The thing that worries me about these diets is that if you stop using the "nutrisystem foods and shakes" and go back to regular foods you usually gain the weight back.

I think the best diet is portion control and adding exercise. Since we seem to eat WAY too much and barely move around.

I'm not really on a "diet" but I stopped eating dairy and eggs in january and I've lost 15lbs without even trying.Who knew replacing snacks of crackers and cheese with veggies and humus could make such a difference! My plan is to loose even more now that i've started an excercise plan too.

I agree with this. I am building myself a better meal structure and snacking structure and habits while leveraging nutrisystem until I figure out my regular foods.

I've been doing it a month and know that it works as prescribed. But eventually I have to go on with my life. When I did it hardcore as prescribed for the first week and then had my first taste of regular food On the weekend (I had grilled fish, a healthy choice) my stomach cramped up for a whole day uncontrollably. I didn't think anything of it until a friend told me it was common coming off nutrisystem. Now I do a 40/60 ratio throughout the week between regular food meals and nutrisystem meals. It also makes staying on the diet more bearable while having a crutch.

I have recently changed my lunch choices. I have always brought my lunch to work, along with some fruit for later in the day. A few weeks ago, I started making myself eat my fruit during my lunch. At first, I found myself scrambling to eat the fruit before lunch was over, then I noticed I was eating less of the meal but all of the fruit. Now, I am bringing less of my entree for lunch, and eating all of the fruit. (Lately, I am bringing one medium apple, already sliced. I also have some containers that hold 6oz, and if blueberries or something are in season, I just fill the container. Makes a nice amount of fruit.)

I have added a natural fruit leather for my afternoon snack. I get a brand made with nothing but fruit, so it's healthy. I have found that I am not any hungrier, and I know that replacing a portion of a calorie-rich entree with an apple is much healthier for me.

I do try to eat more filling foods, more whole-grains and fewer processed/refined things. The whole-grain things seem to make me feel more full, and for longer.

snuggy's mom-

i agree. please anyone reading my post understand that i work with a reg. diatitian. i talk to her about everything that i eat and how to do it in a healthy way

please anyone considering going on a low cal diet please understand that most people need at least 1500 cal in a day. if you are doing anything that seems extreme, please consult someone with the knowledge about whats going on. always, ALWAYS inform your doctor about diets you are trying and such.

i should also add that i am trained a little further with nutrition with my job. i have to be as a nutrition assistant. i understand portion controll more then anyone, i spend hours on the phone talking to patients every day about what it means.

i just don't want anyone not being safe doing a diet like mine. just understand that i work with people that know what they are doing, this all isn't advice from a friend or whatnot or some fade diet. portion controll is huge, and what you are eating. those are big steps to losing weight.

and while on the subject, i know most of ya'll wouldn't do this to yourselves, but i have to state it while we are talking about diets. if anyone is ever considering crash dieting, starving themselves, ect reconsider. as someone that still suffers from nerve damage in my stomach (not from starving myself, but that is a huge cause of it in many people), i can say that it's not fun. 6 months of bearly keeping food down, my liver was messed up from being sick all the time, i was a mess. just realize that there is a huge chain reaction in your body from doing one thing (like not eating for a day).

okay, i will get off my soapbox now. . .

Very insightful. Thank you!

I read a terrible article on glamour.com today about a bride-to-be who went on an extreme diet of only 520 calories a day, and she died of a heart condition that came on too quickly to be helped... It is important to know what's best for your body and diet wisely. 520 calories is not a healthy course to go on. I think everyone so far who has posted has made sensible diet changes though :)
