Should I be worried about my bun?

My bun hasn't been eating, drinking or pooping as much as usual today. He's still active, stretching and laying around like a happy bunny. I overslept today and only cleaned his litterbox at 10am instead of the usual 6am so I'm not too sure what time he started being like this. There were uneaten unformed cecos around and I opened a new pack of hay which he didn't seem very keen on eating. He's a picky bun, so I opened another new bag of the same hay and it was the same thing - he would rummage and eat a bit before prancing away. Definitely not as enthusiastic as compared to when I usually bring out the hay bag. I realised this happened the last time too - he doesn't seem to like hay that's too fresh or green lol. I also gave him a straw mat which he loves and he's been digging and snacking on it, and was enthusiastic as usual for treats and pellets. How worried should I be about him and what should I do? I think I'm paranoid when it comes to him, but there's no harm in being prudent I guess. Thanks much in advance!

Just an update - I fed him 1cc of simethicone and some pedialyte, heard some rumbling from him and now he's running around the hay bag and back to his feisty self. Will monitor through the night. Thanks!

Glad he's doing better. But if he does continue to show troubling signs, be sure to consult a rabbit savvy vet.

Thank you! He didn't eat much hay last night and seem a bit lethargic this morning. Fed him some simethicone and gave him some pellets and cilantro to make sure he's at least eating something. The good thing is he's still passing out cecos this morning even though the shape isn't right. I think he needs a trip to the vet today

Just an update: he’s gone to the vet and it is indeed stasis. Glad I gave him mylicon and pedialyte last night and this morning. He’s getting an injection now and the doctor prescribed him catlax, benebac plus, pain management medication and critical care.

Any tips on how to feed the star anise flavoured CC? He doesn’t like it and I have to mix it with some organic pure applesauce to get him to eat it and I’m not too keen on that.

Good thing you got him to the vet on time. Not sure how to get him to take it. I've been lucky to not need to give my bunnies any at this time.

Yes! Glad that I did. But I’m not sure if he’s going to make it through the night. He’s quite limp now and his ears are cold. I just fed him buprenorphine and I’m not sure if that’s the reason why he’s behaving like he’s sedated. He even bit his favourite treat in his mouth and stopped chewing altogether. I’m also trying to syringe feed him water. I hope he gets through the night

If he's actually limp and floppy, and not just inactive not wanting to move, then you need to see if your vet has an emergency number, as this would be an emergency.

If he's just sedate and not wanting to move around, it could be the buprenorphine. I would be concerned that maybe too much was prescribed and it's causing too much lethargy. This is one reason I really don't like when narcotics are prescribed instead of meloxicam. The other being it just slows down the gut further. If your bun does make it to tomorrow, I would suggest requesting meloxicam for pain management, instead of the buprenorphine.

Thank you for the advice! Sorry I saw it right after you posted but didn’t manage to reply. I called the vet’s emergency number and the person on the other line was just like oh I’m not sure what’s happening, but it doesn’t sound good and you can call a 24h animal hospital… Bunny was quite limp but it might really have been the buprenorphine. He started moving around a bit 3-4 hours later and began to poop and pee. He’s a lot more energetic this morning, eating his hay and puts up a fight when I try to syringe feed him anything. And there’s the mucous covered string of poop so I think he’s definitely recovering.

So I was worried that my buns weren’t drinking enough water but then google said that they might be getting enough through their greens. So when I get worried I make sure that I don’t dry off their greens when I rinse them. I give them very wet lettuce and then it’s a sneaky way of getting them to drink since they LOVE Romain lettuce (especially the hearts)!

I was so worried I hope he’s pulling through how old is he? You get so attached to them. Mines around 11-12 but he sleeps a lot but that’s his age. Keep up updated

Ikr! I’ve only had him for 2 months but I’m fussing over him all the time. Starting to wonder if my cat is getting jealous.

Bunny’s all recovered! Took a few days and I became so paranoid I’ve been picking and weighing his poop daily and keeping a diary since

He also just got neutered on Monday and is now back to his active self after being kept in the pen and showing sad faces. The vet said he’s a tad boney and recommended that I up his pellet intake. I don’t really dare to, so I’m upping his veg/herbs intake and just gave him some parsley, half a mini red pepper and some peppermint tea for his liberation celebration. He even stuffed his entire face into the (already empty) container I keep his pellets in. Him being greedy is definitely better than him not eating as much!

I baked their little hay biscuits into egg carton cardboard cups. I basically just blended hay, little bit of fruit, dried parsley, whole wheat flour, and water. I baked them until they dried out. They love these on their own but when I put them in the cardboard they went crazy cus it was a toy too. I tried to just make it very shallow and rub it onto the sides as much as possible cus I don’t want them to get too much protein or sugar. Sometimes I just rip them in half too if I see their poops are getting too dark or wet.

Anyone has any idea how to get bunny to eat from hay rack/feeder? Mine has a litter box with hay and a hay feeder bag in it but he prefers digging in the bag of hay. If I move the bag of hay outside the room, he will roam the house to search for it. Not a particularly huge problem, just that it gets a tad messy at times lol
