Hey! My name is Emily. I live in Michigan. I do not have any rabbits at this time. I did own some up until about 2 years ago. I had to give mine away because I developed an allergy and had to be hospitalized because of it. Although I don't have any rabbits, I still would like to share the knowledge I got while owning my rabbits.

Welcome Emily, its great you want to sharerabbit knowledge. There are always things to learn about rabbits.

What kind of rabbits did you have and do you have pictures of them?

I had to give up a Dutch and a Californian, although I have had rabbits before that (mini lop, Netherland dwarf, lionhead, and 2 Holland lops).

Here is a picture of the 2 I gave up. Cody (F)is the Dutch, Howie (M)is the Californian. They are at a rescue in south east Michiganif anyone is interested in them. I could give you the site to find them on and someone to talk to about adopting them.

Oh Emily they are just adorable! Are they still up for adoption? Are you still going to "visit" them and to check on them? Who is forstering them at this time? Can't imaging they are still in foster care 2 years later (being as cute as they are).

Back story needed..

Awwh What a shame :(Though I think its wonderful you want to share all your knowledge with us! That will help a lot!

Yup We definetly need a back story!

Unfortunately they are still at the rescue. They are at a rescue called Midwest Rabbit R&R (Rescue and Rehome) in Northville, MI. There are about 100 other rabbits at this rescue. Unfortunately since mine are black and white and Howie is a REW, they get over looked for "cuter" rabbits. It may also be that the adoption fee is pretty expensive. They are charging $150 for both rabbits. The adoption fee is supposed to cover them being fixed, but I had that done when I got them, so I don't know why the adoption fee is so much.

I e-mail the adoption coordinator every few weeks and ask them how my babies are doing. They have told me that no one has inquired about my rabbits. Even though I am highly allergic, I am considering going to the shelter and adopting them back since no one is interested in them. The rescue keeps the rabbits as long as it takes to adopt them out. If they are there for a long time they put them in a foster home. I don't think it'll be much longer until mine are put in a foster home.

Hi, Emily! Welcome to RO:)

Cody and Howie are ADORABLE!!! I really hope someone great comes along to adopt them.

I've been to Midwest, and I know that several volunteers are members here as well--they are such a great rescue!

I don't know how severe your allergies are (I'm assuming it's bad, though, since you were hospitalized), but my boyfriend is really allergic to our bunnies too. We now have two filters in ourroomand really try to make sure the cages are cleaned all the time. Also, are you allergic to the hay? It may be worththe effort to look into usingTimothyhay cubes instead of the loose hay because it's generally easier on people's allergies. I'm just throwing out some options in case you decide to get your bunnies back :)

Well, I don't know why I was so bad with the rabbits near the end of when I had them because I've had other rabbits before and never had a problem around them. I used to use Yesterday's News and other paper litters, but during the last couple months I think I was using the aspen my sister uses in her rat cages. I babysat one of her rats and was getting the same symptoms I had when I had the rabbits, so I think it might be that I'm allergic aspen. Air filters are a good idea... Are the rabbits in your room? Thank you for the ideas, I might end up using them. I made a deal with myself that if they are still there in March, I'm going to go get them. I would just hate it if I brought them home and got sick again and had to take them right back.

Welcome!

It's great that Midwest still has them, all things considered. I think many here are familiar with that shelter.

Perhaps you could post on one of the main boards about the bunnies and people could help you out.

We have a great library full of info on allergies, bedding etc...

Hi Emily:

First of all, let me extend a huge RO welcome to you!

If your rabbits are at Midwest, then you are very lucky. I know several people that are with Midwest, and can assure you that these rabbits will receive the very best, loving care than you can ever hope for. They do everything they can to get a rabbit adopted, but sometimes it just doesn't happen quickly.

I am affiliated with Gainesville Rabbit Rescue. When we foster a bunny, we commit to giving the bunny a loving home until they are adopted. We acknowledge that in certain circumstances it could take years. That's not a typo, GRR has successfully adopted rabbits that have been with them for 3+ years.

What I'm trying to say is to please be patient with Midwest. No matter what, your bunnies are in good hands.

Patti

Thanks Patti. I know they are in good hands, but I just feel really bad that they have been there for so long. The odds are against them since they are a pair and because they are black and white and Howie has red eyes. Logic tells me that they are better off there because I don't want to have to get them and return them because I was actually allergic to them and not the hay or aspen. I know they are loved there. I have talked tosome volunteers and they have all told me how good they are doing and how sweet they are.My heart tells me that my babies are homeless and no one wants them and that I should rescue them and bring them home. I'm going to wait until March and then my heart and logic will have to battle to see if I'm going to bring them home or wait for a new home to find them.

Your babies are not homeless or unloved. I can tell you that I get emotionally involved with every foster I have. They get the same care and love that my own bunnies get. The only reason that I don't keep each and everyone of them is that I know that every bunny that I adopt out to a good home opens up a spot to save another.

Your babies will never be homeless as long as they are with Midwest.

Hi there and welcome!

I recognize those buns! I volunteer at Midwest when I can get down that way. I also live in the Fenton area-glad to know theres another bunny person around.

I understand your frustration about your two not getting adopted- with so many bunnies the pairs especially seem to be overlooked. I took down two minirex girls, Mocha and Latte, whom I fostered for a few months, last April and they still have not been adopted. Its really sad but if they have to be anywhere Im glad they are at Midwest.

If you are really considering taking your two back maybe you should speak to Laura (shes actually a member here, although she doesnt post much) and see if you could try them again on a trial basis to see how your allergies are. I have pretty bad asthma and allergies and I have6 rabbits. I have 2 HEPA filters running at all times and I use Yesterdays News litter bc its not dusty or smelly at all. When I handle hay or clean litterboxes I try to wear a pair of gloves and sometimes even one of those painter's face masks.

Let me know if theres anything I can do to help!

Haley

Thanks Haley. I'll talk to her soon. I'm trying to wait until March after I move to think about getting them.

Next time you go down to Midwest, can you take some pictures of my babies for me?
