Emma got out of her pen tonight. She got into his pen (she had to get through two pens to get to him). We found them together, thought nothing of it and separated them. Later on, I found a chunk of fuzz on the ground and it had something scabby attached to it. I looked through his fur and found this.

Now what?

Please don't yell or judge me. I had them separate and I was so careful, but accidents happen. :( Please help me.

:cry2

I have never had to treat a bunny wound. Toby has never had an injury like this. I have no idea what to do. :(

Do you have any Betadine? That's the best for bites.

Or you can clean it with a triple antibiotic salve or Neosporin, or if nothing else, a bit of peroxide but only around the edges, that stuff stings and it's hard on the tissue.

The vet may want to stitch it, but personally I find that as long as you can keep it from getting infected, they do heal quickly on their own.

But if you've got the funds and want to play it safe, get some stitches and a systemic antibiotic just in case.

Check for other bites on both. Usually the problem with abscesses is having them develop from unseen bites. The ones you know about are easy to treat.

And these things happen. Don't worry and don't blame yourself. Rabbits will be rabbits.

Thank you for the quick replies. I will be putting some triple antibiotic ointment (generic Neosporin) on it tonight. I emailed my normal vet and hope they get to it ASAP in the morning. I will be calling them when I get home from work in the afternoon.

Aww, no worries!
I had a similar thing happen to me that ended up in the same situation, so don't beat yourself up about it. Bunny fights can be nasty, especially when someone decides to have a 'meeting' with no humans knowing!

When it happened to Georgie, I brought him in and the vet recommended stitching it up, but he would of had to be put under and the skin around trimmed before closing up. He also said that I could treat it as an open wound, which I decided to do because I didn't feel comfortable putting him under the stress of anesthesia. With baytril just as precautionary, and polysporin, it healed completely in a matter of weeks.

Here are some pictures just as a comparison after it happened and thenduring healing just as a guideline.. I'll have to look back on my thread to see the exact dates. Edit- So the first picture was on the 22 of September, then the second was the 26 of September, so they do start healing nicely quickly.

and for good measure..

:hug2:

Accidents happen - we all know that. And as you said - she had to get through TWO pens to get to him...

Let us know what your vet says....

How can we judge you?? You take great care of your buns. You didn't let the bite occur, so it's not your fault. Don't blame your self. :bunnyhug:

Stuff happens. I've been woken up in the middle of the night with bunnies fighting. Both times one of the buns decided to make a call on their neighbor. The neighbor wasn't happy to say the least. I've had bunnies jump out their pens when other buns are out. Goobie got a nice bite on the buns from Smitten for the trouble. She needed a vet visit for that. No harm, no foul.

Please don't blame yourself! Bunnies can be mischievious and that is never your fault. Your bunnies sound like they are very well taken care of. Please keep us posted on how Toby is doing, please!

Reminds me of a degloving injury, k.

Here's a photo link after typing in degloving on google.com...

Eastern cottontails come into the Wildlife Center with these injuries.
A lagomorph's skin has the ability to tear away. I forgot to mention this earlier...

Good notes ^above^ on how to pre-treat until Toby's rabbit-savvy DVM will see the wound and/or offer advice on follow-up care for infection-free healing.

You're an excellent mom to be observant and concerned!

Things happen. Bunnies are crafty little nuts.

Thank you, everyone, for being so supportive and helpful. I didn't mean to come off as rude before, but I have had experiences in the past of people on forums (not here) that have gotten snippy about things like this.

I just wanted to say, thank you. It really means a lot to me.

Poor baby :( I hope it heals easily. You've all had a rough go about this haven't you? :(
Oh, yeah! We wound up in the emergency vet for his gut problems two weeks ago, Saturday night. This was on a Sunday night. 15 days apart... Always after pay-day Friday. :grumpy:

He is doing OK. I checked on him twice last night. He was being his normal self, sitting on his little green stool and surveying his kingdom at night. I checked him out this morning and his wound looked dry and crusty (like scabbing). The only thing I can compare it to is the kind of yellow-ish (healthy yellow, not infection yellow) like a scab that you would get from scraping your knee or leg (road-rash).

He's being a little trooper.

My mum is coming over today (at 10:00AM) to watch him while I am at work. She is making him a vet appointment today (well, trying to). She will probably come with me if we get one today. Ugh. I'm happy she will be coming over, but I'm not happy with the situation with the bunnies. :(

I'm off to work. Thank you again, everyone!

Itdoes sounds like the wound is healing nicely.

What a horrible weekend you had..
This stuff happens to all of us at one time or another .
You;re a great bunny mom!

Right now Frida has a bite wound right next to her eye from an unsuccessful quad bonding attempt. Things happen and sometimes you just can't get them apart fast enough. How did it go at the vet today? You've had some good advice and the vet may want to sew it up, but if not, keep up with the betadine and/or neosporin.

Well, we're back from the vet. Toby needed stitches (three) and will have to return for a follow-up in two weeks. He will be on Baytril for two weeks (twice a day) and gets Metacam at night for the next three days. I got the bunny butt when I got home. :(

I ran into Julie again at the vet. :) She was able to say hi to Toby and see how he was doing.

Wow 3 stitches but now he'll be fine...
imagine running into Julie again; I know that she's been really busy recently and one of hers had surgery recenetly

Poor little guy. No judging from me, I had far worse during a quad bonding attempt like Tonyshuman's. I'm sure he'll heal up just fine.

So do the vets recognize your voice on the phone yet? Mine certainly do. :biggrin2:... :rollseyes
