use of antibiotics in rabbits

Hi everyone!
i wonder whether the use of oral antibiotics affects the rabbits' intestinal flora and motility; after a small traumatic accident, my bunny was prescribed an oral enrofloxacine for 7 days.. does anyone have experience in the use of antibiotics in rabbits?

Some oral antibiotics can upset the microbial balance in the GI tract, some rabbits might be more sensitive to a particular antibiotic than others, some antibiotics should never be used orally and only by injection like with penicillin or antibiotic induced enterotoxemia can occur. Enrofloxacin is one of the most commonly used oral antibiotics in rabbits, as it's considered the least likely to upset their gut flora, and is usually well tolerated(not taste wise though, most rabbits hate the taste). It's not always the most effective, especially if dosed too low at twice a day dosing, but it sometimes can be effective, depending on the bacteria and severity.

Though if your rabbit actually has an infection that is being treated, it's doubtful 7 days will be a long enough course. Bacterial infections in rabbits can be quite difficult to completely clear up, and if the antibiotic is stopped too soon then the infection will reemerge more resistant to that antibiotics future use. It's not uncommon for rabbits to need to be on a course of antibiotics for 4-6 weeks or longer. If the antibiotic is just being given preventatively then 7 days is probably fine.
