I have had a number of responses from people on various forums telling me that 5 is not that old for a doe and a spay is quite safe at her age. They have been trying to convince me to spay Uno when she comes, so I want opinions from everyone.

What are the risks of getting a spay done on an older rabbit? Is it worth it? Is there a high chance she will make it through granted she is in good condition in the first place?

I am looking into all options, but I was of opinion before that she should not be spayed at 5 years old unless there was reason to do it. Is it still a good idea to get it done at her age?

Is there any extra tests that should be run to make sure she is in prime condition for a spay?

I don't have the answers that some who will come along will, however, I do know that it's best to have a doe spayed by the age of 3. The risk is quite high that she could already have cancer I suppose. Don't take this to heart, however, especially if she's as healthy as you say.

As far as acutally having her spayed, they should do a pre-exam to make sure she really is healthy enough to go through the prodedure.

That's all I have, I hope it helps. More will be along to give you the best advice soon. :D

Here, I just found this for you, it talks about why to spay early and other things...

I'm assuming she's healthy, but I have not seen her. There is no sign of any problems with her but that does not mean there is not some hidden problem.

And I know 6 months to a year is the ideal range but she's an ex-brood doe and she's 5, so that's why I'm posting here to find out if I should still chance the surgery even without any good medical reason - if she had cancer already, yes I would risk it but if she doesn't, is it worth putting her through the spay?

I did plan on the pre-surgery check up. I had actually planned on an overall health check even without thinking of getting her spayed. But is there any extra tests that should be run on an older doe that isn't normally run on a young one?

We had our sweet Pumpkin spayed when she was 5...just before we adopted her. She came through the surgery well, and has been very healthy. We had her to the vet several weeks ago, and they were amazed at how active she is....she's about 7 now.
