Latte has just started to act strange out of nowhere just a couple hours ago. He was starting to lose his balance a little. One ear is up and one ear is down and his head leans to one side. He seems to not walk in a straight line either. He was on antibiotics for a while for an upper res infection, but was taken off.He started sneezing a little and now this just today. Their is no close24 hour rabbit vet around. Is this the start of head tilt? Could he have an ear infection from the res infection? I'm going to bring him to the vet tomorrow morning. Thanks.

It does sound like the start of head tilt, which could be caused by an ear infection or E. cuniculi. Please let us know how the vet visit goes.

I hope it isn't...my poor baby. He hasn't fallen from high up or any trauma, so my only guess is an infection. Can head tilt be treated? Can he live well w/ head tilt? :cry2My poor baby was running so straight and narrow yesterday w/ Drizzle. I'm gonna cry. I hope I can wait to take him tomorrow.

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry something seems wrong. I hope your baby will be okay. If you browse the threads, there are some buns that live a decent life w/headtilt. Keep us posted, :pray:for you and your bun.

Thank you for the info, naturestee. :hug:I've been reading up on it. Now,since he had a mild upper res infection, that could have caused an ear infection, correct? Now if that gets corrected, the head tilt should be stopped a bit. :fingers crossed: Oh I just feel so bad for my poor little man. Also, he stopped sneezing and started to act better so I had him around Drizzle. Can Drizzle get this as well?Should I bring them both in?

Update! Just got back from the vet. I called when they opened and the Dr. told me to come in. I feel bad though because my husband was an hour late for work, even though he didn't mind, I felt bad. Anyway, so I brought Driz:bunny5 and Latte:brownbunnywith (good news was they snuggled in the car!). Latte is a little better this morning, walking more even running (even if it isn't straight) and can stand straight today, last night he was really losing his balance. He got checked out. Vet said because he had an upper reinfection and that it was a sudden onset (and the way his ears are sitting), it is most likely an ear infection. He said w/ E. Cuniculiit's usually more of a gradual decline, and since it was so sudden (and he wasn't sneezing until yesterday again). Which is what I thought too after reading all the info. I brought Driz in too to get checked out.He said Driz is 100% (he had a runny nose before from Latte's infection and was on antibiotics as well) and the piggy gained 7 ounces since the last time I brought him in. But, the vet said from what he saw of Latte, his prognosis is good and that I caught it at the first sign(thanks to RO for all of it's info, I called it as soon as I saw it!).Of course, he'll always be prone to more infections later on, but we'll treat it the same. He's on Baytril for 14 days and on Meclizine for his dizziness for 5 days. He also gave me Critical Care because Latte didn't eat very much last night. He had a half of a carrot and I had to syringe feed him water this morning, but he left his greens and hay last night, which he usually wolfs down. However, as soon as I brought him home, the first thing he did was drink a ton of water and eat his pellets (he has hay available for his GI tract too). He told me to give him the Critical care if he stops eating. But everything seems hopeful. He says he might always have a slight tilt, but since it's not at all severe yet and I caught it early, it's definitely survivable. Great thing is I work from home so I can keep a very close eye on him. If he doesn't get any better or gets worse, he has to go in foracomplete bloodwork up and other tests, although right nowwith the progression and symptoms (and the previous onset of an upper res infection), he didn't think it was necessary.

Thank you everyone for all the prayers! They seem to be working! Keep em' comin...he'll need them.:pray:And pray for me...I'm not done Christmas shopping yet. God this week and a half has been so stressful (Xmas, stuff w/ the husband, the buns) that I feel like I could cry at the drop of a hat. And, well, I have been. I go from to :cry4:in a split second I think i'm going :craziness

Update 9:45 AM
He's still eating his pellets and drinking water from a bowl. Yay!:bunnydance:At least there is some good. Also, he can get in and out of his litter box with no prob. It was funny at the vets, the doctor said "Aww" because as he was explaining all the meds to me, I was holding Latte and he was smothering my face with kisses!:inlove:He's such a strong special boy.

Sounds like you have a pretty good vet. Between him and you, Latte's in pretty good hands! I'm glad he's acting a little better today.
Thanks. Yeah, Dr. Loxter camp is really nice and good. He's also specifically an exotics vet so he knows what he's talking about. I'm watching the little man very closely.

For the dizziness meds, they are in tablets. He told me to crucnch the mand mix them w/ a little water and syringe it. Can I mix it with some water and mash in a little banana? He doesn't want to take it (had to force him).

How did I miss this last night?:dunno:

I was actually just thinking about you and the boys this morning and wondering how bonding was going. Sounds like they are doing well with one another. Thats one good thing, at least. ;)

Im so sorry to hear about Latte. I hope its just an ear infection that can be cleared up with the antibiotics. Sounds like your vet really knows what he's doing. I'll be praying for a speedy recovery!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday. I know how you feel though, its such a stressful time of year and then to have sick bunnies..ugh.

