Hi Naturestee, thank you for the message. :)The Tramadol seems to be helping her a lot. She isn't grinding her teeth anymore and is moving around a little bit. She isn't eating on her own yet,but she has started pooping a little bit so I am very happy.

I am sorry to hear your husband suffers from fibromyalgia.Ishe onthe pain killers for long term, if you don't mind measking?

Yeah, he's on opiates for life. BTW Tramadol is less addictive than most other opiates but it's still addictive. If she's on it for a while, watch out for extra crabbiness when you stop.

Yay for poop!

Hi Naturestee,

Thank you for the advice. Layla was only on the Tramadol for 3 days so hopefully she won't feel too crummy after she is off it. She has been in a grumpy mood all week anyway, the poor thing.

Does thelong term use of Tramadol have any harmful effects for your husband? (Again, if you don't mind me asking).

I had to put the syringe in the side of her mouth...syringe a little at a time...and then move the tip of the syringe around to make her move her mouth and then she would swallow. It took FOREVER, but it was the only way I could get her to take a beneficial amount.

Hi JimD,

Thank you for that advice. Moving the tip of the syringe around in her mouth has actually helped make her swallow the critical care! You are a legend!

Layla had another check up at the vet today (free again!). Everything is looking fantastic and I am booked in for another check up next week. She got a penicillin injection and will need them weekly for a while.

Layla has also started eating on her own a bit, which is great. She will only touch her favourite veggies though and isn't eating herpellets yet. She is also drinking and pooping so I think all will be well now. :)

I have been having trouble feeding it to her as she will keep it in her mouth and refusues to swallow it. I can't put any more in her mouth because she just lets it dribble out, and I don't want her to choke on it. I have had to make it more watery and divide it into a few syringes as she swallows more ofit in liquid form.
S'more would hold everything in her cheek, too.

She also had problems swallowing if I held her on her back. I had to kind of sit her up with her butt on my thigh and cradling her in the crook of my arm. Luckily she never bites.
Ugh! i know how it is with trying to give a stubborn bunny medicine,it can be just impossible sometimes,Strawberry is one of my stubborn bunnies, and i sorta did what Jim did,i wiggled the syringe around a bit and she would end up swallowing the meds, otherwiseif i didn't do thatshe would just let it dribble from her mouth...stubborn little mule she is! :disgust:

I'm glad to hear that everything is going well with Layla, that's just great that she is starting to eat on her own again..that is a start,i'm sure when she is feeling even better then she will start to eat her pellets again :)

How is her attitude,is she still being aggressive?

For a beautifulLayla..

Thank you so much Cheryl. I just gave Layla a kiss from you. :)

Attitude wise, Layla is still being grumpy and aggressive, but she is slowly forgiving me. She still grunts and charges if I approach her,but if I sit still for a bit and she realises that I am not about to medicate and clean her, she will let me pat her for a moment.

She used to be queen of bunny kisses, oh how I miss them. I hope that I can build up to the relationship we had before. She would sit on my bed and groom me every night while I petted her. She is avoiding me like the plague in my room at the moment.

I think her spay will have to wait till we are friends again, because if I put her through another surgery too soon after this I think she will never trust me again. She is still fairly young so there is not too much of a rush for the spay at the moment.

Aww i'm sure that when Layla is all healed and sheno longerneedshermeds, then she will slowley warm up to you again, she will forget about all the bad stuff ;).

Yeah,it would probably be wise to hold off on the spay for a while, let her recover from her ordeal first :)

Don't worry Eve,Layla will be back to lovin her mum in no time :hug1

:blushan:....not really all that!

Credits should go to Carolyn for that one!! ;)
She gave me so much advice and moral support when S'more got so sick with her GI infection. :hug2:

I'm more than happy to pass it on for others.

Carolyn thought it was funny the way I described how S'more would act just like my daughter when she was a baby. She'd hold in those strained peas until she would finally grin and let them dribble down her chin.
S'more would add to the insult by flicking "whatever" all over the place.
I still have pumpkin and Nutrical stains on the ceiling.:disgust:

Sounds like things are starting to head in the right direction for Layla.
Give her a scrunch from me!
Keeping you in my prayers and send good thoughts.

Edited to add:
S'more didn't trust anyone when we first got her, and it got worse when she got sick. While she was sick and getting all the meds, she turned to being moderately aggressive. However, by the time she had recovered she had bonded sooooo close with me and now trusts me to do just about anything with her.

Hi Eve! I'm glad to hear Layla's doing better. Eating anything is very encouraging, even if she's being picky.

I did a search and couldn't find any info on long-term effects for Tramadol, and James wasn't told of any. The only long-term issue is addiction. But three days probably isn't enough, as like I said before it's much less addictive than other opiates such as morphine.

