Well I just had to put a plug in for Kleenmama's Hayloft since we just got the most amazing hay from them last week. Yes, its expensive and yes, shipping is outrageous but I have to say its worth it.

Ive been buying hay from a local farmer and its pretty good as far as hay goes (and only 5.00 a bale) but I noticed the stuff I have was starting to get dusty and the buns were eating less of it (its been in my garage for a month or so). So I decided I would treat them and order from Kleenmama.

Its insane how much hay they are eating now, I can barely keep their bins full! And Max always wakes me up for his breakfast (pellets) but now he's coming to get me when he is out of hay! Its like bunny crack. Its so good that Tumnus will go in his cage just to get it (and risk being caught). lol

Heres some pics of how green it is:

My old stuff first:

Seriously it smells so good and fresh Im tempted to eat it :biggrin2:

Wow, that hay looks awesome!! I feed my buns Nature's Cafe hay but had to buy some Kaytee hay once. The Nature's Cafe is so nice and green and the Kaytee stuff had lots of brown strands in it like your old stuff.

Haley, where do you suppose the Kleenmama hay is less likely to have mycotoxins in it than the hay from the big companies? Depending on how much shipping is to Alaska, I might consider ordering some... I only have 2 buns to feed, after all!

Well theyre located in Washington so it cant be too much more to ship to youin Alaskathan it is to me in Michigan.

Crystal, I edited it to include a pic of the Bluegrass as well. Its weird bc last time I ordered more Timothy and a little Bluegrass and the Bluegrass was way better...so this time I ordered the opposite- 35 lbs of Bluegrass and 5 lbs of Timothy and the Timothy is just amazing. ;)

Thanks, Haley! I wondered if it was bluegrass, cool! Thanks, hon! I might have to to order that. What do you store yours in, like a huge bin with a lid?

Haley, it isn't showing up on their web site that they ship to my zip code, so I e-mailed them. The hay isn't as expensive as I thought, here the cheapest I can get it for is $3.50 per pound! That's at the feed store and is the Nature's Cafe brand, the poor quality Kaytee hay is $7 a pound

How long do you suppose I could store the hay for? My buns go through about a pound of hay a week and the smallest amount she sells is 25 pounds. Maybe they'd eat more if they get this really good stuff though. I might see if any of the other bunny people I know here want to split it with me and I could donate a bunch to the animal shelter, too, the bunnies there don't always have hay :(

I had noticed this with my bunnies to,we don't have timothy here so i buy oat hay,and i was getting it from one feed store for such a long time, but they weren't like eating all of it they would leave a fair bit and i would have to throw that away and give them more, until a few months back icame acrossan even better feed store and their oat hay is just awesome,it even smells so much fresher and now the bunnies eat the whole lot of it,there is no throwing the bits that they won't eat away anymore,i mean i pay $16:95 a bale but it's so worth it....a happy bunny is a happy mummy ;)

You know, the darker, drier hay is better for them LOL!

But if they aren't eating it..... well..... why get it? That's my motto also. I just wanted to point out the fact that Oxbow and farmers have told me.

I've noticed that if I get good greener hay, mine CHOW it down. Which is awesome for their digestive tract also.

That's why I have been feeding some of the 3rd cut hay from the barn this year - it's grass hay and green like this good stuff.

When it smells so good - you can see them "light up" when you bring it to them.

and you can give them all they want!!!

Haley,

I just got some hay from Kleenmama's too - both the 2nd or 3rd cut Timothy and the Bluegrass. I was trying to get picky Basil to eat hay. All my bunsLOVE it! Penny will actually start munching on the bluegrass before eating her lettuce if I give her both at the same time!!

And it is beautiful compared to the stuff I get from the horse barn. I tried mixing in Kleenmama's with the horsebarn stuff and they pick out all the beautiful green Kleenmama hay.

Yes, it was expensive to ship it but I think it's worth it since Basil is eating hay now:)

All my pets love Kleenmama's, and when you do the math, it isn't so expensive. It works out to about $1/lb with the shipping included (the shipping usually doubles the price). I picked up 40 oz of Oxbow orchard grass at the pet store because I ran out of Kleenmama's this week and it worked out to over $4/lb! And although the guinea pigs don't seem to mind the change, my bunny Fable hasn't been eating much of it.