I'll be keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. :pray:Give the boys kisses from me and my crew.

-Haley :hug2:

Sorry, I missedthis too :hug2: My Peanut started showing signs of a head tilt back inJune. She was treated for both an inner ear infection andE.cuniculi, but the tilt remained. Many bunnies do make afull recovery, but they can also adapt to life with a head tilt.

If you're interested in reading about our experience, you can check outmy pets' blog: http://www.xanga.com/domesticzookeeper - the posts aboutPeanut's health saga are listed in the left sidebar about halfway downthe page :)

I will be praying for Latte

yeah, you can try all sorts of things to spice it up for the little guy. Max likes when I mix his with pumpkin or banana baby food. He will eat it right off the spoon. Some people put tablets inside a banana chunk and the buns will eat that..or inside a raisin or something.

Hope this helps!

PS. is the baytril flavored? You can mix that with all kinds of things as well to make it easier for him to take.

Thanks Haley and m.e.! :hug2:

m.e., I'll definitely look at your blog later. I know he may never get completely back to normal, but I'm hopeful since it's not too bad right now. It's like, if on a clock, he's tilting to about 55/57 after on clock. So even if it stayed like that, he's at least notfalling over like he was las t night. Last night, his head was tiltin glower and lower and he'd fall over. Now he's walking, running, jumping around. Good signs I guess. That thank you for the link. :hug:Give my love to Peanut. The poor thing.

Haley, I gave them kisses and they kissed me back, so I guess they were sending those to you and your little brood (I almost said boys, but I forgot about your new little princess too!). Yeah, I'm just trying to make sure he's eating and pooping ok too. I know that this is survivable (since he's sure it was an ear infection) but the recovery will be a lot longer if he doesn't eat to keep his strength up. But we had a little talk just me and him and I told him he has to be a strong boy and if he is, he'll get a lot more xmas presents and will get t oplay w/ Driz more. He gave me kisses and started eating like a monster!

Yes, bonding in the car today was good. They were pretty aggressive recently but that car ride REALLy made them snuggle. Although, when we got to the vet, Driz was mounting poor Latte :disgust:. Way to assert your dominance when the other bun can't stand straight. Not the time and place, Drizzle!

But thank you Haley, I hope you and the crew have a very awesome Christmas!:snowflake:

Kisses to :rabbithop:dutch:bunny19:brown-bunny

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm not sure if the baytril is flavored. He took it ok though! :)

EDIT: It was pink, does that mean that it's flavored?

Question. He ate earlier this morning (pellet sand some hay). I think he's gone to the bathroom (I know pee for sure...there looks like there are new poops too) but I am going to clean the litterbox to keep better track. But he won't eat hay now and he tries to drink from the waterbottle ( I also havea bowl of water but he doesn't know how to drink from it)and can' t do it so well (but he won't syringe drink). Should I try toget him to eat and drink some more? Should I start Critical Care?

I did just get him to drink some water and eat a little hay. I also just gave him some greens but he won't eat them. :(

I would think as long as he is eating and pooping, you wouldnt need the critical care. You could always give him a little, just in case, if he will take it.

Definitely be sure he's getting enough liquid down. Did you try showing him the bowl? I would put him in front of it and put some water on you rfinger and let him see thats where its coming from..

If he cant drink from the bottle and wont use the bowl, definitely syringe him some water. Maybe put a little vanilla in it so its tasty for him or something.

Poor dear. :?

He got a little Critical Care earlier today and I think it increased his appetite. He's eating ok now. Still not sure on the water and I did syringe him a little more. I also put a little vanilla in his water in the water bottle and had put a tiny amount of cranberry juice in w/ his water in the bowl. Hopefully it'll make it more enticing.

He's eating hay and a carrot right now.

The critical care was not being had in the syringe. He really lo athesthe syringe. So I had to put it in a spoon and feed it to him, but he ate it at least.

Went to walmart last night and I bought somebanana baby food and I got a plastic screen to cut and place over the litter box soI could more easily see him droppings. Well, woke up this morning to poops! :litterhealthy:Nice sized ones too and not as small as the other day. And he drank half of his water bowl! :jumpforjoy:Yay! He ate hay last night and his carrot I gave him(no greens again though). He's eating pellets right now too.

Hurray!

So how is he doing today, balance-wise? Any signs of improvement?
Balance-wise, he's doing a little better. You can tell when he's tired because his head tilts a little more, but the tilt isn't even as bad a sit was the other day. He can get around just fine. He did have probs w/the water bottle a little still, but he drank a lot from the bowl las t night. I did syringe him 2 7-10ML of water tonight because he wouldn't drink. Other than that, he loses his balance really only when he tries to stand and stretch. If I left the top of the cage open, he used to be able to jump on it. Now when he tries that, he stretches and falls over. I just feel so bad because he liked to jump up onto things a lot and I don't think he'll be able to do that anymore.

But, everything else, so far seems good. The vet also called today to check up on him, which I thought was nice.
