Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Ive been doing some research and Im actually thinking about taking max to another vet (its an hour away but recommended by the local rabbit rescue as a good rabbit vet and dentist). I know the tooth needs to be removed, but I just feel like my vet isnt going about this like we should. Hes in the process of referring me toa specialist, but basically I would just be taking Max in for the surgery and meeting this new guy the day of.

I want to talk to whoever is doing this. My vet said he didnt think the upper incisor would need to be removed, but I want to hear this from someone who does these surgeries often. My vet doesnt have any experience with this. Also, as you said Naturestee, I was also surprised he didnt want an xray.

I think with Max's runny nose problems, we should have an xray to make sure everything is okay with his upper teeth as well. Also, I want to discuss the procedure ahead of time. My vet said he was screening the specialists he was calling to be sure that they dealt often with rabbits (using the proper anesthesia and antiobiotics and such), but I want to discuss what will be done before we show up for surgery.

Ive heard some good things about these beads that they implant after the tooth is removed, to prevent infection and reoccurance. Anyone had any experience with this?

I'll keep you all posted..thanks for the prayers.

We have an appointment finally for Max to go see the specialist!

I spoke with theguytoday (he was actually my vets dental professor at MSU 20 years ago) and he is very knowledgeable. He said I will bring Max in on thursday morning and he will take a look at everything and do xays etc. Then he will just perform the surgery that day.

Im so nervous..praying for my little guy.

:hearts:GET WELL SOON MAX!!!!:hearts:

I hope the poor baby is feeling better soon, that's great that you found a good specialist for him! Me and Harper are keeping our fingers (and paws) crossed for Max!

We're going in tomorrow for Max's surgery..I wont know until after he does the Xray how many teeth are getting removed..for now its just one.

Im so nervous I dont know if I can sleep. :tears2:

I know I worry too much, but none of my buns have ever had to have any surgery besides the neuter..Im just very nervous for my little man.

I'll let you guys know how it goes when we get home tomorrow (probably late afternoon-evening).

all prayers are very much appreciated :)

Please keep us updated!

I don't know if you've been told what to expect yet, but his mouth will be sore for a while. Be prepared to make pellet mush for him. He might even eat it willingly, especially if you make it really tasty.

I've been thinking of Max all week, hope all goes well tomorrow, and it's an easy fix.

Have you been giving him treats with the syringe? Always a good idea for him to view it as his friend.

Pipp hates Critical Care, I tried it on its own at first, and she positively recoiled. Even after I spiked it with honey (the vet's advice), she wouldn't go near it. Had to re-bond her with the syringe later on.

She goes through dental surgery all the time. She survives on pumpkin for a few days -- and I have to dry it out a bit and warm it up a bit before she'll eat it.

Grated carrot andgratedcerery gooverwell, too. I've putveggies in the blender, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Carrot juice (spiked with a little water for better hydration, less sugar) is a big hit, too. She prefers it from a syringe, not a bowl.

Will be thinking of you guys tomorrow!

Give him a kiss on the nose for me.

thanks for the tips guys!

I was planning on just mushing up pellets, but I think he would enjoy the other stuff (grated carrots, pumkin etc) in addition to the pellets, or in case he wont take the pellets.

I bought some different flavored baby food that Ive been giving him a little bit of through a syringe every day, so hes used to it a little. I also stocked up on lots of organic juices in preparation for any post-surgery difficulties.

Do you think I should buy anything like pedialite or critical care etc just in case? Im going to run to the store while he's at the vets for the day and pick up any last minute supplies.

Thanks for all the help and support guys :)

Well, you know he likes the pellets he's used to, so I'd stick with those. Just make sure you soak them for awhile, at least a good 10 or 15 minutes. You can mix pumpkin, banana or anything he really likes in with them to make it tastier.

Are they Timothy-based pellets? (Not that it really matters). Critical Care is good for fiber -- timothy and other grasses --and some vitamins, but it's pricey and a waste if the bun doesn't like it, so I find it best to augmentregular pellets with pumpkin and whatever else I have to bribe her with.

I do believe Nutri-Cal hasthe 'B's', so that and his regular pellets is just as good. Pumpkin will help with the fiber.

If he likes baby food, that helps. (Pipp hates it).

Make sure you get post-oppain meds. They don't always offer them. Aside from the tooth cavity itself hurting, the poorguy's face will be sore from the device they use to crankhis mouth open.

Pipp gets Medicam. I think it takes about 10 hours for the first dose to work. And it's best taken with food, easier on the tummy.

