On Friday, my 2 bonded Rabbits were attacked by the Family dog. The Male unfortunately died. The female who escaped without injury is convalescing. I’m absolutely devastated and feel so guilty. Their enclosure had a defect which I knew nothing about as it was brand new, they both managed to push on the under part of the housing area and escaped into the garden where the pet dog was. I was to late onto the scene.

My main concern now is the female, I feel so terrible for her as they were so in love. She is now in the shed which has been made all cosy for her and she is eating but she seems so sad. I don’t know if, I should wait a little longer to find her a new mate? Also she maybe pregnant as they had only just started to share a hutch and we were happy for them to mate....

If somebody has some advice I would be very grateful as the air is very heavy here, much sadness and shock and a tremendous amount of guilt.

Hi

I’m so so sorry you experienced this but unfortunately this does happen. You mustn’t feel guilty as it’s just in the dogs instinct. The exact same thing happened to us a few years ago with our dog and Guineas. Please try not to be hard on yourself ( or the dog!)

I’d personally find out whether the doe is pregnant or not first before even thinking about finding her a mate. It takes a lot of time and effort to bond bunnies and often takes a while. But I’d definitely think of introducing another rabbit eventually as single rabbits can get very lonely. She will find love again!!

Sending out lots of love to you xx