She may be mad at you now, but once you can stop giving her meds and cleanings she'll probably like you again. I've been through that with Fey and Loki. Loki had to get ointment in his eye twice a day and he hated me. Until a few days after I was able to stop, and he was cautiously back to his loving self.:)

Just a quick update:

Layla recovered from her previous surgery very well and she got spayed today.

I was so worried about her all day, but am pleased to say that all went well and she is doing ok. The vet took such good care of her, I am so happy my little girl is alright.

Shehas beensitting at the back of her cage all evening. She did take a treat from me earlier and chattered her teeth when I was petting, her so it all looks good so far. She seems a lot better than she was after her previous operation. The vet said she should be in less painafter the spay than she wasafterher other procedure, which is good.

Now I am just hoping she starts eating and doesn't pull at her stitches.

I have set up my sleeping bag so I can be with her all night. Unlike after her other operation, she is being really cuddly and seemstolike having me around today.

That's great Eve!,i'm glad everything went ok

You must feel so relieved nowthat it's finally over and done with

I hope this means that Rodney and Layla will be able to bond much better nowonce Layla is all healed..if you are going to bond them that is!

Sending lots of healing vibesfor Layla:kiss:

Thank you so much Cheryl. :hug2:

Yes, I am really relieved it is done now. I had been putting off getting it done for a while now, and when I finally decided to go through with it she had to have a different surgery. So I am really glad she is finally spayed.

And yes, when she is fully recovered I will be bonding her and Rodney.I have been trying to bond them for months. They get along very well outside and the only thing holding the bonding back was Layla's hormones. She obsessively humps Rodney, and although he has never bitten her,I can tell he gets upsetwith her after a while.

Thank you again for the healing vibes, they are very much appreciated.

Aww maybe Rodneyis just an understandable kind of guy ;)

It will be so good when those two are finally together,i hope everything works out for you..i'm sure it will anyway! :D

Thank you JimD :D

Thank you LuvaBun, I am really happy that she seems to be doingso well too. Sleep or no sleep, it doesn't matter too much because it's the weekend as of tomorrow. :)

Cheryl, yes Rodney has been quite patient with Layla during the bonding sessions. He seems to really like her, he follows her around everywhere outside. It would be a dream come true to have them fully bonded. They could free roam together where as now they only have half a day each while the caged bunny looks on with jealousy.

Layla hasn't pooped or peed yet, but it is only the morning after the spay so I am hoping she will by the end of the day.

She is only eating shredded carrot and apple so far, but at least that's something.

I am having so much trouble medicating her, as I can't put her in the bunny burrito because of her tummy. She seems to be coping fairly well though, and is being very affectionate. :)

Missed this one!

Im so glad to hear the spay went well. Youre such a great bunny mom, preparing to stay up with her and everything. Shes lucky to have a mom like you :D

For medicating, sometimes what I do with Max is set him on my lap and hold him close with one hand and then put the syringe in his mouth with the other. Sometimes it helps to drape a towel or blanket over them so theyre less inclined to move.

That way you dont have to flip them over or anything. Did they give her pain meds?

I'll be praying for a speedy recovery for your little one

-Haley:pray:

Thank you Haley, that means so much to me:hug2:

Thank you very much for the medicating tips, I will try them when I give Layla her meds tomorrow morning. I don't think I can put her on my lap because she will hate that and get upset, but draping a towel over her should work a treat. :)

She is getting 0.6ml of Metacam for pain once a day. She is going back to the vet on Monday for a checkup, and to discuss the xrays to see how her teeth are going after the previous op. She is in such good hands since I changed vets, I am still so thrilled about my new bunny vet.

Thank you again for your advice and prayers!

Some food is better than nothing. I've noticed with my girls that it sometimes takes them a while to start pooping again because everything was pretty much cleared out.But if she's eating she should start pooping and peeing soon.

Eve, would she eat her meds if they were mixed in something, like a little pumpkin or unsweetened apple sauce? Some buns wil ltake that willingly, and it's much less of a fuss.

I'm so glad she's doing ok! No sign of the abscess then?

Hi Naturestee, thank you for the advice :)

I think Layla just doesn't like being syringe fed, so even if the meds are mixed with something tasty she still isn'twilling to eat it.If I puther meds in apple sauce on a plate, she willeat a bit of the mixtureby herself but thenleave some behind. So seeing as she really needs to get all of her pain meds, I think I will need to keep force feeding them to her even though she hates it.

How long after a spay is it ok for her to go without pooping and peeing? I am thinking if she doesn't poop by tonight, Iwill start feeding her the critical care my vet gave me. She has eaten some apple today but it really wasn't much.

And luckily there is no sign of the abscess, it all looks to have healed very nicely.

I fed Layla some critical care earlier today and she just pooped and peed! And now she is eating her veggies on her own!I am over the moon. :jumpforjoy:
