I took my (what I thought was a boy) rabbit in to be Neutered. As it turns out, once she was under and they shaved her stomach and did the surgery, it was a spay not a neuter. That was the first shock. Then they said that I couldn't bring her homeuntil she pooped and she has been there since Tuesday morning. They said that they force fed her and still she didn't go to the bathroom. What does this mean, is this normal?? I have never had a rabbit before and don't know howcommon complications are of if this is even considered a complication.

Any words of advice??

Im surprised they are keeping her this long. In my opinion, she needs to be at home where she feels safe to recover. Bunnies are usually slow to eat after a spay. Usually if a rabbit hasnt eaten/pooped after about 24 hours you should be worried.

In my experience, bunnies want to be where they feel safe and comfortable, especially after surgery. I know my boys wouldnt eat at the vets. However, If they force fed her, she should be pooping by now.

Did you ask if theyve given her pain meds?

Aww, poor girl:(

I'm sorry I can't offer advice, but I agree it seems very strange:?

I can offer good vibes and pray for poopies though!:litterhealthy:

no...They have left for the night and will be in at 8am tomorow. I will call first thing in the morning, or better yet, will probably be there first thing in the morning to at least visit and see how she is doing. Been reading a loton the internet about complications and how it is kind of a delicate surgery. I really hope she is OK. I also read that if they are in a lot of pain they won't eat, or if they are really scared they won't eat...sometimes even to the point of starvation. I am also wondering if maybe they are feeding her different stuff than she is used to eating, or if she is just in pain and won't eat. I don't know. I almost wish I just had her here, but I am just scared I wouln't know what to do even if shewas here.

I really hope she comes home soon! I know a lot of vets around here insist that the rabbit stay over night after a spay (not for neuters though) and I have spent hours searching for not only a vet that does a lot of spays/neuters on rabbits but one that would let me take them home that night. It's my general opinion that I can get my rabbits to eat a lot sooner and are more willing to poop when they are in familiar surroundings that are not stressful like a vet clinic.

I would definitely go visit her and take something familiar for her as well. It might just be what she needs.

Is anyone there with the rabbits? If she is left alone that could be worse.

I really hope your baby is ok. I suppose there isn't even an emergency # you can call and have someone who is checking on the animals to return your call?

I definitely be there first thing in the morning. I hope all will be well when you see her.

I finally have my baby back home. I went to get her first thing this morning and she still wasn't eating and she was grunting (which means she is really mad) at everyonewho tried to feed her or care for her. Since I have had her home,She is eating really well. I went to get her some fresh carrot tops early this morning and she has really gobbled them up.She seems to be much more comfortable now that she is in her home with all of the familiar smells and sounds. I feel much better now. Thanks for all of the responses and words of encouragement while she was at the Vet. Now we just have to get used to the fact that our cute little boy is now aprecious little girl.

PS ... The vet asked me to bring her back in tomorrow so she could check the incision, but I really don't want totake her back out of her comfort zone. Any thoughts on that??

Its weird because I thought I remember you saying this vet was really educated on rabbits and had some of her own?

Im soo glad you went and got her! Bunnies need to feel safe after their surgery. I dont even like the thought of them staying one night at the vets office.

Its great that shes eating. Any poops yet? If not, you might try some banana or pumpkin (100% pure pumkin in a can). That will help.

Have you been able to look at the incision yourself? Ive never heard of a vet wanting to recheck it, but if theres no charge Id say go ahead.

This is a great tip I got from Naturestee- if you want to check the incision, have them in their cage and hold a treat up so they have to stand on their back legs. That way you can get a good look without having to flip them over. Just watch for any discharge or excessive swelling.

Keep us posted!

PS. Whats the bunny's name? Is it an ambiguous name (that can be boy or girl) or will you have to change it?

I'm so glad she's home now! I'm really surprised your vet insisted on her staying there. It's so stressful for a rabbit to stay long at the vet's. I don't see why you need to bring her back to have the incision checked either. My vet, who is very good with rabbits, just has me keep an eye on it and call him with any questions. The treat trick worked great with my three girls.

I hope she starts pooping soon! Keep us updated!

Yes, I got the name of the Vet from House Rabbit Society. She has 2 rabbits of her own and seemed to be pretty educated on them. I have a regular vet for our dog but wanted someone who had a lot of experience with rabbits specifically to care for him...her.

The vet said that she did poop but just a very little bit. She said it wasprobably because she couldn't get her to eat without force feeding her and she didn't want to keep doing that. Now that she is home and has eaten lots of carrot tops and some apple chunks maybe she will startpooping like sheneeds to. She is not really interested in her hay yet though. But It has only been a few hours since I have had herso maybe she will eat hay soon.

Have you tried holding pieces of hay for her? That was the only way all three of mine would eat hay for the first day or two. Everything's more special when Mommy's holding it.:)
