i'm just curious to know what other RO members use in their bun bun's littler tray?

i've always used a large cat litter tray, newspaper as lining and lots of hay. ludo likes to poop and eat at the same time, he's fantastic at multi-tasking. never had any problems with using hay and newspaper but it would be interesting to hear what other bunny owners use :)

I use caredfresh. It absorbs great. Alsoyou no when it is time to change it when it starts to smell. The on one side of the litter box i put hay.

yeah i've heard carefresh is brilliant :)

a lot of pet stores in NZ sellwood shavings for rabbits but iwouldn't use this as i've heard that pine and cedar shavings contain toxic chemicals called phenolsthat can lead to liver faliure if ingested by buns/pigs/mice/rats, etc. might not be as toxic as it sounds but i wouldn't want to risk it...

I use compressedwood pellets, and they are the best litter I have EVER had.. I never smell a thing! They are way cheaper than other rabbit litters as well.. I use the kind for horse stalls. They are totally safe as they aren't treated with the harsh chemicals. Then I just put a layer or two of newspaper so it doesn't bother my guys feet, and some hay :D.

I recommend it 100%!

those sound great, what's their brand name?

my bun must have magical scent-less poop and wee because his litter tray never smells. i do change it every morning so maybe that's why? or it could be because my entire room smells like hay from the huge hay bin lol.

I think it might differ with you being in New Zealand, but I'm pretty sure any feed store you go to will have a bag of them. I'll ask NZminilops, she'll probably know :D.

Have you got a Bunnings or Mitre 10 nearby? I am 99% sure you can get them from there girlzilla. Ask for wood fire pellets or something like that I think.

Oh and as Spring says you can get the kind meant for horse stalls at feed stores too, I forgot about that. Try looking up stock feeds in the yellow/white pages online, they generally carry that type of thing.

Like Spring, I use the compressed wood pellets. I buy it at the feed store for $3 per 40 pound bag. Each bag last about a month, and it's odour asortion is awesome.

I clean litter boxes every second day.

I put about a half inch of litter in the box with a big hand ful of hay. The hay gets topped up about three times a day.

Also, because the wood pellets are heat treated to form th pellets all the harmful phenols are burned off. So there is no risk of liver/kidney damage from using these pellets.

Same here!! Although we use straw instead of hay. :)

I use Yesterdays News, they have bags of it for small animals, but I buy the big bag that they say is meant for cats. It's really the exact same thing :pI think it's great, keeps the smell down and such. I just keep the litter tray next to the hay rack so my guy can chomp down some hay while he's in there.

Compacted wood pellets send me to the ER with asthma attacks so I use the recycled paper version (Yesterdays News). Works better than anything else i have tried. :)

i either use yesterdays news or carfresh. i never have a problem with smell because i change it everyday. i started using the carefresh lately becuase i started using the yesterdays news in the piggie cage and i am going through it like it is going out of style.

I use wood pellets. They're called Woody Pet, but there's lots of different brands. I'm not sure what might be available by you.

I've tried every product out there and the wood pellets win hands down. Absolutely the best for absorption and odor control....AND PRICE!!

Kiln dried aspen shavings can be used, as the drying process eliminates the aromatic oils that can be harmful to buns.

I use yesterday's news, which I also use in my rat cages (only they get a mix of carefresh and yesterday's news). I change the litter box every other day, and I put hay in it every time it's changed.

I use straw at the bottom, timothy hay in the middle, and I sprinkle carefresh bedding at the top and put a lot at the edge where Macey usually pees. The bedding helps so much.

It's wood pellets that I use. Just a thin layer goes along way. Cover it with a screen to keep bunny from digging in it, and you're good to go.
