I found the following Willow decorative ball from Pier 1, which is cheap, but I'm not sure by the details on the product whether it's finished or not. How would I know by looking at it?

Is willow ok for bunnies?

Has anyone bought these for their bunnies?

The willow balls that they usually sell for pets are not treated and that one has obviously been laquered a few times. Untreated willow balls will be light colored like this one. Personally, I'd go for one that isn't since they are pretty widely available and it would be definetly safer.

Actually, the Pier 1 ball is safe. It looks different because it has bark, while the other ball has the bark peeled off. I've seen it recommended many times on different bunny lists and forums, and I think someone may have actually contacted Pier 1 to make sure. My bunnies love them!

They have some good grass mats there, too!

ok, I thought besides being dark that they looked rather shiny in that picture which would make me think it's been treated.

Maybe now I'm gonna have to stop by Pier 1 too and pick up a willow ball :D

you might also want to try and do what I did today and go to a store like Hobbly Lobby. They have all sorts of unfinished wood projects (from large wooden buttons to large wood crates) that are real cheap and would be lots of fun for your buns.

wow! a buck fifty. I had no idea that they'd even have stuff that cheap at Pier 1. And the grass mats for $5 (for the small one) is pretty cool too.

So, the grass mats are ok to have around bunnies? They're ok for them to chew?

I think so. I bought a much smaller grass mat at petsmart. Also I've read another thread that it's perfectly ok for rabbits to chew on the grass in your lawn. Of course this is all as long as the grass is treated with chemicals or other types of toxins.

Also sounds like naturestee has heard that those grass mats come recommended by other bunny enthusiasts.

Oh yeah...lol...forgot about the grass-eating thread! Thanks!

The things to avoid with grass mats are stains and threads. But you can find thread-less, untreated grass mats. I had a really good one from Walmart and I wish I stocked up before the season changed. *Sigh* It was nice and soft, Mocha and Loki liked it, and Fey and Sprite absolutely loved it but ruined it really quickly. It was one of the first toys they had ever seen, but with their poor health at the time I had to consider it biohazard within a few days.:( Eww.

I also had matching 100% grass napkin rings, too. Those were great toys! I hope I can find them again come summer. Then I'm stocking up for sure!

It's interesting going to stores now and noticing everyday objects that just might make a fun rabbit toy.
