Hello,

I am currently in the process of finding a reliable company to purchase rabbit insurance from. What companies do you all recommend, use, and advise against for rabbit insurance? I'm looking for a basic plan of around $15 per month (unless it has awesome benefits for more $). My older rabbit (age 4.5 years) is healthy to the best of my knowledge, this will simply be a preventative measure - specifically looking for something that covers illnesses and injuries, and preferably dental and wellness. So far, I am mainly leaning towards Nationwide's $12 bird & exotic monthly plan with a $50 deductible yearly. They cover 90% of the vet bills. It covers illness, injury, and accidents - Not wellness, but my wellness checkup is around $60 so that works for covering my deductible.

The max I have spent in a year was $1,250 for my rabbit (it was a tough year including spay, surgeries, and two rounds of G.I. stasis) and the least I have spent in a year was $95 (I learned home remedies, switched the pellet & hay brand, and used other resources). So average yearly costs are around $350 I believe. This being said, is insurance worth it considering the costs I have spent in the past? My rabbit is getting older, and I want something as a preventative measure, as she will be prone to more health related issues due to older age.

Thank you!

Right now I have their whole pet plan, I find it to be quite pricey but it’s my first year, I will need to pay for a wellness visit and neutering (plus the testing prior) if I squeeze in an extra well visit at the end of the year and have no emergencies (knock wood) I should about break even. I’m thinking that after this first year just opting for the plan you mentioned. At $12 a month that’s $144 plus the deductible is $194. If your average is $350 then you’d be ahead of the game financially. You could always of course just put the money into a savings account and withdraw as needed but my own personal feeling on insurance is that part of its value is the peace of mind that you are protected. Frankly, you’ll always hope to NEVER need it right? I mean in 5 years if you never used it wouldn’t that be a blessing!!! But it’s the one time something happens or god forbid there’s a major problem you’re not having to make tough choices over money. That’s just my thought anyway I know everyone will feel differently and of course your personal finances play a part as well.

What does the $12 plan include and the details? Are there other known pet insurances? To be honest we have a smallish savings account and have a line of credit we could use for emergencies but having insurance does provide some piece of mind for a serious health issue, it limits what you need to spend. A lot of people might delay going to the vet because they can't afford to go at that time. Having insurance definitely could help.

Give them a call as I believe the pricing varies by state!

Pricing does vary by state - the only way to get a small animal insurance quote is via phone.

I believe that screenshot attached above is not for small animals (rather dogs & cats) as it does not match the descriptions given by employees for rabbit insurance plans :)

The Avain & Exotic $12 monthly pet plan covers accidents, injuries, and illnesses. They are very vague with what is specifically covers, unfortunately. It does NOT cover any non-vet expenses, or pre-existing / hereditary conditions. It DOES cover cancer, dental diseases (no trimming or filing though), RX therapeutic diets & supplements (just prescribed medications), and specialty & ER coverage (this includes overnight boarding, etc). And then down to anything small such as an ear infection, etc. There is a maximum coverage per vet visit of around $280, depending on the specific problem. Again, this is just my understanding and hopefully it helps!
