Something wrong with my rabbit. Pls help ! Urgent need !

Hi ! My 8 months old rabbit is having strange behaviors. He's eating much less and pooping less also. I tried to fed him so many varieties of food but the only thing he ate was a small piece of cabbage and a bit of hay. Yesterday his poops were so small compared to my other female rabbit and today he pooped only a bit. He also doesn't want to be pet. Normally he lets me pet him and then he can sleep peacefully but when i pet him today he pushed my hand and bited me. He seems down with no energy. I'm bringing him to the vet today to check what is wrong. But i have to wait till my father comes back home. In the time being what should i do ? I'm really worried.

You should feed him critical care and water( food pellets mushed by water also works) and give him belly rubs. Check if his teeth are not overgrowing, eyes not bulging. Let him rest.

Thank you for your response. His teeth are alright. I tried to give him belly rubs today but he turns away , yesterday i gave him belly rubs and he was appreciating it but not today. I gave him water unfortunately he's not drinking it just smelling it. Now he's just lying under the table. I think it has something to do with his belly because he's always lying on it. He can get moody all of a sudden and scratch or bite on something near him.

You need to get your rabbit to a vet ASAP WITHOUT DELAY! This sounds exactly like GI Stasis which can kill them within a day. Please see a vet that specialises in rabbits who can do their best to get your bunny’s gut moving again, relieve pain and get him eating. More details here but please go to the vet with urgency!

The vet needs to check his teeth. Only the vet can get a good look inside the mouth at the molars in the back to see if sharp points have developed on them and are causing pain so he doesn't want to chew and eat. If there are sharp points then the vet will need to trim or file down those sharp points after sedating your rabbit first. If the vet finds that his teeth look fine, then you may need to have xrays done to see what might be going on internally causing the lack of appetite. Blood tests might also need to be done.

For medication, the vet should send home pain medication like meloxicam, probably also a gut motility stimulant like metoclopramide, and a syringe feeding food mix. The vet should also administer some sub q fluids as your rabbit is also likely dehydrated. There might be other medication needed, but those will be the basic ones usually prescribed.

Hi everyone ! Thank you all for your responses. I went to the vet yesterday and it turns out that he had an indigestion. The vet told me that since rabbits are rodents they pretty much chew on everything and sometimes even eat it. I think it's probably all the cardboard that he ate that gave him this indigestion. The vet made 2 injection with him. One of them was to make him regain his appetite and he gave me some protexin soluble. Today he is eating and seems to have regain his appetite. He seems a bit tired but he should be fine after some days with the medication. Thankfully it was not something very serious , i was so scared he was having gastric stasis. Thank you all again ❤

Yep, rabbits are not rodents, they are from the Lagomorpha family and are treated differently to rodents. They are actually more similar to horses! I would find a new vet, you need one called an “exotics vet”.
Is your bunny pooping now? As well as eating.

Please also know that cabbage is a gassy food to buns and should be fed in moderation. It sounded like GI stasis to me too and I’m not fond of the vet’s plan of action. I also agree that an exotic vet may not be an easy option.
I only have one exotic vet here so we have put together the bunny medical kit for me to have at home. I have pain meds, gut mobility meds, critical care, gas drops, thermometer, super glue (for any skin tears), Vetericyn spray (most amazing stuff ever), sterile gauze (pads and wrap), eye drops, upper respiratory medication, and actual IV fluid bags with tubing and needles if needed. Then I have my grooming tools, combs, nail clippers, small flashlight (bunny nails are so much easier to cut when you hold the light underneath and can see the quick), etc.
Having said this, my buns are normally 100% healthy and happy. It took one terrifying time of a gut problem to make me put my home medical kit together. Buns go downhill so fast.

Hi ! I'm sorry but i live on a small island called mauritius and all the vets don't do for rabbits. This vet was the only vet that consulted rabbits too. I brought my rabbits many times to him and my rabbits always recover. It's sad that there aren't vet for rabbits where i live .
My rabbit is doing pretty good now. He's eating and pooping like normal and he seems more active, he' slowly recovering. I always tell my mom to not give them a lot of cabbage but she just gives them a lot. My 2 rabbits got babies and they are like 3 and a half weeks old. The babies tried to eat cabbage from the parent's bowl but i prevented them and seperated it. But my mom is so persistant she gives them cabbage and say that they are old enough, i'm very angry because it's dangerous and they can get diarrhea which is common to get at 3 or 4 weeks old because of their sensible guts. I told her firmly to stop giving cabbage and i hope that when i will go to school next week she'll not give behind my back

Maybe show her some articles about the cons of feeding too much cabbage. She may be doing it only because she cares alot, but she doesn't know.

Thank you all for your responses. I remember calling so much vets asking if they consult rabbits but none of them. I was asked to call another vet and the other vet would told me to call another one and it continued like this until i finally found this vet that's why i can't think of any other vets

I told her a lot of times but she wouldn't listen. I didn't show her an article yet , thanks for the tip. It's true that she cares a lot about them and i think that she understood now that giving cabbage is dangerous for them as she didn't gave today. But i just hope it won't happen when i'll be to school next week
