hello, so i had my bunny scheduled to get spayed march 25 which is exactly when she turns 7 months. the vet just called me to say that they're closing except for emergencies and I should just call back in a few weeks to reschedule. I had to wait almost 2 months for this appointment in the first place and I feel like by the time I can finally get this done she'll be almost a year old.

Is she gonna get cancer if I end up having to wait til she's 9 months old? is there anything I can do?

don’t worry I got my bun spayed around 8 months almost 9 she’s still young. Did they say when they will open back up?

She shouldn't get cancer because she is still so young. Go ahead and reschedule so you can get in quickly.

no they just told me to "call back in the next few weeks" im so stressed

It is okay. I would call back next week and ask if they know when they will be able to get you in. If they say that they don't know, give them your number and ask them to call you when they know. If they don't call you after a week, call them back and ask again. Do this same thing until they let you book an appointment.

Your bun will be okay but I understand why you are stressed I was stressed in trying to get my bun spay appointment since they had no opening. I hope she will get spayed soon though so you won’t have to worry. Are all vets closed where your at?

yeah I'm just so stressed because I thought I was barely in time doing it now at 7 mos but now that's not gonna happen. like i could end up having to do this at 9 months....

She won’t have cancer, you can wait until later. Breeders often breed the doe around 1 year old. It’s just the risk get higher when they get over 2 years and will increase for every years that goes.

So don’t stress over it, you are planning to fix her this year :)

When she gets spayed they will remove her uterus, so no cancer because it won't be there any longer. It's usually not a problem till they hit two or three years, so you have time. Hugs. I'm having to delay having my bunny fixed as well.

thank you for this post. I'm just freaked out bc vet said she'd be ok waiting til 7 months and now im like ok so what about 9 or 10 months... Every pet owner feels this I get it but like to me this is an emergency and it's so frustrating that there's nothing I can do

No. That cancer thing got used to promote spaying and neutering by activists, and get's repeated and blown out of proportion by well meaning people who read something somewhere. In a span of about 2 years it went from 50% at 5 years to 80% if not spayed at one, and that's just wrong.

It's not without a kernel of truth though, but my own guess is more like 30% with abnormalties in their lifetime, which is still a very good reason to spay, apart from others.

That activism thing is something unique on english boards, started in the US, mainly for cats and dogs. During the last decade it actually reduced the number of pets in shelters significantly, so Yeah, great, but that fearmongering on the internet got somewhat out of hand.

I agree, i got one of my girls from a breeder when she was 4, she has never had cancer and is happy and healthy! Your girl will be just fine;)

You know, that doesn't tell anything about other rabbits, or statistical chances, like, smoking isn't a healthy thing to do just because some smokers live very long ;)

True, never looked at it that way... I guess I'm just lucky. Thanks for the new point of view! :);)
