Hello,

I have a 3 year old mini rex named Lola. She has this gray gunk over her eye. This has happened before and it eventually went away on its own. I want to make sure that it will go away again. Is there something I can do to help her or should I take her to the vet? Here is a photo of her eye. It's hard to see it in detail but her eye is also red and leaking some sort of fluid. Thank you for any suggestions!

That looks like there are two cloudy spots on the eye? If it was just one circular spot, cataracts would have been a possibility. But if there are actually two cloudy spots and neither is just a bit of fluff stuck in the eye, the likely cause is a corneal ulcer, especially with discharge also coming from the eye. You could try flushing the eye using plain sterile saline eye drops (eg Natural Tears) to see if it's just clumps of fluff stuck in there. But if the saline doesn't flush away anything, it's likely to be a corneal ulcer, which would need immediate treatment with rabbit safe ophthalmic antibiotics.

Corneal ulcers can be very serious if not treated promptly with an appropriate rabbit safe antibiotic, as permanent damage to the eye can occur, which may then require surgical intervention. So I would strongly suggest contacting a knowledgeable rabbit vet right away, to get your rabbit on an antibiotic eye drop at a minimum. If it is in fact a corneal ulcer, it's at the stage that if the vet can't fit you in today or tomorrow, I'd ask to be seen as an emergency, and send a photo of the eye to the vet if necessary.
