hi all

just wondering if anyone know what might be the matter with stew's eyes i noticed today that he had a little bit of white gunk coming from both his eye and that he has been scratching at them i was just wondering i fit might be caused by a bit of his shavings that he has got in his eye which has made it sore or weather it is something else i phoned the vet and they don't have any appointments free this week so said just keep it clean and if it gets any worse ie: that he can't open his eye then to phone them back

any ideas on what i could be and is it serious

many thanks and best wishes

trudi

Has Stew been sneezing? Dusty hay/bedding can cause an allergic reaction - the discharge will normally be clear and from both eyes.May also happen if you are using a different kind of bedding than normal. Could be conjunctivitis but this is normally in one eye and there would be inflammation. I have heard of a tear duct infection - this would be a thick white discharge and can be from both eyes - has Stew got discoloured fur on the inside of his front paws?

Check out the eye section inhttp://www.alphavet.co.uk/advice/rabbits.html

I would try first switching him to a less dusty bedding to see if that helps. Im not familiar with products in the UK,but we have something here called Yesterdays News (pellets made from recycled newspaper) that works great for cutting down on dust.

Also, try shaking out his hay and pellets if they are dusty at all.

Oh, and is he eating normally?

thanks for that will try that with his hay and also will change his bedding from shavings to paper and see if that helps

and yes he is eating and drinking fine

Hi Trudi,

If it's just a little bit, it might be normal.
I have a few buns that get "gookies" in the corner of their eyes. Sometimes it's soft...other times it gets a bit dried out.

If it's a large amount of discharge it could be a quite a few things.

What color is it?
Is the eye inflammed at all...or by the tear duct?
Is the fur around the eye wet?
