I am not sure where you are located, but HouseRabbit Society has many branches. Your local one could help you getstarted. Also, specifically the Marin, CA. chapter is a one woman show. Her name is Marcy, and she rescues bunnies from the SF. Animal Care andControl in California. She would be happy I am sure to speak with you.I am sure you could google her. She has a website. She is veryknowledgable...and passionate. Good luck!

I'm in Australia, and I must say to you Goodluck!
i think it's a great idea someone wanting to help homeless bunnies, I'm slowly getting a name as the bunnylady in my area LOL :p

Also, make sure you check your state (orprovincial)laws, to see how many rabbits you're allowed tohave at one time. I seem to remember reading a story about a women whowas doing this and had major trouble with her state.

However, I think it's wonderful what you want to do! Good luck with starting this out.

thank you so much. ive been trying toresearch more on the internet as to where to begin . ive seenthere are non profit lisence that you need to apply for if your askingpublicly for donations or to do fund raisers. but i stillhavent found where i need to go to do this. ive emailed the houserabbit society and humane society. no word back yet but evenif i cant do rescue i would love to be a foster mom. at leastgive the rabbits a good start in finding a new mom and dad :)i have one lop rabbit i will be picking up today and a mini rex that iwill be picking up on sunday. all had contacted me on howthey got these bunnies for little children who no longer wanted them orhow they didnt show interest in them anymore. its so sad. imust say i have 2 young boys myself ages 5 and 3 who show thebiggest interest in animals. they must get that from me lol igrew up with having all kinds of animals in the household.from fish to a horse. they help me dailywith feeding watering play time brushing and dont complain once aboutit. the first thing my 3 yr old asks every morning is wheresmarshmallow (our bunny) so we head outside to herhutch so that he can touch her and help me feedher. the reason i want to do rescue is we have thetime and patients to have the bunnies here. i personaly thinkit would be very rewarding to us all knowing that we did what we couldto help love care and place a bunny with a new and foreverhome! i wonder at times if i hadnt gotten threeunwanted bunnies what would of happened to them? iknow some shelters will take rabbits but i also know alot of them willbe released or put down. ive even heard horror stories from people ofhow they have just killed and ate there rabbits!! :shock:thanx for all the input guys any info helps! wishme luck!

Hi Hon , First thing you wantto do is get signed up withyour Local ASPCA, Shelters , Breedersetc. Get signed up as A foster Homefor Rabbits ,

ONE! thing you want to be VRY preparedfor is a flood of homelessRabbits , 6 cages is never enough 10 water bottlesis never enough , what ever you have nowisnt going to be enough , I know Yourthinking oh pooh , I amprepeared , But hon your neverprepared , no matter the amountof money , amount ofcages , water bottles and vetting, Please understand I am nottrying to discourage youas a matter of fact I am tryingto encourage you to do this ,but you have to be VERY prepared, I'm notsure if you have seen any of my threadsso a short reacp and i willpost the links at the end .

I do Rabibit and Reptilerescue , I have been doing this for manymany years , and every once in a while iget tossed a curve,5 weeks agowas a bad curve , We had shutdown a bunny mill ,and there was manyfemale rabbits Mostare as healthy assuch a place affords Butthere was one femalewho birthed 9 kits , She is asmallish rabbit , One of herbabies i assume the last oneborn , was what is called a peanut, very devistating most alwaysfatal , The little guy survived for afull 8 days before themother dispatched him .

Be prepared even for as long as i havebeen doing this I was NOTprepared for 3 Doe's to all kindle onthe same day within minutes of each other, At one point thru all this I had 42newborn and week old Kits , all at one time, Although i have had good luckfinding homes for most of the earlierborn Kits , I still have 20Babies in need of a home in 3weeks , ( I know math says22 but 2 are spoken for) Plus i just added 2 more thatsomeone couldnt have any more, And Also at some point thisweek i have 2 geriatric rabbitscoming in with special needs becauseof age , not to mention i justHAD ! to getthe new littleguy from the pet store yesterday. so all toll right now i have 18 adults, 22 babies , 2 coming In thisweekend , and 3 guinia pigs .

Another thing you have to take intoconcideration is Adoptions fees , vetting, little necessities this alladds up and you cant fold itinto Adoption fees, the cost wouldfar out weigh whatsomeone can or is willing topay for a rabbit ,One rabbitover a one month period cancost you $ 200.00 and sorry but that is aminimal cost .

Also when runningrescue , there is a necessity fora clean room , somewhere whereyou can quarenteen any andall new rabbits, Youcnt just bring in a Rabbit and add itto the herd , it should be quarenteened for aminimal of one week , best is two weeks ,Also bear in mind most rabbits you willbe getting in are eitherseverly abused or severly neglected, Special needs are going to come intoplay , (IE: health , disease , malformed , etc ). I think better thanwrite a longer thread asto what is involved maybeyou can PM me and i will giveyou my Instant messenger nameand we can talk thru IM's. But we can slokeep people updated thru the forum ,cause I know they are going tobe as involved as you andI are. heres the linkto some of my threads .
