To add to the yams versus sweet potato thing. As far as I'm aware, yams and sweet potatoes as we know them in the United States are the exact same thing. Real yams are arm length tubers that grow in the Andes, Africa and Asia and are very hard to find here. So unless your store is carrying three foot long things, what you're eating is sweet potatoes. The cans of sweet potatoes I bought yesterday (I'm going to make Stephiemarie's sweet potato recipe!) actually say both sweet potato and yam on the can. I think calling them sweet potatoes versus yams is just a regional thing.

Oh and I found a web site that talks more about it:

The more you know!:rainbow:

I have a Thanksgiving confession:

I hate pumpkin pie.
i also don't like pumpkin pie. that's why i took over the pie-making job!!

i make sure to have chocolate pecan and apple pies--no pumpkin!

My boyfriend doesn't think he likes pumpkin pie (he's only ever had the grocery store pumpkin pies, which I don't like either), so I'm making a pumpkin cream pie. It has only a cup of pumpkin, plus vanilla pudding mix, milk, some spices and Cool Whip in a graham cracker crust. Sounds like it would appeal to him more. If he doesn't like it, we'll probably be having Thanksgiving Lemon Meringue Pie or Thanksgiving Peanut Butter Pie next year :biggrin2:

I somehow got invited to the mother's house (yes the one that kicked me out for the upteenth time) and I'm dragging the boyfriend along because his mom is in Nevada for the winter. Going to be quite interesting. She usually goes all out with the stereotypical Thanksgiving dinner.

My mom, grandma and I will be heading down to see my Aunt, Uncle, & cousins who live south of San Diego. First we'll be stopping by UCSD to pick up my brother. My aunt always makes a great meal and this is usually the one time a year I get to see my cousins and their families, so I always look forward to Thanksgiving.

green beans with crunchy onions sprinkled through-out (or something like that)
Ohhhhhhh...... green bean casserole - I love, I LOVE green bean casserole.

Anyone see 'In the Land of Women'? The part where the little girl says, "I love - I LOVE Orange Julius" just cracks me up. Every time I say I love something now, I think of her saying that.

Sorry, I ramble sometimes.

Sounds like everyone's going to have a nice Thursday! :D

I can't wait until ours. We did some of our shopping tonight for our food for Thursday. We have a nasty habit of doing most of our holiday shopping last-minute (it's the way Danny and his mom did it all his life, hehe). But...this year I'm putting my foot down at least on Christmas shopping. We bought our first Christmas presents the other day for Emily. :biggrin2:

How is everyone else's Christmas shopping going?

LOL...I wanna get a JUMP on it this year!

My husband, all his life together with his mom, is used to doing all his Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve...which is something I've had to put up with for the past three years...NOT THIS YEAR!! LOL!!

:p It's fun to tell my little brothers that. They have such horrified looks on their faces. Especially cause they really can't tell if I'm joking or not.

LOL!!

I told a friend of mine that we were going to get a Flemish Giant when we moved, and showed him BlueGiants' avatar to show him about how big the bun will get...he literally looked like this:

He said, "Holy CRAP! You're not gonna have a bunny...you're gonna have a DOG!"

HEHE!!

I'm not going to tell my other friends...I want to see that horrified look when the bun comes bounding up to them the first D&D night after we get him or her! LOL!!

"Oh my gosh!! What the heck is THAT?!?!"

ROFLOL...I can just picture it...brings me loads of laughter, too! :D

I love that your little brothers are horrified that they're not getting presents, HEHE!! How old are they?
