Hi all (I'm new). We have an 7.5 week old lopbunny (not sure if she is a Holland or a mini) named Mabel. Poor Ms.Mabel has been getting poops stuck to her butt almost daily. From whatI've read these seem to be cecal poop? I realize that the cecal poop isnormal, but is it normal for it to get stuck to her bottom? She doesn'tget any treats at all. She is on Purina Rabbit Chow (free choice) andTimothy Hay (also free choice). I clean her cage out at least daily ifnot twice daily. Her attitude appears to be good and she appears to becomfortable- she flops out in our cage to rest, and leaps around thehouse when we get her out. I'm a bit weary of cleaning herbottom...what should we do? Is this okay? :?

Is she eating her hay? She shouldproably be on alfalfa hay until she is about 6 months old (orolder). I had that same problem when I got my buns.My male had a real messy bottom. I gave him a bath.Since then, my vet told me not to fully submerge them inwater. She says if a rabbit needs their bottom cleaned toeither just submerge their bottom and back legs in lukewarm water anduse a rag to wipe off the mess. She says to never use humanshampoo, you can find 'Critter Shampoo' at PetCo or PetsMart, you canlather up their bottom with that (use sparingly). Or you canget some rabbit pet wipes to wipe up the mess. If the mess isso bad you can't really wash it out, you might need to clip the furthat is soiled.

Does your new bun get veggies? Do tell all!

Hugs! Shorty, Star & Krick

its called sticky bottom. Sometimescaused by not eating enough greens. Probably best to have atrip to the vet and get some dietary advice.

The same thing happened to Jellybean years ago.I cut out her pellets completely for a few days and only gave her hayand greens. The problem went away (as well as the extra weight she had)and I re-introduced the pellets a few days later. I still continue togive my buns lots of hay and greens and only limited pellets.:)

We go through the same thing with Peanut. So far as we can tell, the problem is that she just doesn't clean her butt :?

Her diet is fine, her poops are fine, but she still gets the occasionalpoo stuck to her tail. She also gets matts on her belly and bottom, those are almost worse to deal with than the "poopy butt". For whateverreason, perhaps it is because of how thick her fur is, she never cleansher own bottom.
So we get stuck with the chore...:foreheadsmack:
