How to deal with guilt after giving away bunny?

I had to give away my bunny Thumper to the humane society because of my living situations. I tried really hard to keep her but I just couldn't. I tried different things but it wasnt working She has been giving away twice and knowing that i was the 3rd person to let her down is hard to even think about. She is with a new family so i hope shes ok now but I cant deal with the guilt I cant stop crying and its hard to even think about it. How can I cope with these feelings?

Time heals, I am sorry you had to make this difficult decision. I am glad to hear that Thumper got lucky and found herself a new family that will hopefully provide the stability she'll thrive in.

Every time a negative thought trails into your mind, picture a big red STOP sign, and practice forgiveness and not allowing yourself to dwell on it.

"I did my best, and I forgive myself. This action does not define who I am, and I am worthy of love just as I am."

I hope you find some peace. Sometimes, we are destined just to be the "in between" to help critters get from a bad home to their best home (which is not always our own).

You have to make peace with the decision knowing you did what you could. Exhausted all scenarios and made the best decision for your baby. Making the decision is very hard but making it alos shows how much you love him. To want to give him the best chance and life. That you at this time were not able to give.

I'm so sorry, I wish I could give you a warm hug . As someone who recently adopted a bunny from the animal shelter, I wanted to give my perspective....and I can tell you that as an adopter, I don't think badly about the previous owner because I don't know under what circumstances they had to give up their bunny. Reading your story made me realize that there must be many people out there who were sad to give up their bunny but did so because they believe it was best for them and had no other choice.

Some people might be surprised to know that most apartments do not accept bunnies, and this is often a reason why people have to give them up. I myself almost had to do that if I hadn't met a very caring and bunny-loving boyfriend (now husband) who was able to take in my precious Walter at the time. So I understand what a tough choice that is to make.

Anyway, please look at the bright side, that at least Thumper isn't sitting alone at the animal shelter (which aren't the happiest places for buns). Now she has an adopted family that is able to give her the space and care she needs. And who knows, maybe someday soon your situation will change and you will have a bunny once again
