Haha I know, I am just begining to learn how to figure out which breeda rabbit is, but I own Hollands thats the only way I knew it wasnt aHolland, it may have Holland backround though :D It looks to big to bea Holland, maybe French Lop?? But they face is very long for a French,Mini, or Holland.

The UK has more Lop breeds than we do in theUS. Our equivalent of the "Holland Lop" in the US is actuallythe Mini Lop in the UK.

If we knew the weight, we could venture a better guess. Hercolor in the US would be more common to Holland Lops (but you are notin the US so that doesn't help much).

Not all rabbits are good representatives of their breed. Somepurebreds don't look anything like the standard for their breed, conversely, some mixed breeds actually can fit a purebred standard verywell.

Pam,

How do you know so much about the breeds in different countries? I'vejust realize how much you compare/contrasts the different breeds and tome it is all very interesting. By the way, are your kids in4-H??

I study the UK standard and am also on a lot of rabbit boards withmembers from all over the world -- so I have to remember to thinkglobally :)

My daughter Steph, is in 4-H. Matthew (6) participates, but isn't old enough to be official.

I also know many people who have imported rabbits and have showed methe differences in their imports as compared to our strains.

I was a 4-H advisor in Ohio, but didn't have time to get involved as an advisor once we moved to Pennsylvania.

Bob Whitman's book "Domestic Rabbits & Their Histories --Breeds of the World", is an excellent publication if you are interestedin studying rabbit breeds throughout the world. It's 456pages and stuffed full of illustrations as well as colored photos.

Pam,

Thanks for the book recomendation, I will add that to my list. I alsowant to get "Rabbit Production"-the newer addition, and a book onNetherland Dwarf colors.

Steph should think about going to State Achievement days, it's awonderful event and a lot of fun. Venango County is still looking for athird team member, and different counties can team up if there aren'tenough from one.

Is that when they hold the rabbit/cavy bowl?

. . . Wow - just looked up the PAState Days on theinternet. We moved to PA a few years ago, so I wasn'tfamiliar with exactly what was involved in the State Days.

Last fall, I was asked to revamp the rabbit/cavy bowl questions (whichI have just finished after many months of work). Because I'vewritten many of the questions (150 new cavy Q's and approx. 300 newrabbit Q's), my kids are not eligible to compete in state days.

Although I can't make any of the questions public, I can tell you thatquestions were added on rabbit/cavy care, breeds, diseases, breeding, history and genetics.

Sources that contestants need to study are the ARBA Standard ofPerfection, ARBA Guidebook, and the 8th edition of RabbitProduction. Also be sure to study the newest standards (OtterHollands, BEW Mini Rex and Tan American Cavies).

Pam,

That is so Sweet! The old questions were getting repetitive... besides, that's basically what I've been studying for presentations and such! Iguess since we can't get your daughter to join us, we'll have to keeplooking. We placed 3rd last year with 12 teams (I think), Alexis placed10th and I placed 8th out of I think like 33 kids. So we were alrightwith that but think we should have done better. Maybe this year sincewe've been studying. State Achievement Days is a big Rabbit Youth thinghere in PA, practically everybody who's anybody goes. It's loads of funand thank you for the new questions (your study material is the same asthe old)

Kat

You'll have to let me know how it goes and what everyone thinks of the new questions :)

Pam

Pam,

I will. They'll probably be suprised though because the old questionswere all questions on the standard. It shouldn't be too hard though, because you study the other things also for the individual test mainly. Thanks again for the help.

Kat

I was surprised that the questions they had were primarily limited to the Standard :(

The sources they listed for me to use were the Standard, RabbitProduction, the ARBA rabbit guidebook and a cavy publication (which Idon't have). I felt that the ARBA guidebook covered the cavyinfo well enough though. I feel the questions arenowwell rounded rather than just based on the Standard, and Itried to gear the Standard questions to what would be used on theregistrar's and judges exams and attempted to use more questions withbreed comparisons. There are some true/false as well asmultiple choice.

Our Binkie is a cross lop.

In fact.......she's down right angry sometimes!

;)

Pam

That's a great way to mix it though. Because the sources are all thesame, but the harder questions used to be on the actual test we'd take.Everything on the cards was straight from the Standard, I like itbetter your way cuz now I have a chance! lol!
