Got a phone call earlier and my horse, Dakota, was getting colicy. I had the vet out and he listened to his gut - yup grumbly and gassy. So he gave him a shot and we hung around with him for awhile. he seemed to feel better but I will be checking on him over night.

He was licking my hands by the time I left.... he's a big pupperhorse

Thanks :)

Kota is such a good boy. He was so neglected and abused by his previous owner. THey left him a stud in a barn full of mares for 3 years. He rarely got out and never got to go out on the pasture..... he had ulcers from all of that and the poor feed he got along with crappy hay. He would bite his sides from the pain. They said he was playing.... :X

I'm getting ready to go check on him before I go to bed. He's the sweetest thing. He used to have a pet kitten that lived in his stall with him.

This is my boy. In the winter he has the white crescent on his forehead, the white snip (stripe on his nose) and the mealy mouth coloring - in the summer he's almost solid chestnut. No white usually but maybe a few hairs on his forehead. It's so funny!

Thanks everyone :)

I stopped at the barn on my way to work this morning. When I walked in, the 2 mares that belong to my SIL were out in the covered arena. Pokie and Dakota were in their stalls - it's rainy today and we can't put them all out there - they fight.

Pokie nickered loudly to let me know she was very unhappy. Dakota had a piece of hay hanging from his lips, I said "Hey Bug! how are you?" He turned around, took a big poo, and ignored me.

I got the horse butt. :X

he's fine. He wanted outside LOL!

LOL!! I laughed so much when I read this! I'm so glad to hear that Dakota's feeling better. :) I've never owned a horse, but have been in love with them for as long as I can remember. And Dakota is such a handsome guy!!

A note on abuse...it's just so amazing that for every animal species Man has tamed and deemed a pet or used for some task, there are so many cases of abuse. A couple of years ago my sister and I went to NH for a mini-vacation, and (after much pleading on my part, as my sister doesn't care for horses) we went riding at a bed and breakfast. The horse I was given to ride was a draft mix, sweet as pie; and after the ride they told me a bit about his background. He had been used by loggers to haul trees out of the woods during the summertimes, but for some reason, whoever owned him decided at one point they no longer wanted him. So they tied him to a tree and left him alone in the middle of the woods, abandoned. Thankfully someone came along - not sure how long he'd been there, but he was getting pretty thin - and they rescued him. Now he works as a pleasure trail horse, but they only work him very gently.

So I think about that horse, and see the face of your Dakota, and while I still shake my head over hearing about abuse cases, it really does warm my heart to hear of the rescue stories...

Aww, glad to hear that Dakota seems to be on the mend... (that is what you meant by that last post right Bo? If not I'm sorely mistaken and sorry!) :)

He's a lovely looking horsey :D

Yep, he's good as new. The vet gave him the shot and he didn't go into full colic!!

He was rolling and grunting over the pain before I got there.A concern is that they can twist their guts too......

I'm not sure if I have posted this story but I will just because I love Dakota :)

It's sort of funny how I ended up buying him (I call him Bug so if I say Bug that's also Dakota LOL). Lexi rode with the granddaughter and they had all these horses. Kota was shown to me and they said he was 5 years old. He was smart, gentle and they thought with some work he'd be a great 4-H horse. They were right. He was going to be Lexi's horse. She ended up using her grandpa's horse (pokie) for awhile so Dakota could get some training.

I hesitated over it only because he was younger than I wanted, and he was sorta small. His brother was a National Champion pole bending horse :) He's so cute too!

So I finally said, OK...... I bought him and he turned THREE!!! They said they were wrong about his age..... DUH!!! So he was still a baby. Horses grow for about 5 years.... this line fills out for another 2 usually. My sister inlaw has his half sister and he's in that barn. He's grown a couple of inches and filled out so nicely. He's SUCH a sweetheart.

He's been a great guy and we love him. He's still learning, but last year at the 4-H fair - my son had never shown a horse, Dakota had never been in a show ring, and they Grand Championed in Showmanship - even taking Saddleseat over an Arabian! (he's not a saddleseat horse..... he's a cow horse! a Foundation Bred Quarter Horse)....

If I sound like I'm boasting..... I am..... I'm so proud of him and my son!

Oh and if I forgot to say this before..... Dakota also licks your hands... and arms and the farriers hair and back......... Most horses do not lick or they are going to bite...... Dakota licks..... like a dog. :p

That whole story weirds me out...

I just pictured my son and the neighbor boy licking Bo and some strange dudes hair...

LOL

My son's name is actually Dakota Blake.. we named him after a truck...don't ask.

My mom refused to call Blake "Dakota" because it wasn't a Christian name. So when we had our second son, I thought to myself "not a Christian name eh... I will fix her."

So my youngest son's name is Christian..

Nothing like naming your kid outta spite...HA.

Seriously Bo.. glad yer horse is better.

Oh, want to hear a great name story? When I had Lexi - we just couldn't agree on a name.... Hubby just wouldn't agree to anything and his suggestions.. oh gag! Like Frank for a boy... no I like different names - names you don't hear a lot (yeah, well there were NO Lukes when I named Luke and not one Alexis... yeah....)

anyhow.... We asked Luke finally and he said "hmm, I think I name my baby Alex!" and we said really? ok! but if it's a girl...... he said "Alex!" so we decided it would be Alex or Alexis. We named her and we came home and one day, Luke was watching television and said very loudly "Oh LOOK! It's Alex! I named my baby for him!".....

There is a grocery store here in the midwest called KROGER and they had a commercial that had a man "ALEX THE BUTCHER"..... oh yes, my girl child was named after Alex, the Kroger butcher.

Imagine his suprise when we met him and said "ya know, we named our child after you"........ :laughsmiley:

What a stunning horse Dakota is.

I cannot believe how people can neglect animals like that,it makes me mad at those kinds of people

I'm so glad he's doing much better :)
