    Frazzled after neutering

The gel around the eye is an ointment that is used during anethesia to keep the eyes from drying out. Don't sweat that. It sounds like he needs some pain meds.

    Nybody Tried HEALx for Abscesses?

Sounds like an elixir....if you have it, this product will cure it. A little like the "recipe" on The Waltons. I just don't see how one product can do many things so well. It's all about money. And I don't think I would spend my money on this particular product. I prefer known to be effective...

    Update on Popeye

Sounds like your vet is on top of things. I can offer only a couple of suggestions. Elevated liver values are often related to the stress of the trip to the vet. With the lasix, it is very important to maintain a proper diet. And the calcium levels are probably not so much dietary as other...

What to mix with antibiotics to get them in?!

Baytril isn't the best choice for pasteurella since most bacteria are becoming resistant to Baytril. If you have the tabs, there isn't much you can do to cover that taste (liver). You can try banana or a favorite type of baby food. Ask your vet if you can exchange the tabs for the injectable. If...

    Frazzled after neutering

No pain meds? That isn't professional at all. INSIST on pain meds. Metacam is the absolute minimum. I prefer Buprenex but this is a controlled drug....Tramadol is an acceptable alternative. My question to the vet....would he like to be neutered without pain meds?

    Frazzled after neutering

Umm...rabbits should never be fasted. Many vets will ask that pellets be removed the morning of the surgery but they should still have access to hay and water. I have had rabbits eating going into surgery. I would talk with the vet. This could be a staff education issue.....the "front...

    Hind leg paralysis

Most likely he is a bit drowsy both from the injury and the Tramadol....we use Tramadol quite a bit to sedate head and/or spinal injuries. As far as the Merck Manual and the other vet's published comments on using steroids....the general feeling in the veterinary community today is that steroids...

Pulling hair, but not a female

Actually a dietary change can correct MBD is it's NMBD. It just takes a long time....and that is hoping there is no bending in the bones like rickets. We have treated squirrels and opossums that were "rehabbed" (illegally)by well meaning but misinformed people that came is with such severe MBD...

    Straining to urininte

Umm....I think I would talk to your vets about dropping the Zantac and the Baytril. As I mentioned, Zantac changes the pH in the gut and you don't really want that. Since it appears you have arenal problem, I would look at something other than Baytril. The Loxicom is a NSAID...known as Metacam...

    Random Opinion Question

Couple of thoughts....in my non-professional opinion. First, motility drugs have never and will never be used on any of my rabbits. They are far too dangerous, again in my non-professional opinion. I feel the drugsare a "win-win" for the vet. If they work, the vet is a hero....if they tank, it's...

Pulling hair, but not a female

Make the food change gradually...over a period of a week or so. And since you have a horse, do you have any Safeguard? It's Fenbendazole.....a dewormer. Might be a good idea to deworm him since worms can absorb nutrients from the host. While you can pay for a fecal, I have found them to be...

Pulling hair, but not a female

Possibly could be related. I looked at the foods you are offering. I would suggest maybe going to a higher quality food. In this case, I would suggest Mazuri. It is a high end product made by Purina. Mazuri is a huge name in zoological world....not so much in the domestic world. But they offer...

Pulling hair, but not a female

Here is an article written on MBD in squirrels. Squirrels have a different type digestion system than rabbits but the causes of MBD are the same. http://www.squirrel-rehab.org/rehabinfo/mbd.html At the bottom of the page are some links that can show you what happens to baby neonates that...

Pulling hair, but not a female

I encourage you to research Vitamin D and it's relationship to MBD and overall health. Just keep in mind that it is much more complex than just giving Vitamin D. And vitamins are technically drugs so overdosing is possible. One of the presentations of MBD is swollen and/or painful joints which...

Pulling hair, but not a female

Contrary to popular belief....both oats and carrots are not exactly health food for rabbits. There is most likely an underlying problem here and it's probably nutritional. When you combine hair pullingwith "arthritis" and looking at his picture.....he doesn't look healthy and appears to be...

    How to clean ears

You can order a fantastic solution online (and many vets have it). It is made by a company called Virbac and is called Epi-Otic. For more difficult jobs, they have a much stronger product called Cerulytic. When you do ears, especially in rabbits, you don't want to use water or oils like mineral...

    Paralysis or broken back (RIP))

So sad and I'm sure the person responsible is devastated. A couple of years ago, this same thing happened to a couple of rabbits at the state fair here. The breeders were grooming them to show as they had done many times. It's tragic but it happens even to experienced handlers. As far as holding...

HELP! Eye infection after treatment for pasteurella

The dosing is correct (in fact it's almost the high end dosing....props to your doctor)....I normally go 14 days or 5 days past the presentations of the infection. I would talk with your vet about either continuing the Zithromax or doing a culture to identify the bacteria and treat accordingly...

    Straining to urininte

Umm....my first thought would be is your vet rabbit experienced? Why is your rabbit being given Zantac and Baytril? Zantac is a histamine 2 blocker. It reduces acid in the stomach. The beneficial bacteria that digests food in a hind gut fermenter digestive system requires an acidic environment...

HELP! Eye infection after treatment for pasteurella

Couple of things here. First, if there was not a culture performed, do not assume Pasteurella. At one time we could assume but no longer. I have never actually seen a blocked tear duct but a skilled vet can flush tear ducts without sedation in most cases. Azithromycin is the current drug of...
