It wasn't my plan, but hey things happen. Myfriend who owns the rabbit rescue here that I volunteer for called melast night. She says, hey I got in a new dutch female, it can beHarper's girlfriend! Come by tomorrow to see her! So, I went today andthe dutch was beautiful, but gigantic. A good 8-9 pounds, we think shemust be mixed with something. Too big for me to adopt and have adequateroom for, unfortunately.

Then she showed me the new little bunny she had gotten in the daybefore. A little dwarf named Thumper who is 4 years old that someonedecided they didn't want anymore. He's completely blind, and he has abad infected ulcer in his eye that's being treated now. My friend tookhim to the vet and all and got him some eye medicine, which she gave tome. She needed a foster home for him, and it took about 2 seconds ofhim snuggling in my arms for me to go, "Okay, I'll do it!"

So, we load him up, along with his cage and crappy food that came withhim from his previous owner (horrible stuff, with all the dried nuts init. We'll be changing that starting tomorrow!). The cage is wire bottomand rusted, so he's getting a brand new cage as of tomorrow, which I'llintroduce him slowly to. He's never been in any other cage, says hisowner, so anyone have any advice about getting him accustomed to a newcage without scaring him?

He is the most LOVING rabbit I have ever met. You have to say his namebefore you pick him up, or he startles. You also have to make sure all4 feet are against you, or he scares easy. Otherwise, he is SO lovingand just loves to be held and snuggle. What a heart bunny!

I never planned on getting a 3rd rabbit, but I think he's here to stayfolks! I told my friend that it's pretty much a done deal, I couldn'tlet go of him at this point, and I've only had him since noon! Here'ssome pictures below of him. He's 4 years old, and he's not neutered. However, I don't think I am going to put him through the stress of aneuter. He'll never go with any other bunnies, and he's got anincredibly sweet personality. I think we'll just leave his equipmentintact. :D

BTW, he's also very small, may 3 to 3.5 pounds with very short ears. We're guessing he's a nethie dwarf or a hotot, or a dwarf mix of somesort. His eyes are also red, but damaged with scarring and white spotson them, which you can't see good in the pictures. There's also only apicture of his left eye. The right eye has the ulcer, and he keeps itclosed most of the time, but opens it every now and then.

I'm just going on instinct here....

Put as much of his current stuff in his new cage as you can.
Don't clutter the cage so he won't run into things.
Start him out in an area that is quiet and has a little distraction as possible.
Maybe put one of your old shirts in his cage so he'll get use to your scent.

Aw, Jim that's really neat advice, an old shirt w/ your scent! Gee, sometimes it's just plain old common sense! :D

Congrats MBH! How wonderful of you. You're justwhat he needs, the little sweetheart. I cannot wait for morepics!

Jim, he'll be in a pretty quiet environment. I'mgoing to stack his cage on top of Harpers for now. The only noise is mydalmation who stays in my room and barks every now and then (not at thebunnies). However, his previous owner told my friend that her 3 youngkids constantly toted him around and were all over the place with him.Poor thing. So I'm sure he's used to noise.

As far as the cage, there's nothing in it, not even toys.:XOnly thing that's in the cage is a rusted wire floor, abroken plastic food bowl and a water bottle. And all 3 things are fromWalmart. The cage is a Walmart "wabbitat". I think I'll take a towel, rub it all over hisold cage for the smell, and put it in hisnew cage. I'll also give him one of my old shirts after I wear it for acouple hours so he'll have my scent too.

Thank you so much for caring about this little boy! He needs a warm comforting hand that you can give! God bless you!

What a beautiful boy! I wouldn't have been able to resist him, either...

I was just in the living room with him and TALK ABOUT A LAP BUNNY!! He sat in my lap for a while and then fell asleep!

I do have a concern however... he has a 'ticking' sound in his nosewhen he breathes. But, he also has a VERY tiny scrunched little nose, and everyone seems to think that's why. There's no sneezing or runnynose, so I doubt it's a URI. And the vet didn't say anything when myfriend took him in.

oh, he is so cute!

i would also keep his cage rather empty, and add things into it slowly.

he looks like a netherland dwarf to me, i would *guess* a himi sport(that would explain the white tip on one foot, the lack of completenose spot, and thewhite that goes up on the base of his ear.

Ohh, I want a chance to be in your shoes-LapBunny?! Might have to bunnynap-:embarrassed:. My husband says no more, 2'senough. Sure it is, until you have 2 wonderbunnies that arethe coolest things! :nod

I don't know, when we get our new house, one room will be the bunnyroom; so I can have onemore! Sorry, hubby!:whistlingI can only wish. I want to adopt.:ponder:

Can he easily find his food and water in the cage? Wondering since you said he cant see.

HAHA!! I was in exactly yourshoes...husband said two was enough and that maybe one day we wouldhave a bunny room and add to the amount of buns...

Now I find myself getting a third, and flying her in from across the country at that! :D

Of course, who could say no to that beautiful Trixie face?? :inlove:

Just make sure that everything stays in theexact place at all times, his food bowl and water bowl/bottle whateveryou are using,he needs to know where it is otherwise he'll get confused.

Another thing, when you approach him talk to him first so he knows thatyou are near and then just gently give him a pat, this way he shouldn'tget startled by any sudden movements

My little Lulu is blind,it took her a while to adjust at first, but shedoes really great now, she's myspecial little girl

OhhhThumper is a gorgeous little boy!

Aww he's gorgeous, good on you for adopting him!

Just my two cents worth, but I thing he's a lop cross judging by hiscrown and the spacing between the ears. Reminds me a bit of my oldrabbit ben who was a holland with aeroplane ears.

Bless him! He's such a little cutie - you'dnever tell from the pics that he's blind! I think it's a win-winsituation for you both; you get a snuggly bunny, and he gets a lovinghome!

Well done for taking him on :)
