I think it depends upon the breed of small rabbit and the personality of that particular rabbit.

I have a Flemish Giant named Tiny - and yes, he's huge. He rarely bites me.

I have two Netherland Dwarfs (Kyo & Tio) and theywere a real handful when I got them two months ago - and until thisweek, I swore I'd never get another Netherland Dwarf.Ha. I may try to find a FEMALE companion I canneuter for Tio....but in the last 10 days or so, my boys have settleddown (their neuter was a little over 3 weeks ago).

I also have 2 lionheads and plan to breed lionheads in thefuture. They are very docile and I tend to think they'readorable. I love watching them play....

My final bunny is a Holland Lop - another small rabbit like the dwarfsand lionheads. I've got to say - if I was recommending a"first" bunny for someone - and it was going to be small -I'd recommend a lop...hands down....no contest. This little guy drives me up the wall with his antics (getting out ofour yard twice within 24 hours - even with me IN the yard watching him- and attacking the vacuum cleaner while my husband was usingit). Yet, he is the most loving of all the bunnieswe have....we get TONS of bunny kisses from him (as my husband pointedout yesterday - so did the trash can in the bunny room when he was outplaying)....and while he does nip once in a while (if hewants to get down) - he doesn't nip hard at all.

But I'm sure others will have recommendations for you also.

Welcome to the forum!

I just finalized the adoption of my first two bunnies, and I will betaking them home in June. Unless you are interested in showing apurebred, I am partial to adoption. There are so many rabbits dumpedeach year, and you would be doing a great thing by adopting. Andsometimes you can still find babies. Devon (one of my bunnies-to-be) is7-8 weeks.

As for small bunnies being less friendly, I have never heard that.Maybe some of the experst on this forum would have a more definitiveanswer.

Good Luck,
bunnydude

i've been told by many ppl that dwarfs r not agood first rabit because they tend to b nippy. i wont adopt for reasonsthat i dont want to state. i'm currently thinking about seraching for abreeder or going to shows to find some. i also wont buy from a pet shopbecause i dont agree with animals bing kept there. it has to be a smallrabbit due to limited space, i dont have the room for a cage to house alarge rabbit and my parents dont want a free roaming bunny all thetime. i've heard many good things about holands, they r said to bfriendly but ive also had ppl say bad things.

I like the adoption idea as well, 2 of my 4 areadoptees...One being a beautiful mini-lop. I agree withTiny's mom...they have a WONDERFUL personality...3 of my 4 are thatbreed....2 of the 3 are VERY holdable...the 3rd is very tame, just hasbigger things on his agenda than sitting around cuddling!

Good luck and be sure to check out the local shelters! The 2 I adoptedwere 35 each and already spayed...the 2 males I have were 30 each andanother 70 each for the neuter...not only is it cheaper in that route, but its saving a life!

Hollands are gentle and sweet. A bit timid but very loving. NetherlandDwarfs from bad breeders can be nippy and grouchy, but that's not thesame as Holland Lops. Two different small breeds, very differentpersonalities.

Oh yeah.....they are rather "dim bulbs" sometimes.:pI havethree, it's one of my favorite breeds, but they are not the brightestcritters. hehe. But so loveable.

And the smart ones can be stinkers--so go for a Holland!

I have 7 rabbits and 6 of them are of a dwarfbreed, including 2 holland lops. None of my dwarfs have ever bitten me,and the hollands are especially sweet natured. You just can't go wrongwith a holland lop. When you look for a bunny handle them and pick onethat doesn't panic being held. One of the first bunnies I picked up wasa netherland dwarf who was quite skittish and hasn't improved a bit inthe 8 months I've had her. Subsequent bunnies I have purchased I alwayshandle them and pick the one that is the friendliest and I've gottensome wonderful bunnies this way:D.

I highly reccomend Holland lops they have greatpersonalties.I raised them for years.I also like Netherland dwarfswhich i raise.I also reccomend Polish which are not a dwarf breed butare small.bluebird

I wasn't going to post here, because I wasreally put off by the attitude about adopting and pet stores, howeveras a pet store manager, I've found that I feel the need to defend thesesituations in general.

FirstI just wanted to say that while Holland Lops aregenerally wonderful rabbits, personality is really an animal to animalthing, with any animals. My Holland has a realattitude. She's ok with me, but hates everyone else and allmy buns except my Mini Lop buck.

Second, as for pet stores, at my store, the rabbits are kept betterthen those at some breeders and pet owners that I know. I'veseen breeder facilities that are a mess. Our rabbits get timeout of the cage every day, twice a day and have a clean cagedaily. They get a high quality food, fresh water, hay andgreens. We get them from a variety of sources, but they allthe breeders have been checked out and the animals are vetchecked. I understand that many people have had bad pet storeexperiences, but not all pet stores are bad. Sage, my MiniLop, is a pet store bunny and he is simply wonderful. If youresearch and find a responsible pet store, you can get wonderful adviceand a great animal.

Third, there are so many wonderful rabbits, well animals in general, who just need a good home. They may be a bit older, but theyare typically spayed or neutered and have had good vet care.Possibly the biggest plus, in my opinion, is that the personalities ofslightly older animals do not change. I always recommend topeople who are new to animals such as rabbits and ferrets that theyadopt a slightly older animal because the hormones have had a chance toset in and settle down. Also, you miss that "terrible two's"stage when most people decide these aren't the animals for them andthat's why the animal is in the shelter in the first place. Ihave seen babies that are just so sweet turn into monsters when theirhormones set in and then become sweethearts again once they have beenspayed or neutered and had a chance to settle down.

I'm sorry if this offends, but it's something I feel very strongly about.

Im not sure about them biting more.Mine bite meonly when i make them mad or i have a food smell on my hands but theynip not actually bite.Thumper is a a Mini-Lop and she is very laid backand loves to be right up my behind.she follows me and really dont getthat far from me.Fay is a holland lop and she is VERY hyper andentergetic, she likes to run from me when its time to come back insideand likes to play catch me if you can lol. but i really think itdepends on there personailty i love small breeds expeciallyLops:4hearts:Ashley:4hearts:

Hello,

I have a Holland Lop and a Mini Lop and love them bothdearly. They are both sweet, but like Rose said, the Hollandis not the brightest bunny. She's like a sweet, little puppy, following the others and me around the house.

i didn't mean to offend anyone. i know theconditions of the local pet stores because my aunt is a vet and hasseen the horrid conditions of the animals that come from the pet storein my area. i wont adopt because the shelter here is horrible! they arevery rude and the employees have the attitude that a kid should not geta pet. my parents r very against adopting one for me because they havedone research that unless we're prepared to take on the problems thatmay arise from adopting an older animal that suffered months or yearsof neglect. my aunt has recomended a breeder to us.

There must be more than one shelter thatyou van adopt from? You can also find baby's in shelters, ifyou are prepared to wait!

samandshawn is right, you can find babies. Thebunny I'm adopting is only 7 weeks old. If you don't like your localshelter, check out http://www.petfinder.com. I'm going abouttwo and a half hours away to get mine. Also, rabbits that are only ayear or two old are still in their prime.

theres only one shelter and i'm set on going tothe breeder. they have more reliable information. even if i wanted toadopt, my parents wouldnt let me.

i'm thinking of showing in the future so thats another reason to go to a breeder
