I dunno. I wonder why he'd be scratching so hard if it were just normal itchies. Cutting his nails may help. I guess if the baby oil hasn't done the trick it probably isn't mites.

I agree with Claire's above post, its not typical to itch until blood appears. It could be the nails were super sharp, but I would want to get a really good look inside the ear and see what is in there, it may also be a build up of wax or yeast that is not too visible. yeast in the ears is a very frequent problem in lops mainly, but all rabbits can get a yeast overgrowth in the ears. Yeast in the ears is incredibly itchy and can be treated with antifungal drops. The antifungal drops are very safe and side effect free. Another reason I would suspect yeast because it also messes up the pH on the skin and causes a dry texture and feel.

I would probably treat him with anti fungal drops if the itching continues and make sure there is no other potential infection. It could be that he is very sensitive to dust from hay or the atmosphere too.

My Prince had the beginning stages of ear mites, the vet was going to give him something to fight them but he wanted to be sure that they were ear mites. Well Prince's immune system is fighting them so there was no need to start treatment. Which actually saved me money. Yeah some rabbits can fight off ear mites if their immune system is real good and apparently Prince's immune system is really good. I was amazed, but I still watch him for any signs of more ear mites. So far so good!
Did his ears look like the pix I have posted above?:cry1:
No, but when the vet checked his ears, he saw that he had a possible ear mite inside the canal. Prince's ears don't even have signs of ear mites and it has been months!

Toby's ears are definitely improving. I think with shorter, not-so-sharp nails, he's getting better. Look, not nearly as red. The left ear looks good still. The back of the right ear is almost good as new. No new spots of dried blood.
