Hi All

Last Thursday Casper showed beginning signs of head tilt. This lasted for one night (he had me worried sick), he acts a 100% normal now. He is on Baytril and Panacur. The Panacur since it is liquid I just put in and around his mouth and he cleans it all off. The Baytril I have been crushing and putting it in bananas & watermelon. It worked at first, now he is getting too smart forthat. So does anyone have any suggestion on how I can get him to take his Baytril?

Thanks,

Carrie & Casper

I knew I would have a problem with Binkie taking pills....even if they were crushed up and mixed. I asked the vetif she could give us liquidBaytril. She gave us unflavored and we mixed it with banana baby food. I still had to syringe it, but she seemed to like it once I got the flavoring strong enough to cover the taste.

My sammy is on the same medication and i used apple and mash it up then put the medi on that (seperately). What did the vet say had caused your bun's head tilt. I was told it was an innder ear infection and then they said it was a parasite in the brain, she has been on this meication for a while now, it worked to start with but she relapsed and no it is not working as well, going to visit a specailist to get anotheropinion.

Hope your bun gets better soon - its so worrying to see our pets go through this.

I had to give Raph baby aspirin a few times in pill form, and knew I wouldn't be able to get him to take it on its own, so I would take a couple of craisins and squish them together with the pill inside, and he downed it like there was no tomorrow. If the pills aren't too big and if your bunny likes craisins, you could try cutting them in two and giving it a try...

Definately ask your vet for liquid Baytril. My vet gives apple flavored liquid Baytril to rabbits. It's so much easier and it doesn't taste to bad. An emergency vet once prescired banana flavored liquid Baytril also, but the rabbit hated banana so I hid the meds in canned pumpkin, which she ate willingly. Or try dissolving the tablet in a bit of water or Pedialyte.

It's good to hear that his tilt is gone already. Is Casper eating normally?

Cazarty- Head tilt is usually caused by either an ear infection or a parasite of the nervous system called E. cuniculi. Since many rabbits test positive for E. cuniculi whether or not the parasite is actually causing any problems, many vets treat for both causes at the same time. This is what StlCardinals' vet is doing. What is your rabbit currently being treated with? And if he's only being treated for one type of cause, maybe he should be treated for both?

Apple and Banana flavored Baytril..Im jealous! My vet gives Max this gross liver flavored Baytril (probably flavored for cats and dogs). And poor Max hates it, no matter what I mix in it. I think its in a grape suspension, but that doesnt cover up the liver flavor.

Good luck giving the meds, Ive luckily only had to give liquid, pills would not be fun.

Our vet didn't have any appropriate flavor for my bunnie.
I actually requested that my vet give us the unflavored Baytril. The only flavoring she had available at that time was cherry or malt(I think?). Since "Cherry tree (bark, twig, leaves, pits) " appears on some of the safe lists, she preferred we didn't use it in any form. I don't think the malt flavor would have gone over very well either.
Plain Baytril tastes really bad (and smells bad, too). I mixed it with banana baby food...I think I ended up with 3 parts baby food to one part Baytril.

O/T: I remember the time she gave us fish flavored Laxatone by mistake. Oh my!!!....the looks I got from the buns:lipsrsealed.
