Hi i have been reading about all the info on the site about snuffles, Dennis my german nethie was a sneezy rabbit when we first got him (aged about 18 months) We took him to the vets straight away as the breeder didn't think it was a problem but the vet said it was because he was a netherland and they have such flat faces. It has got a bit worse with time but now he is getting the nasal discharge and sometimes an eye discharge. He is under a vet but they are not as advanced in scotland as over in America. So far he has had a course of antibiotics for a week and 3 weeks ago they gave him asteroid injection.I now know that is not the best way to go.

I have read everything on here about snuffles but thought i would post as well to see if any of you can help, Dennis is a really happy bun but it does seem to depress him at times please help.

Also can anyone tell me if pasturella can be passed through the air he is in a room by himself now but he was in the shed with the others?though we have had him for a year and the rest seem ok now if a bunny sneezez i'm totally paranoid thanks x

Are you sure it's Pasturella? They should run test to make sure. I have two boys that have had those syptoms. One was Pasturella, the other wasn't.

My boys were maintianing for the longest time. They still sneezed. still had discharge but they were still active, and eating. As long as they showed me they wanted to live I would keepfighting.

They both started a new med (Zithromax-expensive). The one with pasturella is no longer sneezing, no discharge. This after a year of meds. The other has been off meds for three weeks now and still looking great.

My vet said the others should be fine just no contact, make sure they have there own things. Wash hands before and after handling them and soon.

I'd be suspicious of teeth problems, especially since you said he has weepy eyes too. Such long term symptoms and no response to antibiotics means it may not simply be Snuffles. The roots of the teeth can grow into the sinuses, or there could be an abcess.

An x-ray can let you know for sure.

He was back at the vets on tues and he has lost 0.2 kg in 3 weeks he is eating his broccoli and some food but you can feel how much weight he has lost. He is back on Baytril for a fortnight the vet said if we didn't see any signs of improvement by then it didn't look good. I have got him on biolapis probiotic as well.He is very active when out but still sneezing bad.

Do they have to anaesthatise them to take an xray as the vet thinks he is a very high risk?

Thank you for replying

Don't know if he need it to go under. The vet is right with his health putting him under would be a risk. Again key is have test run to find out what is causing it.

Hiya just thought i'd post to let you all know how Dennis is. He has been on Baytril (or our equivalant) for a week and he has been getting the probiotic. He has started eating better again in the last couple of days and we are keeping him upstairs by himself:(Don't know if its partly being inside as he always seems a wee bit better but his sneezing is not as bad and his eyes stopped running

The vet has given him another 10 days worth before we take him back fora check up but i am gonna keep a positive attitude. i have to say he has spent quite a lot of time with saffy and she is fine, one of my other buns Nibbler has been a bit sneezy but he has had a really sore eye and its just healing now(been going on for ages) so i think he was the bunny equivalent of run down. but he is so much better Yeah!!!

That is so good to hear. It isn't easy seeing your bunnies feeling bad.

Alicia, Ringo,Samantha, Connor, Teresa, Dallas, and Elvis

How is the bunny?

:yeahthatMy boy Max has a chronic runny nose/respiratory problem. Is your boy eating his pellets and hay? With the eye discharge, I would be a bit concerned that it could be a tooth problem. They were able to get some good xrays of my Max without putting him under, but you can usually get the best if they anesthetize him.

How old is he and how long has this been going on?

PS. I would stay away from the broccolli, it can give them gas :)

Hi sorry i haven't been back in touch i have had loads on at work Dennis's eye has cleared up, he is still sneezing but not nearly as bad sometimes it can be hours before you hear him. he has also managed to put back on 0.2 kg and is eating so much better. Its funny cause he had been out with Saffy and she has not caught the snuffles from him. oh he is not as mucusy either.

Poor wee nibbler though has a horrible eye it has had a scab since we got him but it was only small so we kept cleaning it but it has got worse all round eye and his nose is scabby too, the vet did a biopsy on monday but they are thinking it could be syphilis he goes back tomorrow for a check but i don't know when i'll get results. he has also been snuffly, he is such a cute wee man i hope he gets throught his.

I didn't know that about broccoli, Dennis goes absolutely daft for his broccoli and does laps around his hutch until you give him it.
They are both eating pellets nibbler loves his hay Dennis has never been as bothered and i wonder if it irritates him more so i tend to give him supergrass from burgess or their meadow hay

Thats good to hear that he is feeling better.
