Accidentally Stepped on Bunny

Okay so I accidentally stepped on my bunny. His name is Duncan and he is 5 years old.
I accidentally stepped on my rabbits back because I did not see him hop under my feet. He Isn’t moving much. When he does he limps a little. He isn’t eating or drinking. And he won’t really let me pet him for long. When I pick him up he makes small breathing noises and when just sitting he breathes pretty heavy.
I don’t think I will be able to take him to a vet because my parents will think he is fine and won’t want to pay a vet fee. I don’t think Duncan has ever been to a vet either.
What can I do? I am really scared right now. He had also been making really loud chewing noises.

Last night and this morning kind of. I give him hay that last him all day and he usually eats his pellets but there is a little more than 1/4th of those left. Even if I tried to tell my parents my mom is busy with work and my stepdad won’t want to take me.

the last time he was sick-ish we didn’t take him to the vet because he was “fine” and I mean he was it was lucky. He was fine that time but I’m not sure he is this time??

It will be up to you to explain what happened and perhaps offer to pay (or pay them back) for any vet visit. Be clear to your parents that the rabbit is in pain (tooth grinding) and is not eating (a sure way to get GI stasis and make things worse). Please don't let this rabbit suffer.

I told my mom. She did vet school in high school on big and small animals. She checked on him and said he felt fine. She said he was probably just sore and needed some time.

Try possibly calling vets or rabbit shelters around, tell them your story, see if they can help you, at least with pain meds. If you are younger, offer to work there cleaning on weekends to pay them back to show you are serious and just don't want your rabbit in pain as your parents aren't helping and you(like i said im guessing are younger) can't afford it and don't want to see your rabbit suffer. Hopefully one will help you out. X-rays honestly cost them nothing, so hope you find a kind hearted vet that will do some and give you pain meds. Then take a bus, get a friend/family member with a car and go as fast as you can. If a rib or something is broken it can lead to bad outcomes.

Vet school isnt part of high school so her feeling him means nothing. He needs proper veterinary care asap. Call a friend, get a taxi, and help your pet.

This is why we advocate that anyone, child or adult, who gets a rabbit or any animal needs to be able to afford all care and emergency costs for that animal before bringing it home.

Take home to a vet as soon as you can. My dad accidentally stepped on my bun earlier this year. He “appeared” fine and ran around being mischievous but I noticed he was having trouble eating. We took him to an emergency vet and he had a broken jaw. If we hadn’t taken the initiative and taken him to the vet, he might not be with us now.

Duncan is much better today than he was yesterday. He is acting more normally now and is kinda eating. He is just a little nervous around me now but he is getting better!

Update:
Duncan is doing better he is acting a bit more normal and has started eating again. He will take treats from me now even though he is a bit nervous around me. His breathing has stayed the same kinda fast but I believe he is getting better! Thank you all so much for your help!!

Oh I’m so glad to hear that, he might be a little skittish as it would have frightened him when you stepped on him, in that case you’ll just have to build your bond back up!

It’s kinda sad because me and him had just gotten pretty close.

Rabbits are a prey species, they are designed to hide their pain and suffering. So not seeing signs of pain does NOT mean they are A-Okay!

Yes I agree with all of those statements but my parents will not take him to a vet. He has showed signs of recovery like hopping more normally and taking treats and lettuce. If he shows any signs of worsening I will have my grandma take him to the vet for I do not have money and cannot drive yet.

This is awful to read about. Please call a local vet and BEG for help. You are a kid and cant deal with this properly all alone. You are alone!!
Responsible pet owners dont guess about pet health. They trust their gut for things being wrong and get help. Im sure every vet has some cases they offer without cost or for barter in services. My 3 rabbits get a full vet checkup every year because we signed an agreement to do this when we adopted them. I remember the awful neglectful things my parents did to my pets as a kid and the pets all died. Now being age 64 I will never forget the sadness they caused me. Fight for your pets!

I find it VERY disturbing that you guys are all telling this young girl (or boy), to disobey her parents. Her mother has experience in the veterinary field, and was able to tell if Duncan was truly hurt (spinal injury, etc.). He is showing improvement, which is a GREAT sign. Do not come at this girl's parents because they can't afford to take Duncan to the vet right now. It will take time for him to rebuild trust, and recover from any bruising, so relax. I have had rabbits get underfoot and they always bounce back with for zest than before.
Do not put a young teen under pressure to disobey her parents.

You quoted way too many people on this. With possibly one exception, no one told them to disobey their parents. If you read carefully, the OP said a couple times that she had not even told her parents that her rabbit was injured. It wasn't until later that she finally told her mom and said her mom had "vet school in high school"- arguably questionable. Lack of affordability was never mentioned by the OP.
