I watched Season 1 and 2 in something like a 4 day marathon! It's very interesting... I've also read "The Other Boleyn Girl" which the movie last year was based on... all around the same issues and same era.

The Showtime series is quite well done. I know Season 3 ended with only 8 episodes. Will catch it on DVD since I don't have Showtime, but I'm excited :) Anyone else watch it?

daughter watches it, and i've caught some of the episodes. not watching this new series tho' - they've invented a mistress for henry - like that was necessary! sorry but i get so miffed when they have to invent characters:grumpy: the courts of the tudors were interesting enough without having to make up people:grumpy:

that said, it makes a change to see henry as the dynamic, young king and not the typical bloated despot:biggrin2:

have also read the other boleyn girl - enjoyed it as mary is often sidelined.

I watch it.. as a loyal Tudorist ,it's actually pretty disgusting..

But being a rennie and love costumes and such.. it's awesome.. just as long as you watch it for what it is.. entertainment.. not an accurate portrayal of history.

Howver.. there was one Episode.. I think it was season 1..where King Henry looked like he was standing there in pain.. with a servant standing there..

Needless to say.. it lit the Tudor groups up with disgust..

I haven't been watching the programme, but the 'mistresses' you described are probably real. I don't know if in the programme she is named, but its true Henry had an illegitimate son called Henry FitzRoy. He was a Duke of somewhere I think, so it may not be an 'invented' character. And chances are he probably had loads of unacknowledged mistresses and illegitimate children, as did most royals in those days.

Henry Fitzroy was the 1st Duke of Richmond and Somerset. His mother Was Elizabeth Blount. In life he lived well until he was 20 or 21, enjoying going on hunts and attending court with his father. In the series..he died of the sweats at about age 2 or 3.

Also in the series..Henry's sister, who is actually named Mary Tudor, is called Margaret Tudor, and her exploits are actually an amalgam of several historical figures.

Cardinal Wolsey..fell ill and died on his way to London,in Leicester actually, while being called to court by Henry, to answer charges of treason, not in captivity, and by his own hand my slicing his throat. Truly a disgusting end for such a great man.

Seem like they really dramatized it.

Re: Wolsey, I think what the show tried to create was a "truth" to how he died and then Henry told I think it was Cromwell that no one must know that Wolsey took his own life, hence history has handed down that he died enroute. Interesting twist in the name of drama.

She wasn't invented she just never did what they portray her to do.

in the latest series they invent 'lady ursula missleden'. cant see why when there were enough documented mistresses to go round! i can put up with all the wives looking beautiful with perfect teeth but why invent someone. in the first series the makers admitted merging henry's sister with another character:? that said i thought ann boleyn's last days were very well done:D

Agreed - I think Natalie Dormer (I think that's her name) did Anne Boleyn's days in the Tower with dignity.

Hey hey hey, I haven't watched Season 3 yet :)

I love that show! My mum bought the DVD's and stores them here. I've watched seasons 1 & 2. I don't like how they messed with history, either (Henry Fitzroy comes to mind). They did follow the storyline-ish, though. Good enough for me! :D
