Should I keep letting my bunny suffer? (RIP)

Hello!


I have a 5 month old rabbit. She recently hasn't been eating since a week ago. Just pieces every few hours (same with water) and I had recently taken her to get a shot and medicine for walking dandruff. Since after the shot she has been getting seizures like 3-6 times a day. She keeps having spazzing here and there all the time kinda like if she is jumping from one of those nightmares that you have when you fall into the black hole or something. She also chomps at the air as if she were chewing gum. She always weeps once in a while. I also noticed today that she makes theses notices when she chomps at the air today like a yawn. It's really hard for describe. The vet said that there is really nothing they can do besides to stop the shot and see if that helps. It has been a day since we have stopped the shot and she is still having them. she had 4 seizures already and she hasn't eaten or drank anything. The vet said that the itching can make a rabbit not want to eat or drink anything but I don't know. I'm just so lost. I have a big heart for animals and I'm really trying everything. I'm so confused and really just need guidance and advice. Sould I let her suffer and live out her days until she comes to her end or should I end her suffering? This is a really a hard decision to make....I feel selfish.

I would definitly stop the shot and anything oral against mites if there is the faintest possibility that those are side effects.

Which colour is she? If I remember correctly some animals with white or partially white fur (was it the Vienna gene?) can be sensitive to one of the drugs used against mites.

Usually. afaik, treatment for mites is something like Stronghold, a few drops applyed to the fur in their neck - do you know which mites this are, and how bad is it (pictures?). It would need to be quite bad that the itching would keep a rabbit from eating.
Does she get pain relief meds? (Metacam). That's the first thing I give to avoid problems due to pain.

There can be other reasons for seizures, but I don't mknow much about that topic.

Yes, get that medication stopped immediately!

If your rabbit isn't eating and drinking well on her own, she'll need to receive supportive care and feedings. A mush can be made from food pellets, by soaking them in warm water first. Then using a spoon to feed, or a wide tip syringe (no needle). Otherwise she'll most likely starve to death without that help being fed, food and water. It needs to be given slowly, allowing time for her to chew and swallow, or you run the risk of causing aspiration pneumonia. If your vet was a knowledgeable rabbit vet, the vet would normally give instructions on how to do this.

Some medicines and antiparasitics aren't safe for rabbits. This is why it's very important to only take a rabbit to a vet that is specifically trained in the care of rabbits, whenever possible. And if a vet isn't a specialized rabbit vet, to always check if a medication is considered rabbit safe before allowing it to be given to them.

But even some medicines that are considered rabbit safe, can still cause side effects for sensitive rabbits. And when this happens the medication should be stopped immediately and in most cases, never given again.

Do you know what the medication (injection) is that your rabbit was given? And how many times did your rabbit receive it?

If you're somewhere that has rabbit specialists, get to the rabbit specialist immediately today. This new rabbit vet may be able to give your rabbit a seizure medication to help calm the seizures, and maybe your rabbit will be ok.

But if there are no rabbit specialists you can get to, and the seizures aren't stopping, then yes, unfortunately the kindest thing may be to have your rabbit euthanized to relieve her suffering.

Stop the shot. A product called Revolution can treat walking dandruff. It is used on dogs to protect against fleas, ear mites, etc. But the thing you need to do now is get her to eat. Get some Critical Care or Emeraid for Herbivores and syringe feed her. She will need 3 Tbsp of dry product per 2lb of body weight mixed with water. Feed 20 ml every 4 hours. Mix the powder with enough warm water to make it the texture of soft serve ice cream. Then as she gets better, make it the texture of mashed potatoes. Critical care and Emeraid may not be available as they are on back order everywhere but you can grind up hay and pellets and mix with water. Feed hay freely as always. She could go into or already be in GI stasis where where her digestive system has stopped. In this case, she will be in pain so you need to see the vet for pain medications and maybe other medications to help motility. Ask your vet about the Revolution as well.

So sorry for your loss.. One question, the vet is expert to exotic animals? Did they do the right diagnosis?? If a vet isn’t specialist to bunnies that’s dangerous for them because he doesn’t know what to do with a sick bunny and this can lead to wrong diagnosis and medicines… Bunnies are completely different than cats and dogs and they need different treatment, medications etc
A friendly advice if you get another bunny in the future please consider to find a good vet who’s specialized to bunnies

Some people don't have that option, because there won't be any vets that are knowledgeable about rabbits, with the proper training, close enough that they can get to, or even in their country at all.
