Sweet Pea is my best friends 3 yr old spayed female rabbit. Linda (my friend doesn't use a computer) so This post isto help her help Sweet Pea who just had surgery Fri to remove an abscess on her jaw.The vet also wantedtosee what else is going on in her mouth.
They live in Ill and the vet works with wildlife rehab and i think is knowledgeable.
This is what the vet found....a group of badmolars lower right side (loose but not loose enough to pull safely). The abscess is from one of the teeth. and had started to grow into the jawbone . The vet attempted to dig outthe abscess but was frustrated because he wasn't sure if he could reach all of it. He implanted antibiotics beads, gave Linda pain medication and sent them home.
This is really the beginning of abscesses for Sweet Pea. he dug it out once before but it returned quickly. The first time he only gave them baytril (which I find odd)

I know about opening abscesses and cleansing them daily ,I know about bicillin injections what I don't know is the sequence in which a good vet treats an abscess. I feel that without removing the teeth (he was afraid of breaking her jaw) that the antibiotic beads seem like conservative treatment. Could someone with a rabbit with problems similar to Sweet pea let me know the sequence in which the treatments were implemented. ex. should Sweet pea be on bicillin right away?

I guess that it shows tharI really tend to doubt vets.

I think it sounds like he's doing everything right. They usually try to remove as much of the abscess as possible, then implant the beads. I know people who have used both at once justt o really hit it hard (both beads and bicillin). But I dont know if its necessary.

I hope she beats these abscesses. They really are a nightmare, especially in the mouth.

Thanks..Haley I really didn't know if he was doing it right.
What I think is going to be a problem is that he can't take the tooth out until it loosens up and if the tooth is bad it seems like it couldn'tresolve quickly and the tooth is the cause of the abscess. maureen

Hi Maureen. Our bunny Fiver had treatment for a similar problem. He had a tooth abscess but my vet was able to remove the offending tooth, plus another one that was on such an awkward angle. Fiver then developed another abscess. If its any help, here is Fivers threadhttp://rabbitsonline.net/view_topic.php?id=18275&forum_id=16&page=1

All the best for Sweet Pea, abscesses really are such a worry.

I guess I didnt read this right the first time.I wonder why he wouldnt take the tooth out? If he's going in surgically under anesthesia, I wouldnt think it mattered if it was "loose" or not.Although maybe he's trying to save it if thats possible.

Maybe she should ask about Pen G injections as well. Im learning the hard way that sometimes you have to force your vets hand. These abscesses are such a pain.
