Baby BIRD?!?

My cat, wonderful thoughtful hunter that he is,has brought me a live baby bird. It has blood on it - I don'tthink that it's the baby's.. . If the mom is still around, it probablywon't accept the baby now that it smells like me.

So . . how do I take care of it?

I have a box (rejected nest-box) that I put hay and scraps of towelin. (No loose cotton lying around . .) I put thebaby in and covered it with another scrap, and right now it's in a warmroom.

How do I feed it? WHAT do I feed it? how warmshould it be? etc. etc. etc. . . any advise would beappreciated . .

depends on what kindof bord it is , that willdetermine what it eats , Im sorryto say that if itsbleeding chances of survival areslim the Shockwill kill it .

do you have any of hte sippertubes for birds laying around ,first thing you need to get into it isfluids do not forcebut gently guide. Keep it warm and stressfree as possable , need to knowwhat kind of bird to be able tohelp further .

I found a baby bird once and I called myvet. They told me to give it canned dog food. Thiswas about 10 years ago though. I would callavet. Good Luck

Thanks for the responses so far. I'm going to try giving it warm water from a bunny syringe.

This looks like a baby pidgeon, by any chance do youhave any baby food in thehouse like gerbersrice cereal ? if so mix itup to the cositency ofa medium thin paste and use aserynge to feed ityou will have to open its mouthand get the tube in there justfar enough to notchoke it ., it will most likelyfight you the first few momentsbut will redily accept it after, I have had to hand feedPidgeons before of allthe birds they are one of hteeasier ones ,

In the morning call theVet and have it seen, He can better guide you onwhat more you can do ,. ohbtw once you hand feed pidgeonsthey are your best friend for life, you will become theMommy bird lol howcool os that .

All I really know about are Game Birds(Pheasants, Chukar and Quail). I know when they're just a couple daysold they need the lights to be about 90 degrees, but after that theystart making their own and can handle it. I'd say that you need to keepit as warm as you can, but if it starts panting or moving less try notso hot.. lol. If you have like a shallow kitty-dish or even a paperplate for water that works best once they realize what it is, tryputting it's beak in it a couple times. Just make sure the poor thingcan't drown itself. As far as feeding.... I'm not really sure...probably go with what Gypsy says (she usually knows what she's talkingabout!)

He's very stubborn, doesn't want to drink anything and keeps trying topeck at me Hopefully he'll stop fighting, like you say . .

We don't have any baby food, but I will see about getting some. Thanks for the advice!

This is Robin's mom and I have to share a cute story.

Robin's cat really loves her a lot. He's made up his own namefor her "RaRa" that he calls when she's gone (like when she was atcollege).

In fact, he loves her so much that sometimes he tries to provide forher...by bringing her LIVE animals.....like baby mice and mamamice...and dropping them on her when she's first waking up in themorning.

I'm thinking that since he knew how excited we were about the babyrabbits that are "mine" (and Robin's too)....he wanted to make sure shehad a baby of her own.

With that said...would a paste of cream of wheat do for right now? Hubby has the car till 6 am....

Looks to me it may be a mourning dove, they areugly when young. They tend to nest in odd places sometimes,window sills etc. I think doves diets are basically seed andsome berries.

Peg "yes that will work ,anything on hte warm side thatseasily pushed down thetube , feel just under thebeak mid way between the brak and breastbone there will be alittle pouch there it should bejust firm if he has eaten inthe last 3 or 4 hours ,

see where the base ofher thumb is , it looks likeit has eaten recentlyand will be fine till morning ,Mourning dove Babies are not that color, Pidgeon Babies are , Iwouldnt worry right now aboutfeeding but try and getsome fluids into it , LOL in a day orso if itsirvives it will see you comeingand the beak will be wide openand squaking lol its so cute .

Well I had a bird that was much smaller and it'seyes weren't open but whenever we tapped on the box he would open itwide for his food. I wouldn't know how with a bigger bird. :?

I had to feed a dying chick a mixture of hisstarter feed and warm water. I placed my index and thumb finger gentlyon it's beak and carefully opened it's beak and put the syringe in

Thanks for the advice. She got hisbeak open and got a bit in him - she'll feed him a bit more in a fewminutes and then again every few hours...we don't want to overfeed himand hurt him.

you can feed him till the cropis full , the little sack justunder his beak itwill look like a lopsided lump, when the little sackgets almost flat you can go ahead andfeed him again , If your going toa Feed store you can pick upa small bag of pidgeon food , not thecrap they sell with the coloredbits in it either , it shouldbe a fine mash type grain,, grind it up in a coffee grinder to apowder consistency , add 1 tsp ofbaby cereal , and enough waterto make it pass thruthe tube , MotherPidgeons only feed babies 3 timesa day so be sure thecrop is full up each time , as Longas it made it thru the night it will mostlikely survive , phewthankfully he did . Now youboth have a friend for life , Release daywill b e hard BUT he wont gofar for the first 2 years , hewill remaine tame for that periodand then realize he isBird and find a Mate .He will come back and bring theMate with him , basically henever goes away lol before youknowit you may have 100pidgeons coming in for a visit.

Birds dont have a "sense" of smell......i founda baby robin in my back yard a few weeks ago....and it hung around myhouse for a while till one day i seen the mom and dad feedingit......but his eyes where open.....id say if his eyes are open idplace him back outside........my sound rotten but you have to letnature take its course!
