Oh Pam, I feel so bad for you and Matthew. I can't imagine how hard it's going to be for a nine year old that can't do the things he wants for 6 months

I don't think that the prognosis is very good long term though. The bone holding the vertebrae together has actually fractured apart - this will be an issue for the rest of his life.
