Something's wrong with my bunny (hasn't pooped/eaten hay all day). Vet trip needed?

Last night I spent the night at my grandmother's house, leaving my mom in charge of my two bunnies for the night. She gave them hay at around 9 last night and pellets at 10 this morning. When I got home at 11 this morning, Bugs had only one single pile of poos in his litter box over the 13 hours since his hay was topped last. I gave him more hay right when I got home. It's now 5 hours later and he hasn't pooped once. I did see him pee once though. I'm suspecting a blockage because he did get to the bags of lettuce I had up in my windowsill and ate the bags trying to get to the lettuce and he's molting again. He isn't acting like how he did when he had stasis (pressed belly to the floor, refused everything). He did eat his pellets and ate a carrot sliver and cilantro I offered him a few hours ago. I have critical care, should I give him some of that? If he needs to go the vet I need to know asap. My vet is always on-call, should I call her? I have work all day tomorrow so I can't bring him in then. I gave him simethicone a few hours and I'm going to give him more in a bit. I gave him a belly massage and he really liked that when he usually doesn't enjoy his belly being touched.

You could give him a papaya enzyme. It is supposed to clear the blockage of fur. Below is a link to the ones I give my rabbit. If it were my rabbit I would call my vet to schedule an appointment.

After I posted this, I went in to check on him. He was in his litterbox munching on hay! He left a small pile of poos (they were smaller than normal) but at least he's still pooping. I noticed that he hasn't drank anything so I force fed him water. I put a mixture of water and apple juice in his bowl and I measured it out so I'll know how much he drinks from now until I go to bed. Does pineapple also work for fur blockages?

I'm glad he is doing a little better! Normally when something happens to my rabbit I freak out and decide I'm going to call the vet. My mom is always saying "Lets see how he is in the morning." When morning comes he is almost always better!

Glad he’s had a poo and is eating, I was going to ask about the water but you already answered my question. If he doesn’t drink water definitely keep forcing it, I smear fruit juice on the end of the syringe and my bun will drink it until he realizes. I am praying he is better in the morning

He's doing a lot better. He's not usually the biggest drinker but he did drink a lot of his special water last night. I don't want him to get hooked on the apple juice water so I gave him regular water last night. I made sure his veggies were soaked. I groomed him last night and when I woke up. My mom also thought I should just wait it out because she didn't want me to take him all the way to the vet and spend all my money if he could get better by himself at home. Thank you!

I had the same thing happen with my bun. I asked my vet for extra medication to keep at home just Incase this happens. My bun was just constipated and dehydrated too. Hopefully you bun will not need a vet visit but the next time you’re st the vet I would ask her about metacam and Metoclopramide to keep at home.

Why did your mom need to “give” the rabbits hay??? They should have a huge amount of hay available at ALL TIMES! Very important!

Sorry, I meant to give fresh hay or to top their hay. I am aware of how important it is for them to have hay and they always have hay avaliable. I should have worded that better.

On another note, I bought some pineapple bits today and after reading the ingredients I'm hesitant to feed it. I'll attach a picture of the ingredients. Does it look safe to feed? They'll only get a small portion a day.

Please throw that pineapple in the trash! That is not healthy for rabbits. I STRONGLY suggest purchasing dried Pineapple that has NO other ingredients. You can easily find affordable options on Etsy. TheWellKeptRabbit is a shop I personally love and trust 100%. Added sugar in the Pineapple will do more HARM than good! Please take my advice. Any fruit given should have ONE ingredient only! (The fruit).. Obviously if something seems off it is ALWAYS best to go to the vet first, ask questions later!!! I hope you dont get offended and see that Im only trying to help you and your bun!

I had tried the pineapple myself yesterday and it tasted way too sweet for him so I ate it myself. My mom bought a fresh pineapple coincidentally today so I'll just cut that. I'll also get some dried pineapple. I remembered after posting that it should only have one ingredient. I can't drive so I can't take them to the vet unless something's very wrong. It's my mom's choice on whether or not he goes to the vet unfortunately. After redoing the bunny pens last month I didn't have much money left and the money I do have has to last me until Wednesday (pay day). I usually keep a vet fund but recently I didn't have enough money for hay so I had to dip into that. I know how risky the wait and see approach is but that was my only option.

Ugh that is very unfortunate that you do not have control of whether they receive proper care or not. It must be frustrating for you to be in that situation. Maybe you can try to educate your parents on how fragile bunnies are and how their health can go downhill VERY quickly.. especially something like not eating! You can show them the House Rabbit Society website.. Go to the rabbit care pages and politely ask them to read it. Try to build back up that vet fund! You must NEVER run out of hay! That has to come first. I would hold off on any treats, even pure fruit. Encourage as much hay consumption as you can. That is the #1 best thing for their tummies. Bunnies are picky, so make sure they have LOTS of hay available, always. They will pick out the "best pieces" and leave the rest. It is normal to have a lot of hay waste, but you should always give them a fresh supply at least once daily, even if they still have a lot left. They will only eat "certain pieces". Make sure you scrub out their water dishes with hot soapy water, rinse really well, and give them nice fresh water every single day. Hay and water are always the most important things to their health. It is good that you understand the importance of continuous eating and pooping. Do you have baby gas drops at home in case of emergencies? You can buy these at the grocery store for fairly cheap. Look for "infant Simethicone". Do you have an emergency kit at home for them?

It’s good your bun is eating hay and drinking. Continue to encourage your bunny to eat hay. I would start the critical care. Give them the fresh pineapple and or papaya (but not too much at once). I would cut out treats and pellets until they get back to their usual self. Continue to give your bunny belly massages and the symethicone. Monitor your bunny closely. Keep them hydrated, encourage them to drink. This should be helpful for their blockage. It will take a few days for them to recover. If they seem to be worse or absolutely no improvement then call your Vet and see what they recommend.

I do have an emergency kit. I have critical care, carrot baby food, simethicone, pedialyte, flour (on hand during nail trimmings), hydrogen peroxide, and antibiotic ointment, along with every paper my vet has given me in case I need those someday. I also keep syringes and multiple brushes I have.

They get fresh hay 2-3 times a day and fresh water every other day unless they need it refilled before then.

Any advice please rabbit has snuffles and not eating much i syringe meds with a drop of Ribena In and he eats a little after , but then he won’t eat for hours after that what can I do ?? I work full time so can’t syringe feed every few hours I can only do it morning and evening

I have taken him vets they checked his teeth nothing major found they said to continue syringe feeding him but he’s lost weight . What else can I feed to make him put weight on? Being being very selective . Ask how much should he be having when syringing ? Or is any amount better than nothing
