Hello .

I have asked Carolyn if i could postthis and she said goahead its a good idea

so this is what its about

we are going to have alittle test for allwho are breeding their females

OK now take a reallgood look at the Doe pictured,Remember key points. color, size etc, ...... NOW the questions

1 . what breed is this , ( other than the obvious )

2. What could possably go wrong .

3. why is it wrong to breed in this way .

Now a bit of information :This doe is a cross breed , a verydangerous as far as i amconcerned and im sure there are otherwho will agree,

She is a product of a VERY! irrisponsable breeder ,

He wanted to:::

1. see babies born ( which he did not see )

2 wanted to see what would be the end product :

3. had no regards for this rabbits mother:

4 wanted to see what would happen( would it take or not )

and the one that grates me the most

5 wanted babies for no reasonother than to have them , thisis not aproduct of line breeding , this is aproduct of greed and stupidity .

Thankfully only 3 babies wereborn of this litter. andare very healthy asfar as i can tell right now . Monday will tellme better when shegoes in for a vet check, and a schedualed spaying ,

oh you ask why spaywell because for this Doeto breed would be verydangerous , and i WILL NOT be responsable forthis Doe's death !

NOW on to the littletest lets see how youdo , have fun with itand keep in mind thiscould beyou i am fussingabout .

Gypsy,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Unfortunately, I've seenmany people breed because they think babies are cute and would be funto play with. :?

Couldn't agree more that breeding is for the responsible andexperienced. You've brought for the very important points of what couldgo wrong with the babies and the does.

I actually thought you were going to explain in more detail thedifficulty this doe had in birthing her babies. I think it's animportant part of the story. Although hard to take, it's something thatsome folks don't consider when they do crossbreed.

I can explain more :

The mother of thisparticular rabbit haddifficulty birthing these 3babies because ofsize, now if i posted thepicture correctly you cansee in her hutch sheis almost as big as the hutchitself ,

hutch size is 22 inches long by 18inches wide , this particular rabbittakes up in lengththe whole cage .

this does not includethe ouside dimensions ofher feeding area andrelaxing area all my cagesare 5 ft long .

they are custom builtfor max comfort of rabbits .

the Mother was Dutchand it is up to all you whowant to breed for curiositysake to figureoutwhat the mother wasbred
The female who bornthese babies ( 3 ) is not aregular size Dutch sheis one of the small oneslike my Nubbins. in a ratioto human babies herbabies were equal to a humangiving birth to a 10 pound baby.

According to her previous owner shehas since been spayedBUT after babies wereborn she bled quiet profusly and had to beimediately vetted and stitchedup to say birthing thesebabies tore her up is alitteral statement.

The reason i know all this isbecause when i was interviewingthe previous owner i asked allthese questions and to my surpriseanswered them honestly .

Spiced: this is theonly surviving Kit from that litter ,this Doe will now livehere

as her forever home .
she was not wantedbecause for her usefullness as abreeding female was lost to thecross breeding , any babies she producewill be to big for herto ever birth no matterwhat she is bred to .

She must be carrying Flemish genesor something else big.

My rule of thumb is (besides breeding purebreds) is to make sure thebuck is smaller than the doe. No guarantee, I know, but..... Maybethat's just me, though.

But then--look at Fergi's Samara and who the dad was! Mum and babieswerefine and there was a BIG size difference there! hmmm.....

So what's the answer??:D

No Flemish is wrong

cant tell you till tomorrowwhen everyone has had a chance to guess .

I'm going to say a Holland Lop, but only because they are so popular a breed with BYB (Back yard Breeders) it seems.

Yes it is a New Zeland

People dont stop tothink of the conciquences ofbreeding . this is an offspring, whoother than a spayed pet hasno purpose in anyones herd but mine .

she will have a forever home here with me ,The Large New Zeland Doe whocame with her is alsostaying here with me ,generally when typng my hands get aheadof my brain and i started toputin about the other one and got off ona different track in the samesentence, I wanted to start this threadto show what can happenwhen 2 different sizedrabbits are forced into mating byiggnorence and curiosity.

What really aggravates me isthe fact that the personwho bred this particular litter was NOT a child ,was not a teenager butis a full grownadult in his 30's . im not sure whichis worse at this point.

Isis as i have namedher because of her color (light steel grey ) will begoing for a vet checkMonday to insure that she isnot infact previously bred ,which i suspect she has . This Doe'schance of birthing a normal litteris not something i want to takea chance on , where as i do not knowwhat she may have been bred to, and thefact she has NewZeland genes , which couldpossably grow her kits into verylarge babies she will be unableto birth .

Thank-you Gypsy, for the story and thelesson. The next time I see my vet, who Iadopted Pebbles from, I will ask her about the still bornPebbles had. I believe she was pregnant from thepet shop, and the vet rescued her.Theone baby was as big asPebbles and a c-section was performed. Italmost killed Pebbles. Pebbles a NetherlandDwarf, is now spayed and living a happy life with us.

Rainbows! :)

Thank you for posting this thread. Itwill hopefully make people think before they just throw two rabbitstogether just so they can have babies.

Your very welcome :

Altho next time i setout to do something like this iam going to make a rough draftand do it right , as i wentback and reread the thread i noticedhow badly i messed it up in places , imreally bad at half thoughtsand sentences i knew it was aproblem but didntrealize just how bad itwas till now. Thank You allfor listening to my ramblingsand museings and for allowingme to back up and tryand tell it the rightway .

A little update on the 2 new girls "

Isis we weighed today , andwhat a fighter geesh , she weighsas close as we cantell with out tranqulizers (for both of us ) is7 1/2 lbs

The N Z weiged in at 11 lbs ,by the time we gotsettled down with Isis ihad gotten to the point whereif i looked realy fast icould get the weight and getthe N Z off quicker ,Oh and hubby namedher Penelope.

I dont think theserabbits have had verymuch human contact theyboth are veryskittish and dont wantto be touched itsgoing to take a long time togain their trust , i thinki just may have my work cut outfor me with them.

Thanks , one of thesedays they will fnd a wayto put people like this out ofbuisness and there willbe no more needfor rescue places likemine and so many others.

I have been raising rabbits over twenty years andi have never seen them being born. Many rabbits with a full pedigreeshould not be bred due to the fact they just have too many defects.Inever make any money, anything i make goes back into the rabbits and ibabysit too pay expenses. Most shows charge $3 per rabbit.bluebird
