So, ever since I found that abscess in Max'smouth, I have been pretty vigilant about checking the guys overeverytime they are being held.

Last night, I was feeling around Basil's jaw/cheek and I noticed adime-sized lump on his cheek. Its not hard, more dough-like, andcanbe moved easily so hopefully ithasnt affectedany of the teeth. It must have developed pretty much overnight though, because I know it wasnt there the day before.

I am just shocked. Basil is 6 years old and has neverbeensick once. Max is always the one going to the vet..I guess its Basil'sturn. Its just so overwhelming because I just spentso much onMax's operation and now this. ugh.

Anyway, we will be going to the vet this week. I think we will betrying a newvet thatwas highly recomended andIvebeen wanting to check out.

Please keep us in your thoughts. My poor boys :(

oooh, nooo!! Here's wishing that nasty zit into the cornfield.

Here's 'everything's okay' vibes for Basil!

(I think with this kind of diligence, it should be a simple fix!)

(And I sure hope your bunnies appreciate you!)

I really hope they appreciate me too :)

I called and was able to get an appt for Friday am. Its about a 40 mindrive, but definitely worth it to have someone who knows what they'redoing.

Also, it has been 2 weeks since Max's operation, so Im going to takeMax and have this new guy look at the area to see if its healing and ifthe abscess is completely gone.

Wish us luck!

Abscesses have a nasty way of popping up in otherwise very healthyrabbits (just ask Rex). Sending lots of (((go away nasty bacteria)))vibes to you and Basil.

m.e.: You know, when I first found that dang thing thats exactly who I thought about-Rex.

I remember you saying how Peanut has been getting all the vet care andattention and then out of the blue Rex got the abscess. Thats exactlyhow I feel :)

I hope they can take care of Basil's just as well as they did for Rex.

Haley,

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I've heard a lot about these"abscesses" on the forum. How do you check for them? Loki doesn't likeit when I touch his mouth. Is the bunny burrito an order? How do you doit?

t and Loki

hmmm..yeah bunny burrito would work, or trancingif he will let you do that. I just pet my bunnies and feelthem over while Im doing that.

Basically, an abscess is just a sac filled with pus (rabbit pus is hardand looks like cottage cheese). These can develop pretty quickly, andif left untreated, spread rapidly. Heres some info if you want to readup:http://rabbitsonline.net/view_topic.php?id=11791&forum_id=10

They can be located anywhere on the body (m.e.'s Rex had one on his toe) so checking them over is a good idea.

Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone for your kind words. :hug2

We have to be at the vet's at 7:45 am and its about 45min-1hr drive...ugh. I am soo not a morning person!

Anyway, I'll let you guys know how it goes when we get home.

Hopefully it will just be a quick procedure....keep us in your thoughts

Here I'm fooling around and you have to go tothe vet tomorrow. I just read this post, Haley, I hope that its notsomething serious and/or expensive. Good Luck

wow..that was quick!

I was right, it was an abscess. The guy felt it over and decided itwasnt affecting any of the teeth. He checked both Basil and Max's teeth(molars and everything).

He said Max is healing nicely. He put him on 2 more weeks ofantibiotics. I asked him about Bicillin, but he said he triesto stay away from those kind of antibiotics (maybe he just doesnt knowor something?)

Anyway, he was able to mask Basil and just create a little inscissionand pop the entire abscess right out. I dont know if this is common, but he said since he was able to get the entire capsule, he didnt needto put Bas on antibiotics. He just said to cleanse the areadaily.

Overall, I'd say it was a good visit. However, it cost me 240 bucks forsomething that took like 15 minutes. hmmm. I didnt say anything, but Ifelt like it was a bit expensive (seeing as how a neuter costs like afourth of that). But he is a veterinary dentist, so maybe he's moreexpensive.

The boys are happy to be home and hopping around in their room. I'lllet you guys know how the healing goes. Thanks for all your kind words!

Oh, and anieluv, dont feel bad...your funny stories took my mind off things for a bit!

I think that its good when they can get the thewhole capsule out. If you hadn't found it so fast it could have beenbad. I talked to Linda this AM and told her that I was telling herstories on the rabbit website. ..she just laughed...I have a lot more.Anyway Haley I hope that your bun recovers well. Gentle giants wouldhave taken Diamond as she pm'd me so I told her there would be anotherone after this that I will probably be after her about.
