. I was trying to hold off surgery on that until I gothis breathing better, which I dont think is going to happen. So hesgoing in next Friday to see the vet dentist who originally removed theabscessed tooth. Im praying he can actually perform the surgery withMax's breathing being so bad.

I'll be keeping little Penny in my thoughts and prayers. We need a break from these vet bills darn it!

(((Hugs))) for you and Penny...

Because I'm not knowledgeable on the subject, afraid there's not much Icould offer here; about the only thing that crossed my mind when I readyour thread was the possibility of perhaps a tooth developing ahairline crack in it after trimming - which could result in aninfection at the root...but (I think?) that's only a real risk if thevet used nail trimmers rather than a dental drill.

So I just wanted to add my prayers that Penny is feeling better very soon.

And hugs to Max too...poor little guy...!

Thx guys,

Haley I'll pray for little Max. I hope it all goeswell. Maybe keep Max on bicillin, like our Penny so theabsess doesn't come back. Its about $35 a month for the meds, but beats the heck out of paying for surgery.

Bassetluv, thank you for the info. Our vet said the samething, that the clippers can crack teeth. He uses thetrimmer. In fact he let me watch when they trimmed herteeth. Thanks again for the tought.

She is still not eating, we are forsing her to eat. We founda better way to stuff her with critical care today. We used to do the surange method, which was great, but we saw how thedoctor opens her mouth (by putting the thumb on one side of the jaw andthe index finger on the other). That gives enough opening toput in a spoon worth of critical care. It's faster, plus we give her plenty food.

Max just started Pen G injections this week. Myvet said he wants to only do one shot a week though, I thought youcould do more..are you guys doing every other day??

For critical care, this is a stupid question, but have you tried to seeif she will eat it off a spoon? I was syringing Max some this week (heslost a pound!) and he was taking it fine, but then I noticed he wouldtake it off my finger..and off a spoon. Its soo much easier that way.

Haley,

I dont know if Pen G is Bicillin for sure (I googled and got the samething, so it must be the same). Anyways, after the surgery wehave Penny a shot every day, then after about 3 weeks, we started everyother day.

Penny sometimes takes critical care from hand but this time she didn't.

She started eating little bit more. Definatly more than before, and her poop looks normal.

She is still not eating, and pooping verylittle. She eats about 10-20 Timothy pellet every night, thenstops. Then she poops about 10-20 pellets a day.

We have to feed her still. I'm going to talk to the doctor. Maybe another tooth is lose.

Thanks lucylocket,

We juiced carrots for her, sometimes she likes it sometimes she doesn't. She is drinking pretty good.

Last night she was running around, pooping pretty dang good, reallynice big one's and started eating her pellets like crazy, even ate herparsely. Then I wake up, and see that she hasn'ttouched her food since. Man, I'm so confused. I'llbe talking to the vet today. Seems like its her teethagain.

Yes, she is on pain meds now. She wasoff for a few days, and the results were thesame.Poops a little in the morning (but doesn'teat, we feed her), Then a good amount of poopin theevening. Starts eating on her own in the evening, then poopsa little more at night, but doesn't touch her food at night or nextday, till next evening.

When do you give the pain meds, in relation towhen she is and is not pooping? It's possible they'reupsetting her stomach. I think there are meds that can begiven for that (was it Prilosec?), or you could switch to a differenttype of pain med. I think Eve was given Tramadol for her bunand it worked well. It's an opiate, not an aspirin-type druglike metacam, so it's less likely to upset the stomach.
