Thank you so much for all the support, I did come back on breifly last night but my internet is screwy and I couldn't stick around long enough to post anything.

At this stage the vet is unsure, she was a different vet to my usual one and while she seems kinder with bunnies, she doesn't know that much. She's taken some samples from both ears and having tests done which I find out about today.

She says probably ear infection due to E.cuniculi, as he's showing more signs of that now. Head is tilting, eyes are rolling as he tries to get his balance. Looks like one of his ear drums is perforated (spelling?) which she said will be incredibly painful.

As per usual I've been sent home with baytril and not much help from them :?.

I'm to take him back for x-rays if the tests don't show anything definitive.

She mentioned things like brain tumours and the EC spreading to the brain :(, I'm trying to find some reading about that.

:(I hope he does ok. Keep us posted.

Oh no, Sweetie...I was so BADLY hoping I was wrong...I'm so sorry...:(

Prayers for you both...as well as lots of love... :hearts:pray: as well as lots of :pet: for BunBun...

I'm here if you need a friend...

I will keep my fingers crossed for you. You have caught it quickly so hopefully it will clear up. I know my vet gave me panacur too as well as baytril when Dido had it.

Hi,

There is a lot of misinformation out there about E Cuniculi. Usually the first clinical signs of EC are a "lazy leg". It is usually the left rear that drags....at first it is rare, maybe only once every few days. It becomes more common as the disease matures. Another sign of EC is sudden and pronounced urinary incontenance and the urine will be quite concentrated and will be very smelly. That is the result of theprotozoan spores being shed in thekidneys....and this iswhen the disease can be easily spread. As things move along, the rabbit will start to stumble more often and then will go down on it's side. As the immune system starts to attack the invasion, there can be almost total recovery and it is very possible that a strong immune system can put the EC into remission. However, if the immune system can't control the protozoa, the paresis will return. The immune system steps up the attack at what it sees as the primary threat. It is a trade off as the immune system is so involved with the immediate threat of the protozoa, it allows an opportunity for the various bacterial infections to start all over the body (hence the term "opportunistic bacteria). The onlysure way to determine if EC is the problem is post mortem. There is a "titer" that checks for antibodies in the body. It leaves a lot open to discussion about it's findings. To get anything near a good lab....several titers should be performed over a period of several weeks. There are only a couple of labs here in the US capable of performing that particular analysis.

In our experience, if there has been no signs of paresis or urinary issues, I would treat assuming it is strictly vestibular. We have come to use a "cocktail" of drugs to treat ear infections. I am not a huge fan of Baytril standing on it's own and we never use it in rabbits as a first line drug. In the case of vestibular infections, I generally treat with two different families of antibiotics that work in different ways. I also tend to use Baytril Otic....it's a good ear drop that contains both enrofloxacin and silvadine. Recovery from an ear infection is sometime painfully slow. We treat this much more aggressively and still have been on treatments for as long as 8 months.

I found an excellent article written by one of the world's best rabbit doctors and this article pretty much validates what we have found in dealing with tilters. I would suggest that you print this article and have your vet review it. I have several others written by several other prominant doctors.

Ya know, I agree with Randy...if there was no paralysis going on with the back legs, or stinky urine, I think you may strictly be dealing with some sort of ear infection or problem.

You're awesome, Randy!! :D

:highfive:
