So I just came across this ad online stating that these people have rabbits for sale. They have like 60 mixed breed rabbits, bucks, does, and babies that they need to get rid of asap because they are moving or something like that. If they dont sell them they are all going to auction on the 23rd. Anyway, it so happens that these people have one of my EL bucks. I replied to the ad stating I was interested in their EL buck they had. I really want to buy him back as I do not want him going to auction. Am I just over reacting? They dont know its me that replied to the ad yet. Should I just tell them who I am and that I am willing to take him back? This is really bothering me...

I would think it would be alright to let them know, politely of course, who you are and that you would like to have the rabbit back, simply for the rabbit's best interests.

When we sell our rabbits, we REQUIRE that our buyers return the rabbits if in any case they feel that they can no longer take care of them. The last thing we want is for our bunnies to end up in unknown homes with unknown circumstances, or in some shelter, or worse, dumped off in some random field to fend for themselves.

It may also be best to refer these people to a rabbit rescue near by, instead of taking the rabbits to an auction.

:yeahthat:

I think it's an important part of a responsible rabbitry to have the return policy that Inle_Rabbitry has. I am a firm believer in purpose-breeding animals: if you plan a litter to be show rabbits, they should always be treated like show rabbits, or pet rabbits. Clearly, you bred for this litter to be show rabbits or pets, and they don't belong in a small animal auction. It's something I have to think about a lot because I work with animals in labs. The animals were bred to be in labs, that's where they belong. Some rabbits are bred to go to the auction, and that's fine, but the bunny you sold them certainly wasn't bred for that. I too would forward them to a shelter or rescue website if possible.

Well, I talked to her last night and I am set to pick him up later today. Lets hope she keeps her end and really does meet me. Keep your fingers crossed everyone.

the best of luck gettin your bun back. this is really upsetting, i wish people would consider the animals first and foremost but sadly some i feel do not!. this is why i have so many animals who i may add get treat as they are they only ones i have,:Xi regulary take in rescue animals. i cant stand the thought of them going somewhere they wont be looked after properly or mistreated cos there not wanted anymore.i wish i could get 5 mins with these sort of people i really do.:censored2:

Well Im back. I have him. Hes fine as far as I can see other than needing some groceries. What disturbed me the most is what else she had with her. In the back of her car...mind you it is 80 degrees right now here, she had about 20 baby rabbits crammed in a box with a few holes poked through. She open the box to show me and these babies were so crammed together with no air circulation they were all panting like dogs and their noses were soaked in sweat. I was discusted. She said that she was taking them to a pet store to be sold. Some of these babies looked half dead already. I wish I could have taken them all but Im really glad that I got him out of there. Discusting. =(

AWWWWWWW those poor babies. But I'm happy for you:)and your boy

What a sad situation. At least you got your EL out of there.

So Ive had him for a few hrs now and can I just tell you he is soo sweet but he is sooo skinny. All bones. What can I give him to beef him up quick? I am giving him pellets with some black oil sunflower seeds and some quaker oats. Any thing else?

Don't overfeed him!!! He needs to put the weight back on SLOWLY. Otherwise you could do more damage. Give him time. I am glad to hear that you have him back :)

OMG guys. Maybe I didnt do the right thing by taking him back because now I might have put my whole herd in jeopardy. I was out (he is secluded from the rest thank God) watching and talking to him and he was sitting in his little kennel cleaning himself...and he sneezed and a tiny bit of white crap came out. It was only once but now Im super paranoid as you can imagine. What do I do now? Did I do the worng thing by taking him back. Ugh. Now Im sick to my stomach.

When you get rabbits from similar situations, it is ALWAYS best to isolate them from the rest of the herd for at least 2 weeks to monitor them. Ideally, this should be done with any new rabbits, but I'll admit that I let it slide when the rabbits are from someone I know or trust. But from a bad situation, and especially with the babies looking sick, it's best to separate him for awhile.

I will have to be very strick about hand washing and such before I go to the rest of the herd...they are downstairs. Poor guy.

I have a doe that will sneeze sometimes when I put hay in her cage or when she spends a day outside running in the grass. Sometimes when she inhales her food or water she will sneeze. She is just sensitive. I always freak out because sneezing in rabbits scares me but she has done this off and on for quite awhile and she is healthy. Maybe all that hay in his cage is causing a little sneezing. Just keep washing your hands and clothes and handle him last like you are doing.

I was keeping my fingers crossed that its just the hay. Ive only seen him do it once and he is clean and active with no other problems other than being skinny...so Im hoping and praying. He will be under strick quarantine for about a month just in case. Hes such a sweetie I hope everything works out for him. Thanks everyone for the input too!

Well...checking him out again I noticed that the insides of his front feet are crappy. =( Now what? Ive never experienced this before. Im so pissed right now. Hes only sneezed the one time so I guess Im just going to keep a watchful eye. He also had mats on his face under his chin that I managed to get out....geez, what kinda place was he living in. Im scared for the rest of my crew.

Ok, he is definitely sick. Its progressing fast because he was fine yesterday. Now hes all stuffed up. What Im wondering is what do I do now? He is away from my other guys but Im still going to have to go down to feed them and such. Im so freaking worried. How do I go about this?

If he is sick and has an URI get him to a vet and on some antibiotics asap. If you get him treated quickly they can make a full recovery. Just make sure you feed and water him last and use a scooper/pitcher only
for him. Also after handling him the virus can be transferred on clothes so make sure you are aware of that. I have treated 2 rabbits with URI's and they are fine after a year they have never had a problem.

Good luck I know how stressful it is because you don't want to infect anymore of your herd. I do know many breeders don't treat and just remove the rabbit.....