EDIT: And I'd definitely get the Pedialyte, that stuff saved Pipp's life before she was diagnosed. I'm a fan!

EDIT 2:Mind you, we're doing very well with carrot juice, too...

EDIT3 (LOL!!): The apple juice and other juices didn'tdid work so well.

Thanks sas!

I dont know what I'd do without you guys ;-)

His pellets are timothy based...im sure he would love them mixed with some yummy banana..good tip.

Okay, going to bed now...I'll keep you guys posted

ATTN!! Taking bets now on an empty-handed shelter exit for Haley! My guess? It ain't gonna happen. (Maybe tomorrow... maybe the next day... but hey, five to one it won't last!!)

I'm sure Max isin good hands.

Best of luck tomorrow, I'll be thinking of both of you. Do your best to resist while you're in the shelter, don't want your little man feeling like he's being replaced now do you? I know I volunteer at my shelter, and when I come home both my dogs and bunny get mad at the way I smell, lol, yes, I'm a traitor, I admit it.

We're home!

Max is such a little trooper. The vet showed me the xray of theteeth..top ones are fine (so not sure about that runny nose...hmm..)but that front one was bad..the abscess was pretty big but he said hewas able to remove the entire thing.

Maxisstill pretty doped up, butI thinkhe's feeling fine. The first thing he did when hehopped outof the carrier was run in his cage and eat pellets, drink some water, then he used the litter box and wentand sat downtoeat cecals. I didnt expect him to be so well, so imthinking maybe its still the effects of the drugs.

Anyway, we bought lots of good stuff (bananas, pumpkin, parsely etc) incase he loses the apetite tomorrow. Max will be onantibiotics for 2 weeks.

The only thing was I asked the vet about pain meds and he said he gavehim something that should last for 24 hours, and he didnt think Maxneeded any more. I told him I was pretty concerned and I thought weshould have some. He said he was worried about giving Max too manydrugs (didnt want to mess up his eating/pooping or something) but Imnot so sure about that.

I have to go to my regular vet tomorrow to pick up more antibiotic, doyou guys think I should have him give me some pain meds? I know he willif I ask...

Thanks!

-Haley

(o and the shelter was awesome! no bunnies home with me (yet :)) I'll write more about it in my blog)

Max let me look at the incision...poor little man :-(

Hes eating great though. So far he had pellets and a little piece of a banana treat and some carrot juice.

I think maybe bc that abscess was there for a few weeks, he probablygot used to using his lips more and then chewing with the back teeth..

Heres hoping he continues to do so well!

Ack! My computer is giving meproblems, it keep bumping me back to the previous page and deletingwhatever it was I was posting. I thought I managed to getthis posted before, but I see it was also a victim! (Errantwireless mouse/keyboard combo).

------------

Glad to see Max is hopping right to it! And REALLY glad the vet could get the whole abscess out.

And yes, the true test will come when the pain meds wear off in 12 to24 hours. If he stops eating then, more pain meds areprobably a good idea.

Medacam isn't great for the kidneys, but not eating isn't great for thedigestive tract and pain stresses out the whole body.

And vets always seem to think the shot the bunnies get at the clinic is going to last a lot longer than it really does.

Kisses and nose pats for Max! (And a few pets for Haley, too)

Keep us up to date!

It's awesome that he's doing so well! How is he now?

As much as we push pain meds, I think it's good that your vet only gavethe shot. That way you can see how he reacts and if he reallyneeds more pain meds. That's what my regular vetdoes. The emergency vet prescribed several days worth ofMeticam, and wouldn't you know that it sends Fey straight intostasis? She did fine once I stopped the meds.

He's still doing great this morning! Basil is making sure to take extra special care of him (lots of grooming and snuggling).

I called my vet this morning because I have to get a refill on theBaytril and I left him a voicemail. I asked if he could possibly giveus some medicam for this weekend, just in case. I thought it would begood to have on hand (especially since they're closed on the weekend)just in case I think Max is in any pain.

Just out of curiosity, do you guys know about different flavors ofBaytril?? I know Naturestee said something before about apple or bananaflavored. Is this something different the vet has to order, or is itjust the regular baytril in a flavored suspension? Max hates the stuffhe has now!

Thanks Guys!

Haley

PS...Sas...thanks soo much for the carrot juice idea! its great to mixwith the baytril (and Basil found some in a little cup I had put on thefloor for Max, and downed it..he has a little orange nose now..I keepreminding him that he's not the one who had surgery) :)