Good thing my new shipment of Kleenmama's timothy hay is coming tomorrow! I get pellets from them too for my pigs and they love them. Hooray for Kleenmama's!

I buy Kleenmama's as well. I ordered 35lbs of Bluegrass and 3rd cut Timothy. I love it and the bunnies love it. It's not dusty, green, smells amazing, and is VERY fresh.

It's "cheaper" and well worth it for me, and it seems like it is going to last a long time because Morgan and Marlin aren't massive hay eaters (though, have been eating more now that we have KM hay).

I find that the hay here in AZ at the feed stores and gross. They leave the bales outside in a huge pile with a tarp over it, so it gets sun damaged and is almost always not fully green, but more yellow. A 85lbs bale of hay is $25 (or so), but it's yellow and dusty.

Aww you guys are so lucky! Even the best hay I can find over here doesn't look nearly as nice as that!:(

I wish they shipped over here! :( I ordered Oxbow Oat hay, but about half of the bag was dust.... :grumpy:

If anyone from this side of the pond knows of a REALLY good online hay supplier, please let me know!

I buy Kleenmama's hay, and we love it!

It wasn't too expensive, and is SUCH good quality. It smells so nice and sweet, sometimes I wanna take a bite!

Sometimes I give them buns greens, pellets, and hay all at the same tim (if i'm in a rush trying to get somewhere) and they often choose the hay over the other food.

I get the third cut Timothy and Blugrass mix.

Has anyone ever tried hay?! I tried a tiny bit of a bit once lol.... It tastes like grass! Of course it was out of the bag, rather than from the buns' cage lol!

Erm......

:embarrassed:

Jen, have you tried Dust Free Hay? Never ordered from them myself (I'm not allowed to order hay on the internet) but they are supposed to be very good.

http://www.dustfreehay.co.uk/index.htm

I'm just giving the girls Excel Forage, it's all Ebony will eat. :? But then, I do pick them a few big handfuls of grass from the garden every day too. :)

Never tried hay, have tried Excel though. :baghead

BAH, I don't want to talk about you U.S. people and your good cheap hay!! I say it's cheap because I am paying more than that here.

LOL.

You would think because most of this country is farm land, that it would be easy to find good timothy hay sold in smaller quantities and good quality. But I guess because I live in such a large city, I am asking for too much.

I'm jealous of that lovely hay... I am stuck with Kaytee. I don't think they will let me bring Hay across the border. :(

Thanks Michaela! I had a look, it doesn't look as green as the stuff Hayley posted pics of, but I might give it a go, and see how they like it!

Ours wont eat Excel Forage, they push it off the shelf... they do love the Timothy Hay with Herbs though, that's Excel aswell... We usd to buy the Pets At Home Timothy, but that's been shocking quality recently!

How come you're not allowed to order online? This site http://www.equinecaninefeline.com/catalog/index.phphas really good mountain hay, with different kinds of herbs and stuff in, it's like the Excel Forage stuff but much fresher. Their green wheat hay also goes down really well...

At least I'm not the only one who has eaten hay though lol! :?

My parents think it's the most stupid thing they have ever heard to order hay of the Internet, :rollseyes, they hate online shopping completely. :grumpy:

I used to buy the Pets at Home stuff too but it was horrible. :? Good for bedding for Ebony though. :)

Apparently the hay from DFH is very fresh and green when bought, I agree it doesn't look so good in the pictures though. Again, I can't speak from personal experince, just what I've heard. :)

Might try the Excel Herbage next then too. :D

Doh! That's not fair... If you have a solo card or something, order it without telling them lol! ;)It seems silly when most stuff nowadays you can find MUCH cheaper online...

Oh that's good, that it's greener when you get it, I suppose it can't hurt to give it a try then, thanks! :D

Bo B Bunny said that the darker, drier hay is healthier for bunnies, why is that? I would think that lovely fresh and green hay would be better... Also, I got a reply from Linda and she said that they do ship to Alaska, woohoo! We're just working out how much it would cost. And she assured me that it did not rain at all when the hay was baled and and it's all kept in a nice dry barn, so there's a lower chance of mycotoxins in it.
